Abstract

The advancement of technology has supported the implementation of e-portfolios in students speaking performance, which can be described as a digital tool where students can collect and store their projects online for quick access as long as their devices have an internet connection. However little is known has qualitatively explored how e-portfolio influence students’ cognitive development in relation to their speaking performance. It is thereby leading to a lack of literature on this topic. This research, therefore, aims to examine how e-portfolios will influence cognitive development in students’ speaking performance using a qualitative method. A phenomenological qualitative study design consisting of note-taking and semi-structured interview methods was used to obtain data from 33 eleventh-grade students ranging between 17-18 years old. The interview data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis; meanwhile, the note-taking was analyzed using content analysis to support the thematic analysis. The result showed that the students had a cognitive development on their speaking performance in terms of pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency. Moreover, students showed the benefits of peer feedback in e-portfolio activities, which enhanced their awareness and led them to identify strengths and weaknesses as well as to recognize the area for improvement in their speaking performance.

Abstract

Recent research indicates that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) such as ChatGPT has great potentials to support English as a foreign language (EFL) preservice teachers (PSTs) to develop their technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) during their studies in teacher education programs (TEPs). How these PSTs view academic integrity while using GenAI and apply it for TPACK development are still unknown. Looking at the above gaps, this study aimed at exploring how EFL PSTs use GenAI to develop their TPACK and perceived academic integrity. This study recruited eight EFL PSTs in an Indonesian public education university using a basic qualitative methodology. This study employed semi-structured interviews and researchers’ notes to collect the data. The data in this work was analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The results revealed that participants used AI for language skill development and for content creation as well as task assistance. The results also showed that they knew the potential risks of GenAI on academic integrity, had their own strategies for maintaining academic integrity when using GenAI, and had good impressions of academic integrity in AI-assisted learning. This study drew several theoretical and practical implications to support the application of GenAI in TEPs.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effect of integrating subtitled videos with the flipped classroom method on students' reading comprehension. This is because many Indonesian students still face challenges due to limited vocabulary, poor grammar mastery, and low motivation, even though reading comprehension plays a crucial role in English language acquisition. A quasi-experimental design was used in this study, involving two groups of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Seririt. The two groups were an experimental group treated with subtitled videos using the flipped classroom method and a control group receiving traditional printed text instruction. The findings of this study showed a statistically significant difference in post-test scores between the two groups, with the experimental group being higher than the control group. Thus, the implementation of subtitled videos allows students to access the content repeatedly and engage visually and textually. Meanwhile, the flipped classroom approach increases students' active participation and self-directed learning. These results indicate that combining subtitled videos with flipped classroom instruction effectively improves reading comprehension. Also, these results demonstrate the potential of student-centered, multimedia-enhanced strategies to enrich language learning and offer practical implications for future instructional design.

Abstract

Numerous studies have indicated that digital games offer a valuable learning experience for young language learners by fostering self-efficacy in English acquisition. Despite this, there remains a dearth of research investigating the impact of digital games on children's self-efficacy and reading achievements. The current study aims to fill this gap by examining (1) the impact of digital games on children's self-efficacy and (2) the effect of digital games on children's reading achievements. An exploratory sequential design was employed, integrating both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study involved 144 young learners in Indonesia who participated in eight treatment sessions using digital games as a learning tool. After these sessions, participants completed a post-test comprising 20 reading items to assess their reading achievements. Observations during the treatment sessions explored the implementation of digital games and their impact on self-efficacy, supplemented by interviews with 15 children to gain deeper insights into their experiences and perceptions. The findings revealed that digital games foster self-efficacy through four mechanisms: mastery experience, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, and emotional state. These mechanisms are integrated into the game's content, levels, feedback, and challenging activities. The implications suggest that carefully designed digital games can significantly enhance self-efficacy and reading achievements among young learners, offering educators a valuable tool for improving educational outcomes. Future research should explore the long-term effects of digital game-based learning and identify the most effective game features, while also addressing challenges such as equitable access to technology and balancing screen time with other activities.

Abstract

In the courtroom, all participants are expected to cooperate fully to clarify the case. This research aimed to investigate the types of politeness violations committed by the participants in the Ferdi Sambo case and the causes of these violations. The participants in this study included judges, the defendant, witnesses, advocates, and public prosecutors. This research employed a qualitative-descriptive approach. The techniques for analyzing the data included identification, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. During data identification, the violations were classified using Leech's (1983) politeness strategy theory. The findings revealed that the types of politeness violations included refusal, interruption, sarcasm, emotional outbursts, and non-verbal cues. Additionally, the causes of these violations were attributed to the participants' mood, emotions, and the pressure they experienced during the trial. This research provides significant benefits, particularly for English students, by enhancing their cultural awareness, professional communication skills, and conflict resolution abilities. Understanding politeness norms can help students become more aware of cultural differences in communication, which is essential for effective interaction in diverse contexts.Keywords: Ferdi Sambo Case; Politeness; Violation; Courtroom;

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, particularly generative tools like ChatGPT, has significantly reshaped how language learning is approached in higher education. However, while much has been said about the potential benefits of AI, there remains a lack of empirical research on students’ actual experiences. This study investigates the user experience (UX) of 110 English Language Education (ELE) students at Universitas in Bali using ChatGPT to support their English learning. The User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) was employed to measure six key dimensions: Attractiveness, Perspicuity, Efficiency, Dependability, Stimulation, and Novelty. The results indicate that students perceived ChatGPT positively across all dimensions, especially in terms of ease of use, emotional engagement, and learning efficiency. Validity and reliability tests confirmed the robustness of the instrument. The findings highlight ChatGPT’s potential not only as a functional educational tool but also as a motivational and user-friendly platform. However, the study also underscores the need for digital literacy and ethical guidance to ensure responsible use. This research contributes to a more nuanced understanding of AI in language education and provides insights for educators and policymakers aiming to integrate AI meaningfully into curriculum design.
