Abstract

The implementation of online English instruction in remote areas during the COVID-19 pandemic, which mandates school closures, remains unknown, especially given these areas’ reputation for inadequate educational facilities. Additionally, the preparations, implementation, and challenges experienced by English as a Foreign Language (henceforth, EFL) teachers in rural areas remain unclear. This study therefore aimed at exploring the experiences of EFL teachers in rural areas on (1) their readiness for conducting online teaching, (2) their implementation of online teaching, and (3) the challenges during the implementation of online teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The research was conducted in Indonesia with eight English teachers in rural schools. This study was a qualitative study that employed a phenomenological study approach and used semi-structured interviews to collect the data. The findings indicate that EFL teachers, during this pandemic time, were able to conduct fully online English teaching because they possessed sufficient knowledge of English instruction using technology. Additionally, these teachers might leverage various technologies and adapt those tools to transform their usual face-to-face English instruction into online instruction. Nonetheless, these teachers in rural schools frequently encountered challenges with internet connectivity, student-owned technology devices, student enthusiasm, and student netiquette when enrolling in online English teaching. Additionally, this article discusses some practical considerations for implementing online English teaching during a pandemic.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increase in the availability of research on informal digital learning of English (IDLE); however, the significant difference between IDLE activities undertaken by male and female students was currently unexplained. The purpose of this study was to see if there was a significant difference between EFL male and female students' use of Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE). This study used a quantitative approach with an ex-post-facto design to address the research goal. The questionnaire was distributed to 656 students (181 males and 475 females) from the English Language Education Department at an Indonesian public university. The questionnaire data was then analyzed using descriptive statistics and parametric statistics, specifically the independent sample t-test. As a result, the findings indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between male and female students' participation in IDLE activities. There were 6 significant items with p-values less than 0.05 (p<0.05) among the 24 items. As a result of the current study's findings, EFL male and female students perform differently in IDLE activities, in which, male students outnumbered females in 5 IDLE activities.

Abstract

Online learning became a learning adaptation during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the post-pandemic era, learning still implements online learning in blended learning. The satisfaction and expectation terms were used to measure the effectiveness of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for a practical blended learning experience. This study aims to investigate EFL junior high school students’ satisfaction with online learning and delve into the students’ expectations of blended learning in the post-pandemic era. An explanatory sequential mixed method design was conducted through an online survey of 151 eighth-grade students and interviews with ten students among the survey respondents comprising five in each high and low satisfaction category. The study collected the data through a purposive sampling technique analyzed using descriptive analysis for the quantitative data and thematic analysis for the qualitative data. The result explained that most students were satisfied with online learning: instructor pedagogical skills, interaction, technology, and learning resources factor. Furthermore, for blended learning, the students expect to keep blended learning and be able to use technology used in online learning, such as a smartphone. These results help the EFL teacher to raise students’ satisfaction with online and blended learning at the junior high school level.

Abstract

Previous studies have revealed that social media (SM) was implemented in EFL (hereafter, EFL) students’ online informal learning of English (OILE). However, the information about learning goals, pros, and cons of doing these activities remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to explore (1) the learning goals of online informal learning of English via SM and (2) the students' perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of using SM to facilitate OILE. This basic qualitative study recruited 14 EFL students at a university in Indonesia to join in semi-structured interviews. The interview results were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The findings revealed that EFL students engaged in OILE via SM for various goals (mostly for form-focused and meaning-focused goals), focusing on learning and practicing language skills. However, those learning goals primarily focused on form than meaning. In addition, the participants confessed that doing OILE brought advantages to cognitive and affective domains. Unfortunately, the participants also perceived that doing such OILE also brought some disadvantages. From the findings, we offered some implications to advance EFL learning through OILE via SM.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of the Busuu application on students' vocabulary mastery and their perception of its implementation in eleventh-grade classes at SMA Negeri 2 Gerokgak. The research aims to address the lack of vocabulary teaching in Indonesia and the challenges faced by teachers in incorporating technology into vocabulary instruction. Educational technology, including the Busuu application, offers opportunities for students to learn independently and access a wide range of learning materials that are designed for learning foreign languages, providing users with feedback from native speakers and downloadable lessons. Previous studies have highlighted the positive impact of Busuu on students' motivation and vocabulary learning. This study utilizes a mixed methods research design, combining quantitative data analysis and qualitative interviews. The research is conducted over seven meetings with eleventh-grade students to improve their vocabulary skills. The study examines the statistical significance of increased vocabulary acquisition among Busuu users and analyzes qualitative data to gain insights into students' perceptions of the app. The findings of this research contribute to the improvement of language learning practices in Indonesia and provide valuable insights for language learners and educators. The study's significance lies in informing teachers about various learning media and their impact on English language teaching Furthermore, the research helps schools improve existing learning media and keep up with educational developments. However, the results indicate that Busuu is a valuable platform for vocabulary learning, creating a positive learning atmosphere. In conclusion, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of the Busuu application in improving students' vocabulary mastery. It highlights the importance of incorporating technology into vocabulary instruction and provides insights for further research in this field.
