Abstract

The advent of ChatGPT has surprised many English educators, as theoretically, it has many potentials to support English language teaching. However, the empirical results of how ChatGPT influence English as a foreign language (henceforth, EFL) preservice teachers’ teaching plans remain unclear. This study therefore purposed to investigate the effect of ChatGPT towards EFL preservice teachers’ teaching plans. This study employed a mixed-method approach and recruited 17 EFL preservice teachers to join the research. The data was collected using a scoring rubric and an interview protocol. Using Mann-Whitney U Test and inductive thematic analysis, this study found that the lesson plans created by EFL preservice teachers in the experimental group failed to outperform those in the control group. Moreover, the pre lesson plans had no significant difference with the post ones. The qualitative data explains the statistical results. Then, two implications were drawn to effectively use ChatGPT to support teaching and learning.

Abstract

This study explores the role of E-portfolios in students’ cognitive development in speaking, focusing on fluency and pronunciation. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research investigates the experiences of eleventh-grade students at a senior high school in Buleleng, Bali, during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through researcher’s notes and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that E-portfolios significantly enhanced students’ fluency and pronunciation through repeated practice, self-assessment, and peer feedback. Compared to previous studies conducted at the university level, this research highlights that high school students require additional instructional support when using E-portfolios. The study concludes that while E-portfolios are an effective tool for improving speaking skills, integrating spontaneous speaking exercises and structured feedback mechanisms can further enhance students' oral proficiency.

Abstract

The potential of ChatGPT as a novel Artificial Intelligence (henceforth, AI)-powered language model for language instruction, particularly for preservice teachers (henceforth, PSTs), remains unclear since earlier studies mainly provided theoretical concepts that have not yet been empirically verified. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to unleash the potential of ChatGPT for English language teaching and professional development. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach. The participants in this study were eight preservice English as a foreign language (henceforth, EFL) teachers at an Indonesian public university who were completing teaching practicums. Combining online and offline meetings, this study used in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Inductive thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data, and the results show that the PSTs used ChatGPT for four main purposes (innovative teaching content creation and presentation, collaborative instructional strategies, development of effective assessments, and language proficiency improvement) to improve their teaching techniques during the teaching practicums. The results also suggest that ChatGPT could provide comprehensive and relevant information. Still, at some points, it also has some drawbacks regarding the quality and accuracy of the information. Although ChatGPT has several disadvantages, the participants had a positive view of ChatGPTs value to novice teachers professional growth. This study offers three implications for improving English language teaching and preservice teacher professional development.

Abstract

This research was conducted to explore in depth how teachers perceive the implementation of TMTBLT in Indonesian education, particularly in junior high schools, in the process of teaching English. This study employed descriptive qualitative methods where the researcher focused solely on observing the phenomena occurring in the field and presenting data non-numerically. The study took samples from teachers at SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja who teach English in the 7th grade. The sampling process used purposive sampling, where samples were selected directly in the field. The instrument used in this research was a questionnaire with a 4-point Likert scale ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The instrument developed by the researcher covered how teachers use TMTBLT, the difficulties teachers experience when applying TMTBLT, and the solutions prepared by teachers. After completing the data collection process, the researcher then conducted a descriptive statistical analysis of the results obtained. The research findings indicate that teachers have a positive perception, stating that TMTBLT can assist them in the process of teaching English. With TMTBLT, teachers also say that they can build interaction with students, encourage students to be more active, and be willing to learn independently to solve problems. However, they still encounter challenges in several areas, such as insufficient school facilities, for example, an unstable Wi-Fi network. Teachers still cannot ensure that all students participate actively due to the relatively large class sizes. Nevertheless, they strongly agree that TMTBLT should be further developed to support the teaching and learning process, especially in the field of language

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate whether the integration of digital stories and the POWER (Plan, Organize, Write, Edit, and Revision) strategy, supported by Canva, had a significant effect on students’ writing skill and social emotional development. The study was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Tejakula, focusing on second grade students during the 2024/2025 academic year. It employed an experimental study with posttest only control group design. The total population consisted of 264 students from 8 classess. A sample of 132 students from four classes was selected using the intact group sampling technique and divided into experimental and control groups. The obtained data of the study were collected using two types of instruments: the writing test and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic and inferential statistic analysis, i.e one-way manova. The results revealed that: 1) student taught using digital stories combined with the POWER strategy and supported by Canva demonstrated significantly better writing skills compared to those taught using conventional methods; 2) students' social-emotional development also improved significantly under the same treatment.  The development of this new method needs to involve various field, not only principals and teachers, but also students and other researcher who are interested to know the effect of it in writing skill and social emotional of students in other subject.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the perceptions and strategies of EFL preservice teachers in using ChatGPT while maintaining academic integrity. Using a case study approach, the research investigated the experiences of sixth-semester students at a higher education institution in Buleleng, Bali, during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results revealed one main theme and three subthemes: (1) ChatGPT as a brainstorming tool, not a final product; (2) Paraphrasing and cross-checking as ethical practices; and (3) Awareness of the risks of overreliance. The findings indicated that participants possessed ethical awareness in using ChatGPT strategically and responsibly. In addition, they demonstrated a tendency to avoid excessive reliance on technology and showed greater confidence in their own abilities. This study contributed to a deeper understanding of ethical AI use in higher education settings.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effect of integrating subtitled videos with the flipped classroom method on students' reading comprehension. This is because many Indonesian students still face challenges due to limited vocabulary, poor grammar mastery, and low motivation, even though reading comprehension plays a crucial role in English language acquisition. A quasi-experimental design was used in this study, involving two groups of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Seririt. The two groups were an experimental group treated with subtitled videos using the flipped classroom method and a control group receiving traditional printed text instruction. The findings of this study showed a statistically significant difference in post-test scores between the two groups, with the experimental group being higher than the control group. Thus, the implementation of subtitled videos allows students to access the content repeatedly and engage visually and textually. Meanwhile, the flipped classroom approach increases students' active participation and self-directed learning. These results indicate that combining subtitled videos with flipped classroom instruction effectively improves reading comprehension. Also, these results demonstrate the potential of student-centered, multimedia-enhanced strategies to enrich language learning and offer practical implications for future instructional design.
