Abstract

This research was based on the problem of students' computational thinking skills that are still low, especially in elementary school mathematics subjects in term of students' mathematics anxiety. One solution is to use a learning method to improve computational thinking skills: Problem Based Learning (PBL) modified with the Open-Ended Problem (OEP) and Realistic Mathematic Education (RME) approaches to produce the Open-Ended Based Learning Modified by Realistic Mathematic Education (OEBL-RME) method. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of the OEBL-RME method on computational thinking skills in terms of mathematics anxiety in elementary school students. This research used quasi-experimental method of post-test only control group design using a design treatment by level 2x2. Data were collected using computational thinking skills tests and math anxiety questionnaires and analyzed with the 2-way ANAVA test using SPSS 27. The sample used was 108 grade V elementary school students consisting of 54 students in the experimental class and 54 students in the control class. The results showed that there is an impact of OEBL-RME method on students' computational thinking skills in learning mathematics. In addition, it is proven that there is an interaction between learning methods and mathematical anxiety towards computational thinking skills.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are one of the essential abilities that every student needs to possess in order to face the challenges of the ever-changing times. However, the opposite is often found, as various difficulties and obstacles lead to low levels of students' critical thinking skills. This study aims to analyze the effect of the flipped Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on students' critical thinking skills in fifth-grade mathematics at elementary schools. The method employed was experimental (quasi-experiment) with a posttest-only control group design. Data were collected using a test instrument in the form of essay questions. Data analysis was conducted through normality tests, homogeneity tests, and t-tests to examine the differences in the average critical thinking skills of each group, assisted by SPSS version 27. The t-test results showed a significance value of 0.012, which is lower than 0.05, indicating that the hypothesis is accepted. The findings revealed a significant difference in students' critical thinking skills between the group using the flipped PBL model and the group using the expository model. This research demonstrates that students who learned using the flipped PBL model exhibited better critical thinking skills compared to those who learned using the expository model.

Abstract

Fractions remain a difficult concept for students at the elementary level. On that ground, prospective teachers need to develop the conceptual knowledge to have a deep understanding of the concept and how the concepts are related to each other. Furthermore, they must be able to explain the concepts through media in the form of concrete objects or images to help students grasp the whole concept of fractions. This research investigates the effect of web-based blended learning on the development of Conceptual Knowledge of prospective teachers. Webbased blended learning is a combination of online learning and face to face classroom group discussion. Prospective teachers use Edmodo as the learning management system that contains various learning resources such as videos, documents, and students’ assignments in the form of Google Forms. This study design is a non-experimental post-test. The data obtained by using open tests and analyzed descriptively. Participants are prospective teachers who enrolled in the Teaching Arithmetic course in the 7th semester of the 2018/2019 academic year at the Department of Primary School Teacher Training, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, Indonesia. This study found web-based blending learning is an effective learning system to develop prospective mathematics elementary teachers’ conceptual abilities of fractions. It is recommended that this learning system be included in the prospective teachers’ Education module.
