Abstract

Jayabakti Village, Cidahu District, Sukabumi Regency often experiences waterlogging and even floods when the rain intensity is high. One of the reasons is the reduced water catchment area due to the accumulation of garbage. In general, the knowledge of the people of Jayabakti Village regarding waste management is still minimal. Therefore, this service activity was carried out to provide knowledge, skills, and awareness for the community regarding the application of biopore infiltration holes. The purpose of the program for making biopore holes include increasing water absorption into the soil to reduce flooding, improving the quality of the soil around where biopores are installed, and utilizing organic waste as compost. The water channel repair activities along with the making of biopore holes at several points of puddles have been carried out well and have achieved the expected goals, such as increasing the water absorption into the soil and soil quality to prevent flooding. However, in carrying out subsequent biopore activities, it is necessary to pay attention to the location of the appropriate placement of the holes so that the benefits can be more optimal. In addition, the role of the community is needed in increasing the production and maintenance of biopore so that its use can be sustainable.

Abstract

Fungus comb is a structure made by termite colony Macrotermitinae with lots of potential because it contains secondary metabolites such as steroids, terpenoids, and saponins and compounds containing antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase properties. This study aimed to determine fungus comb extracts' fingerprint pattern, antioxidant capacity, and anti-tyrosinase activity. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) was used to determine fingerprint patterns. The resulting TLC pattern was processed with ImageJ and converted into a densitogram. The fungus comb was extracted with n-hexane and ethyl acetate. TLC results showed that fungus comb extracts contain steroids and terpenoids and have antioxidant properties. The antioxidant capacity assay was carried out with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl reagent. N-hexane extract had an antioxidant capacity value of 9.07 mg ascorbic acid equivalent (AAE)/g extract, while ethyl acetate extract had 6.04 mg AAE/g extract. Anti-tyrosinase activity assay was carried out with L-tyrosine and L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) as substrates. N-hexane extract had a better anti-tyrosinase activity with IC50 of 1804 µg/mL for L-tyrosine and 6784 µg/mL for L-DOPA.

Abstract

Information about colony fragments survival of the termite species Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren in the laboratory is very limited. This study was conducted to determine colony fragments survival of the subterranean termite C. curvignathus Holmgren in laboratory maintenance. The test media used the Termitarium PSIH-IPB: 1999 as a glass vessel containing 4 kg of a mixture of sand and clay with 4 proportions and 4 different pH determined as treatments that would be studied for their effects on termite survival. The results showed that the proportion of the sand:clay mixture affected the survival and feeding preferences of the subterranean termite C. curvignathus Holmgren. The highest percentage of termites that survived was found in the termitarium containing a mixture of sand:clay 50:50. The highest percentage of bait wood weight loss occurred in the test media containing a mixture of sand: clay 50:50. The weight loss of bait wood is directly proportional to the termites survival.

Abstract

The study uncovers the promising anti-termite properties of Eucalyptus pellita bark extract, a resource often discarded as industrial waste in the pulp and paper manufacturing industry. It investigates the anti-termite efficacy of various extracts from E. pellita bark and identifies the extract with the highest activity, followed by a comprehensive phytochemical analysis. Samples of E. pellita inner bark, outer bark, and mixed bark were ground into 40–60 mesh powder and subjected to extraction using soxhletation techniques with successive extraction in increasingly polar solvents (n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol solvents). The anti-termite activity of these extracts was evaluated using no-choice bioassays to determine the termite antifeedant activity through the weight loss percentage of test samples and the mortality rate of Coptotermes sp. Furthermore, Py-GCMS analysis was conducted on extracts exhibiting the highest anti-termite activity to elucidate their chemical composition. The findings revealed that methanol extracts from all three parts of E. pellita bark exhibited the most potent anti-termite activity against Coptotermes sp., as evidenced by the highest mortality rate (100%) and cellulose paper weight loss of 9.57 ± 6.66 mg. These methanol extracts were predominantly composed of phenolic compounds, particularly condensed tannins, suggesting a potential breakthrough in termite control. The findings indicate that E. pellita bark may be a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides for termite control. Furthermore, its utilization may facilitate waste valorization in the pulp and paper industry, thereby supporting environmental sustainability and economic efficiency. Abstract

