Abstract

Organic matter (OM) has a very crucial role in the management of acid mine drainage (AMD) using a passive treatment system, although information on the use of this system in different reclaimed-mining soils (RMS) is very limited. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of adding OM to RMS with different characteristics. It was carried out by adding only OM or in combination with coal fly ash (CFA) to two RMS with different characteristics (Palam and Cempaka Soils) and quartz sand (control) in a batch reactor experiment. This was followed by the incubation of the mixture of soil/quartz-OM or soil/quartz-OM-CFA at 60% water holding capacity for 15 days. After incubation, AMD slowly flowed into the reactor, and its pH in the reactor was monitored every day for 30 days, while the concentrations of Fe (iron), Al (aluminum), and Mn (manganese) were measured on the 30th day. The results showed that the application of OM on Palam Soil only increased AMD pH by 0.38 units, while Cempaka Soil and quartz sand increased by 4.83 and 5.36 units, respectively. The addition of OM to Cempaka Soil and quartz sand also showed a higher reduction in heavy metals concentration in AMD than those in Palam Soil. It was also discovered that the application of OM combined with CFA led to a higher improvement in AMD quality than only using OM. This study demonstrated that the effect of OM addition on increasing pH and decreasing metal concentration on AAT management with the passive treatment system is controlled by soil characteristics.

Abstract

The high attack armyworm pests (Spodoptera litura F.) caused the decrease of the vegetables productivity, especially the mustard plant in South Kalimantan. One of the ways in controlling pests is the usage of pesticide. Botanical pesticide could be an alternative to replacing chemical pesticide because of its environmentally friendly nature. Heart-leaved moonseed stem and lime leaf are the plant materials which could be botanical pesticide materials due to the content of alkaloids, flavonoids and limonoids compound that could reduce the spread of pests and increase the death of pests. The study aimed to find out the effect of heart-leaved moonseed stem extract, lime leaf extract and its mixture to the mortality and the death speed of larva Spodoptera litura F. The method used in the study is Complete Random Design with 4 treatment concentrations and 5 times repetition. The concentration treatments given are E0=0% concentration of heart-leaved moonseed stem and lime leaf extracts (control), E1=15% concentration of heart-leaved moonseed stem extract, E2=15% concentration of lime leaf extract, E3=15% concentration of heart-leaved moonseed stem and lime leaf extracts. The study result shows that the heart-leaved moonseed stem extract, lime leaf extract, and its mixture could give effect to the mortality of armyworm larvae with average percentage of mortality each of 46 %, 54 % and 48 %.respectively. On the observation of armyworm death speed shows that the giving of heart-leaved moonseed stem extract, lime leaf extract, and its mixture also gives effect with average percentage of death speed, 0,13., 0,17 and 0,14 worm/day.

Abstract

The attack of Spodoptera litura larvae resulted in up to 75% damage to leaves on plants. The main use of synthetic pesticides has a negative impact on the environment and health such as decreasing the level of human immunity. To reduce this impact, there is a need for alternative control solutions that are more environmentally friendly. Cigarette butts contain nicotine, phenol, and eugenol. So that cigarette butts have the potential to be used as an alternative insecticide. Based on this, it is deemed necessary to conduct research to determine the effectiveness of cigarette butts as an insecticide. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the concentration of insecticide on cigarette butts on mortality and speed of killing of Spodoptera litura larvae. The method used in this study was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with one factor, namely the concentration of cigarette butt insecticides with four treatments and repeated five times so that there were 20 experimental units. The treatments were P1 control, P2 at 10% concentration, P3 at 30% concentration, and P4 at 50% concentration. The results showed that the application of cigarette butt insecticides had a significant effect on the mortality rate and speed of killing of Spodoptera litura larvae. The P4 treatment gave the most effective results where within 24 hours after application it could kill >50% of the larvae tested and the rate of killing speed obtained was 1.7 birds per hour.

Abstract

Abstract

Nagara cowpea is a local crop from South Kalimantan that is grown on swampland.  However, nagara cowpea cultivation on swamp land can only be planted once a year, in the dry season.  It can be planted more than once a year if it is re-adapted to dry land by providing organic material in the form of water hyacinth mulch and identifying the diversity of soil macrofauna.  The purpose of this study was to determine the diversity of soil macrofauna in each treatment of water hyacinth mulch.  This study used descriptive exploration method. Soil macrofauna samples were taken by purposive sampling in cowpea raisebeds that were applied water hyacinth mulch. Furthermore, identification and calculation of the number of soil macrofauna were carried out in the laboratory. Data were analyzed quantitatively in tables to explain differences in diversity, evenness, and dominance.  The results showed that the diversity of soil macrofauna in the three treatments had a medium index value. Individual richness of soil macrofauna in the three treatments has a low index value.  Evenness of soil macrofauna has a value of more than 0.6 which indicates that the distribution of individuals per species is evenly distributed. This is in accordance with the dominance value of macrofauna, that there is no dominant species.
