Abstract

Skin diseases such as scabies continue to pose significant health issues within pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) due to inadequate sanitation and low awareness among students regarding personal higiene. Scabies is highly contagious, transmitted through direct contact and the sharing of personal items. Therefore, there is a need for interventions, specifically educational programs, to enhance knowledge and awareness about sanitation and the prevention of scabies in pesantren. This activity aims to improve students understanding of environmental sanitation, personal higiene, and the prevention and control of scabies through educational outreach activities. This initiative was conducted using outreach and practical training methods for students at Pondok Pesantren Al Amin, Lamongan. Evaluation involved pre-tests and post-tests, comparing the results to measure the increase in participants' knowledge. The results was a noticeable improvement in students' knowledge, with the average score increasing from 84.1% on the pre-test to 91.6% on the post-test concerning personal higiene and environmental sanitation at the pesantren (p-value = 0.000). This educational activity successfully enhanced students' understanding of sanitation and health in the pesantren setting. Further approaches are necessary for the prevention and transmission of scabies.

Abstract

Microplastics contamination has been detected in milk consumed by infants, with estimates suggesting an intake of 106-113 microplastic particles per day. These particles may pose potential health risks. However, the microplastic contamination in breast milk and formula milk in Indonesia remain unclear. This study aims to address this gap. This study employed a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. Microplastic detection was carried out on four groups: fresh breast milk, breast milk stored in plastic bags, powdered formula milk, and liquid formula milk. Breast milk samples were collected from breastfeeding mothers at Puskesmas Mulyorejo, while formula milk was obtained from various market in Surabaya. The processed samples were filtered using filter paper, and the retained particles were examined. The number and shape of microplastic particles were identified using a binocular microscope, while the polymer characteristics were analyzed using micro-FTIR. The average number of microplastic particles was highest in powdered formula milk (15.34±4.74), followed by liquid formula milk (11.59±9.50), stored breast milk (6.07±5.46), and fresh breast milk (1.41±1.50). Microplastic contamination was not detected in 17 out of 46 breast milk samples. Fragmented microplastic particle shapes dominated all samples. Nylon and Polymethyl Methacrylate were the most common plastic polymers in breast milk, while Polyoxymethylene, Polyvinyl Chloride, and Polymethylpentene were prevalent in formula milk. In conclusion, microplastic contamination in breast milk was minimal compared to formula milk, making breast milk the best feeding option for infants.

Abstract

Indonesia has the third highest prevalence of stunting in Southeast Asia. One of the main factors is poor environmental hygiene and sanitation, which causes infections and impaired nutrient absorption in children under five. Inadequate sanitation and poor water quality increase the risk of stunting. In Silir Village, Wates Sub-district, there were 18 cases of stunting in December 2023. To address this, a holistic approach is needed, including the implementation of the 5 Pillars of Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM). The community service was conducted in three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. Activities included water quality checks (all water samples contained E.coli), hygiene education, sanitation inspections, and assistance with water, waste, and liquid waste management. Education related to stunting and environmental conditions was conducted, along with a pre-test and post-test that showed an increase in the average score from 69.9 to 73.1. Further intervention is needed to improve the bacteriological quality of drinking water in the homes of stunted toddlers in Silir Village.

Abstract

Abstract

Malaysia is a prominent destination for Indonesian migrant workers in Southeast Asia. Despite their economic importance, migrant workers are susceptible to chronic diseases, particularly hypertension and diabetes, due to constrained access to healthcare, unhealthy behaviors, and demanding working environments. The objective of this community service initiative included the assessment of the health status of Indonesian migrant workers and the promotion of awareness through screening and educational activities. This community service program was conducted in May 2024 at Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur, in collaboration with the NGO Sharing Organization and the Indonesian Embassy. A total of 113 migrant workers participated in the event. Screening included blood pressure measurement, random blood sugar testing, eye, and reproductive health examinations. Doctoral medical students delivered a mini seminar on chronic disease prevention and management. The majority of participants were women (57%) and within the productive age group (25-55 years). Hypertension was highly prevalent (54%). The mean random blood sugar was 138 ±62.5 mg/dL). Domestic work was the most common occupation. The participants demonstrated a strong interest in health education, and feedback indicated that regular health programs would be welcomed. Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia show a high burden of hypertension and diabetes but limited disease awareness. Routine health screening, culturally appropriate education, and stronger collaboration between employers, health providers, and the Indonesian Embassy are essential to improve chronic disease prevention and sustain worker productivity.