Wood-destroying termites are quite influential in Indonesia, and the subterranean termite Schedorhinotermes javanicus is one of them. This study was conducted to determine the feeding preferences of subterranean termites S. javanicus on tusam (Pinus merkusii) wood and the influence of their environment. The bait woods made of tusam boards were installed at the experimental site. The weight loss and consumption of bait woods were studied with three test times (one, two, three) months of burial. The subterranean termite specimens attacking the bait woods, soil characteristics, and weather at the experimental field were also identified. The results demonstrated that the average air temperature at the experimental site was 25.4 ± 0.4°C, the average air humidity reached 88.8 ± 2.4%, and the light intensity at the experimental site ranged from 175.67 lux to 3889.7 lux. The results showed that S. javanicus quite actively attacked the bait wood. This can be seen from the high weight loss (35.03%) and the wood consumption (38.78 g). The weight loss after three exposure times in the experimental field was up to 13.54%, 16.38%, and 35.03%, respectively. The wood consumption during the same experimental period reached 14.9 g, 18.25 g, and 38.78 g, sequentially. The high weight loss and the consumption of bait wood indicate the high feeding preference of the subterranean termites S. javanicus on tusam wood. Abstract

[TERMITE DIVERSITY IN TEAK IN TULUNGAGUNG AND WONOGIRI REGENCIES]. Termites are insects that have a very high potential for damage to various stands such as teak. This study aimed to identify the diversity of termite species in teak stands in Tulungagung and Wonogiri regencies. Sampling using the transect method with a transect area of 10 m x 60 m and feeding with pine wood placed in five sub-districts in Tulungagung Regency (Kalidawir, Pucanglaban, Tanggunggunung, Campur Darat, and Ngunut) and five sub-districts in Wonogiri (Jatiroto, Jatisrono, Sidoharjo, Slogohimo, and Purwantoro). The results showed that at least four termite species were found, Macrotermes gilvus, Odontotermes sp., Microtermes insperatus, and  Nasutitermes havilandi. Termite diversity in Wonogiri was classified as medium with the highest H’ value (1.08), while termite diversity in Tulungagung was low with the lowest H’ (0.59). The dominance value of termite species in both districts was classified as medium and the evenness value in all observation locations showed an average high evenness index value. The results of the non-metric multidimensional scalling analysis showed that Jatiroto Subdistrict and Ngunut Subdistrict have a high level of species similarity (0.90).

Abstract

Abstract

The leaves of Dioscorea bulbifera L. have chemical compounds that have the potential as bioinsecticides. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of polar, semi-polar, and non-polar fractions in D. bulbifera leaf extract as bioinsecticides. The research design used was a Factorial, Completely Randomized Design consisting of two factors with five repetitions using the contact method against Cryptotermes cynocephalus. The first factor was the type of solvent: non-polar solvents, semi-polar solvents, and polar solvents. The second factor was concentration, with a range of 5%, 4%, 3%, 2%, and 1%. Based on the results, the D. bulbifera leaves in the polar fraction contain alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, triterpenoids, and saponins. The semi-polar fraction contains alkaloids, phenols, and steroids. The non-polar fraction contains alkaloids, phenols, and triterpenoids. GC-MS identification showed 20 metabolite compounds as potential as botanical insecticides. The highest termite mortality was in the non-polar fraction, with a 4% concentration of 32.80% (equivalent to a corrected mortality of 27.58%). The semi-polar fraction (3.20 g and 15.10%) at a concentration of 5% (2.58 g and 12.19%), showed the best reduction in test weight and degree of damage. This result indicates that D. bulbifera is an effective bioinsecticide in the repellent group.
