Abstract

Tinea pedis is a type of superficial mycosis. Tinea pedis is a dermatophyse that is most often found in humans and is usually called water fleas. Lack of maintaining cleanliness and wearing closed shoes is one of the factors that causes Tinea pedis. Tinea pedis usually affects adults who work in wet or humid places, such as car and motorcycle washers, garbage collectors and farmers. When doing activities, the average farmer uses boots for too long. However, some farmers who do not wear boots while working experience itching on the soles of their feet. This research aims to determine the prevalence of fungal contamination that causes water fleas (Tinea pedis) in farmers in Tegalharjo village, Banyuwangi Regency. The population of this research are 30 farmers in Tegalharjo village, while the research sample Is skin scrapings between the toes of the farmers. Then the sample obtained is directly examined by using a microscope and 10% KOH reagent. The results shows that the farmers who are contaminated with the fungus that caused Tinea pedis are 6 people with a percentage (20%) and 24 people who are not contaminated with a percentage (80%). The incidence of infection Tinea Pedis among farmers in Tegalharjo Village, Banyuwangi Regency is also influenced by the duration of working in a day and the habit of wearing boots.

Abstract

Culex quenquefasciatus is a mosquito that acts as a vector of filariasis disease. In Indonesia filariasis is still one of the endemic diseases. This proves that the handling of vector Culex quenquefasciatus is still not done optimally. One way that can be done to control mosquito vectors one of them is to use larvacide. Larvacide which is widely used today is still synthetic. Although very efficient in causing mosquito mortality, larvacide synthesis harms the environment and can cause vectors resistance. Then another larvacide alternative is needed that is effective and does not cause negative effects. Plants can be a choice of larvacide from nature. The study aims to find out the potential of the water extract of bay leaves and papaya leaves in killing the larvae of the Cx. quenquefasciatus mosquito as well as the value of LC50 after 24-hour observation. The type of research used is experimental research. The concentration of the water extract of bay leaves and papaya leaves used is 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90% with trhee times replication. LC50 is calculated using the Finney formula (1971), the calculation is carried out using application SPSS statistical version 26. Based on the research conducted, the value of bay leaf water extract LC50 = 62.89 g/ml and papaya leaf water extract LC50 = 45.10 g/ml. So based on the LC50 value, ita can be concluded that papaya leaf water extract is more effective in causing mortality Cx. quenquefasciatus compared with bay leaf water extract.

Abstract

Abstract

Work that requires being in a humid area, can cause fungal infections. Skin fungal infections in humans can be divided into two, namely dermatophytosis and non-dermatophytosis. Dermatophytosis is a superficial fungal infection that attacks the keratinized parts of the skin, nails and hair and is caused by 3 genera, namely Microsporum, Epidermophyton, and Trichophyton. While non dermatophytosis is a fungal infection of the outer skin or this type of fungal infection does not reach the keratin tissue. Non-dermatophyte fungi include Aspergillus sp., Malessezia furfur. Due to dermatophyte and non-dermatophyte fungal infections, namely itching of the skin or earlobe. This activity aims to increase the understanding of cleaning workers at one of the universities in Surabaya about the dangers of fungus on the skin, so that they can prevent and anticipate early spread. The method used in this community service activity is the presentation and discussion of the dangers of skin fungal infections. To measure the level of understanding of the participants regarding the dangers of toxoplasmosis, a pretest was conducted at the beginning and at the end of the activity. Abstract

Sugar disease or diabetes is commonly known in medical terms with diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by an increase in blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) that occurs due to the body's lack of the hormone insulin both absolute and relative.  Glucose is a form of carbohydrate metabolism that functions as the main source of energy controlled by insulin. Excess glucose is converted into glycogen which will be stored in the liver and muscles for backup if needed. Increased blood glucose levels occur in patients with Impaired Glucose Tolerance (TGT), Impaired Fasting Blood Sugar (GDPT) and Diabetes Mellitus.  Service activities in the form of education related to the dangers of Diabetes Mellitus, the use of natural ingredients as an alternative to lowering sugar levels and checking Random Blood Sugar levels.  There is an increase in public knowledge because  the post-test value is higher when compared to the pre-test value.   The  average pre-test score is 38.3 points while  the average post-test  score is 79.2 points.   And  the results of the GDA examination stated 23 people whose results were above normal and 13 people whose results were still within the normal range.

