Abstract

Physical exercise contributes to maintain our health, through its role in inflammatory immune response. Cytokines are proteins that mediate communication between immune cells, either as pro- or anti-inflammation agents. Nonetheless, the dominance of pro- over anti-inflammatory cytokines during a workout, is harmful to health. This systematic review aimed at determining the effect of physical activity in modulating pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines during immune response. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guideline, literature searching was conducted in 3 databases which were PUBMED/MEDLINE, DOAJ and GARUDA, using keywords, citation tracking and snowballing. Inclusion and exclusion criterias were used to screen, while the Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess the quality of the articles. Data extraction and analysis were conducted descriptively. There were 376 articles identified, of which 329 were sorted and 82 were retrieved. Thirty articles underwent quality assessment, resulting to 12 inclusion studies. In conclusion, physical exercise influences the modulation of cytokine, whereby IL-6 and TNF-α (pro-) which increase at the beginning of exercise, are balanced by the increase of IL-10 (anti-inflammatory), which appears later in exercise or during recovery. For this purpose, physical exercise is recommended as a combination of aerobic and resistance exercise performed regularly at moderate intensity.

Abstract

In this study, the genome of an endemic Sulawesi’s plant, Medinilla tapete-magicum was sequenced using Illumina NextSeq 500 and assembled the whole chloroplast genome. Results showed that the cpGenome is 155,602 bp in size with typical quadripartite structure of a large single copy (LSC) region (85,409 bp), a short single copy (SSC) region (16,629 bp), and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) regions (26,782 bp). The cpGenome is composed of 132 genes, which consists of 87 protein coding genes, 37 tRNAs, and 8 rRNAs. The sliding window analyses showed that psbB-psbH and ndhF-rpl32 can potentially be used as markers. Microsatellite motifs of mononucleotide A and T dominated in the cpGenome. The phylogenetic trees from the concatenated 76 shared protein coding gene sequences showed the Medinilla clade was monophyletic and M. tapete-magicum is a sister species in the SE Asian clade which contain M. magnifica and M. speciosa.

Abstract

Critical thinking is an essential ability for students in the 21st century, particularly in complex subjects like the endocrine system in biology, which requires a deeper conceptual understanding. This study aims to analyze the critical thinking ability profile of Grade XI high school students in Bantul Regency on the topic of the endocrine system, a subject often considered difficult due to its abstract nature. This research is a descriptive quantitative study using a purposive sampling technique, involving 260 Grade XI students from various high schools in Bantul Regency. The test used consists of 8 essay questions, designed based on Ennis’ critical thinking aspects. The results reveal that the overall critical thinking ability of these students is still very low. Specifically, the percentage results for each aspect are as follows: the elementary clarification aspect is 37.8% with a very low category, the basic support aspect is 47.4% with a low category, the inference aspect is 25.5% with a very low category, the advance clarification aspect is 54.2% with a low category, and the strategy and tactics aspect is 47.8% with a very low category. These results provide a broader understanding of the critical thinking ability of Grade XI high school students in Bantul Regency, which can serve as a basis for educators in developing and designing various learning innovations aimed at enhancing pupils' capacity for critical thought.

Abstract

The challenges faced in teaching cell material in high school show the need for innovation in learning media to facilitate understanding and increase students' learning motivation. This study aims to develop website-based interactive multimedia on cell material and evaluate the media's feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness in improving critical thinking skills (CTS) and learning independence of grade XI students of SMAN 1 Ngemplak. This type of research is research and development (R D) using the ADDIE model by Dick and Carey, including the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Field trials were conducted by a quasi-experimental method using a non-equivalent control-group pretest-posttest design. 62 students from two classes XI of SMA Negeri 1 Ngemplak became field trial subjects, divided into control classes (31 students) and experimental classes (31 students) by applying cluster random sampling techniques. Data on CTS and learning independence were measured using test and non-test techniques and then analyzed using t-tests. The results showed that: 1) website-based interactive multimedia is feasible to be used in the learning process, 2) website-based interactive multimedia is practical to use in the learning process, and 3) website-based interactive multimedia is effective in improving students' CTS and learning independence

Abstract

Students' critical thinking skills are essential in 21st-century education. Certain students show a lack of enthusiasm for learning and have limited critical thinking skills. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of interactive multimedia in a flipped classroom setting on understanding biodiversity, with a particular focus on increasing learning motivation and critical thinking skills. The research employed a quasi-experimental method known as the nonequivalent control group design. Collecting samples using the cluster random sampling technique. The collection instruments include interviews, student needs questionnaires, validation questionnaires from media and material experts, learning objectives and teaching module flow questionnaires, teacher and student response questionnaires, learning motivation questionnaires, and critical thinking tests. Data analysis comes in a variety of forms, including initial study data analysis, feasible information analysis, practical information analysis, and effective information analysis. Feasibility has a score of 90.3% (very feasible), and practicality has a score of 91.2% (very practical). As well as the effectiveness of learning motivation with a sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000 0.05 and an N-Gain of 0.764 (high), besides critical thinking with a sig. (2-tailed) of 0.047 0.05 and an N-Gain of 0.706 (high). The research results show that interactive multimedia that utilizes the flipped classroom method is feasible, practical, and successful in increasing learning motivation and critical thinking skills. However, this interactive multimedia has only been implemented at senior high school 4 Muara Teweh, so it needs to be expanded to other schools and developed with other concepts
