Abstract

Introduction: Hospitals are institutions that produce liquid waste that may pollute the environment and have a dangerous impact on health. Hospital waste has the potential to contain hazardous chemicals, pharmaceutical waste, radioactivity and microbiological pathogens in liquid waste that can pollute the environment and disrupt the balance of the ecosystem. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and the quality of the liquid waste at the Dr. Soetomo General Hospital. Methods: This research was a quantitative descriptive study using secondary data from laboratory analysis of wastewater inlet and outlet of The Central Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital for the January-December 2020 period. Effectiveness was obtained by calculating the difference between the inlet and outlet values of each parameter divided by the inlet value multiplied by 100%. Results and Discussion: WWTP in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya used a central WWTP which had 3 (three) units, namely WWTP Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR), WWTP Membrane Biostrain Reactor (MBR) and WWTP Aerobic Biofilter which aims to improve the quality of liquid waste. Based on the results of the research analysis, it has been found that hospital wastewater treatment using a central WWTP system is effective for reducing the levels of parameters, namely Total Suspended Solid (TSS) by 60.55%, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) by 72.52%, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) by 54.02%, Ammoniacal Nitrogen (NH3N) by 90.91%, Phospate (PO4) by 71.43%, bacteria group E. Coli by 99.93%. The temperature and Potential of Hydrogen (pH) parameters recorded at the outlet are in accordance with the established quality standards. Conclusion: The three WWTP units used in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital are able to treat liquid waste effectively. Liquid waste at each outlet parameter is in accordance with East Java Governor Regulation No. 72 of 2013 concerning quality standards for health facilities waste water, so that the effects of contamination on the environment can be minimized.

Abstract

Introduction: Jakarta has recorded heightened air pollution for years, and particulate matter (PM10) is one of the pollutants that could bring health burden in population. This study described the distribution of PM10 as well as analysed the correlation with meteorological parameters during 2020–2021 in Jakarta Province. Methods: Air quality standard index daily data from January 1st 2020 to March 31st 2021 was retrieved from the official data portal (https://data.jakarta.go.id/). The Spearman Rank correlation was employed to understand the correlation between PM10 Index with meteorological factors. Autoregressive Integrative Moving Average (ARIMA) model was constructed and Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) selected the model. Cross-correlation analysis explored the association between PM10 with meteorological parameters at multiple time lags. Results and Discussion: PM10 Index started to increase in April 2020 and reached its peak in August 2020. PM10 was positively correlated with temperature (p-value <0.05, R2: 0.134), but it was negatively correlated with humidity and wind speed (p-value <0.05, R2: -0.392 and -0.129). The high cross-correlation coefficients were found between PM10 and temperature at lag 0, humidity at lag 1 and wind speed at lag 1 (rho: 0.42, -0.38 and -0.24). The time series model ARIMA with parameter (p,d,q) (1,1,1) describes the fluctuation of PM10 index data with AIC 3552.75. Conclusion: PM10 concentration in Jakarta is significantly correlated with meteorological factors. The implementation of social restriction in Jakarta need to be supported by pollution control in the neighbouring areas in order to be able to reduce PM10 pollution level.

Abstract

Stunting in children under five is a global health problem that can be influenced by various factors, including inadequate home sanitation. Stunting in children can be chronic from environmental sanitation problems, infectious diseases, and lack of food consumption. The contribution of poor home environmental sanitation to the problem of stunting can be seen from the growth of disease-causing microorganisms that can cause infections in the body, so that children experience growth failure. Pakis Village, as the partner area of this program, is part of the working area of Puskesmas Pakis Surabaya. Stunting in Pakis Village is still a serious problem because it is one of the villages with a high incidence of stunting in Surabaya City in 2022. This community service activity contributes to further understanding of the description of home sanitation and the incidence of stunting in toddlers. Community service is carried out in the form of home environmental sanitation counseling in supporting the elimination of stunting in infants and toddlers. Participants in the Community Service counseling were 26 participants out of 30 pre-test average results of participants who knew about home environmental sanitation which was 67.63 then after counseling / education related to home environmental sanitation there was an increase of 20.38% or the average post test score was 81.41. Abstract

Stunting is a significant public health problem for toddlers in developing countries. The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia in 2018 was 30.8%. Referring to the target of the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) in 2019, the stunting rate of 28% has yet to be achieved. Determinants of stunting include direct and indirect factors. Direct factors are nutritional intake and infectious diseases. Indirect factors are food adequacy, parenting, sanitation, clean water, and essential health services. This study aims to summarize scientific evidence related to the relationship between sanitation and diarrhea factors and stunting in toddlers. This study uses meta-analysis, and article sources come from Google Scholar, Science Direct, and PubMed. Based on the inclusion requirements of the writing, namely informing about sanitation and diarrhea with stunting cases in toddlers, observational research designs, and publication years 2018–2022, 15 articles were obtained. Based on the meta-analysis results, sanitation (clean water) was the highest risk factor, with a pooled value of PR = 4.437 (95% CI 0.67–2.30). The lowest risk factor was latrines, with a pooled PR = 2.459 (95% CI -0.04–1.39). Analysis of diarrhea variables with pooled value PR = 1,404 (95% CI 0.12–0.56). It was concluded that the most significant risk was the clean water factor. Essential factors to control stunting risk are preparing the availability of clean water, advocating for local governments to take a leading role in providing clean water to areas in need, initiating behavior change, and increasing awareness about stunting risks as part of prevention programs.