Abstract

Domestic Cats (Felis domesticus) are favorite mammals that are mostly kept by humans. One of the obstacles in keeping cats is that they can be infected with ectoparasites and endoparasites. Many ectoparasite and endoparasite infections are zoonotic, so the cat's hygiene and health must be maintained by the owner. This study aims to determine the presence of ectoparasite and endoparasite infections in domestic cats in the Tambaksari area of Surabaya. The sample in this study were 32 cats that were kept in the Tambaksari area, Surabaya. This research was conducted on 32 domestic cats in the Tambaksari area of Surabaya. The examination was divided into 2, namely the examination of ectoparsites by means of which were carried out on the body surface, starting from the head, body, legs, and tail. While the examination of endoparasites by means of examination of feces by flotation method using saturated NaCl. The results of the examination were 21.87% positive for infection by ectoparasites, 78.12% were not infected with ectoparasites. The types of ectoparasites that infect are the Felicola subrostarus and the Ctenocephalides felis. While the results of endoparasite examination, as many as 9.37% were positively infected by endoparasites, 90.63% were not infected with endoparasites. Types of endoparasites found eggs of Toxocara spp. and Ancylostoma spp. So ectoparasites and endoparasites infections in domestic cats in the Tambaksari area of Surabaya are quite low. Cat owners should pay more attention to the cleanliness and health of their domestic cats Keyword: Ectoparasite, Endoparasite, Cat, Felicola subrostarus, Ctenocephalides felis, Toxocara spp., Ancylostoma spp.

Abstract

The accumulation of plastic waste is one of the main problems being faced by various countries in the world. The nature of plastic which is not easily degraded naturally will consequently be buried in the soil so that it will gradually change the soil components. Plastic belongs to a group of multifunctional complex polymers which have become conventional products in all sectors of life. The use of plastic on a large scale has an effect on increasing the amount of waste, such as the types of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) plastics. This study aims to obtain indigenous bacterial isolated from various soil samples in the landfill area and mangrove forests in Surabaya on the degree of degradation of HDPE and LDPE plastic polymers. Two places namely the final disposal site (TPA) and the Keputih bamboo forest in Surabaya. Sampling at landfill sites and mangrove forests. Then isolate the bacteria from soil samples and plastic waste obtained. Next, purification and screening of HDPE and LDPE polymer plastic degrading bacteria. The results of the isolation succeeded in obtaining 19 types of isolates that can grow on media containing plastic, with the majority having the characteristics of bacilli, Gram negative, catalase positive, capable/incapable of fermenting glucose and lactose and having cell sizes between 1-5 µm. Screening test results obtained that isolate 2 (K1D2U2 KPH) isolated from the Keputih Final Disposal Site (TPA) was identified as a Bacillus sp., with HDPE degradation ability of 27.13% and Isolate 17 (K2D3U1 MWJ) which was isolated from the Wonorejo mangrove forest was identified as a Pseudomonas sp. with LDPE degradation ability of 21.64%. Keywords: Plastics, HDPE, LDPE, Pseudomonas sp. and Bacillus sp.

Abstract

Cats are one of the animals that are often kept as pets by humans. However, it turns out that cats can act as hosts for transmitting various types of dangerous diseases, both caused by endoparasites and ectoparasites. Therefore, the role of cat owners is very important in maintaining the health of their pet cats. Remembering that a cat's life depends on the care it provides. This service activity aims to educate cat owners about the dangers, symptoms and ways to prevent endoparasite and ectoparasite infections in their pet cats. Maintaining the health of your pet cat is important, because the cat's health can affect the health of its owner. This is because some diseases in cats can be transmitted to humans. The method used in this service is a presentation and discussion with the cat owner, after which it continues with the activity of examining the cat's hair and distributing shampoo and cat food. To measure the level of understanding of pet cat owners, a pretest (before the activity) and posttest (at the end of the activity) were carried out. This activity was carried out in RW 001, RT 07, RT 08, and RT 11 Tambaksari, Surabaya, and was attended by 32 pet cat owners, namely 14 domestic cats, 8 Angoras, 6 Persians, and 3 Himalayans. The average pre-test score was 54.07 points, while the average post-test score was 73.70 points. This means that there is an increase in pet cat owners' understanding regarding the symptoms, dangers and ways to prevent endoparasite and ectoparasite infections in cats. It is hoped that this educational activity will be sustainable so that cat owners can always look after and pay attention to the health of their pet cats.
