Abstract

The mangrove ecosystem plays a crucial role in maintaining coastal ecological balance and providing economic benefits through aquaculture. However, the widespread conversion of mangroves into shrimp ponds has contributed to environmental degradation and increased coastal vulnerability. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the silvofishery system, which integrates mangrove planting with fish farming, in improving water quality and milkfish (Chanos chanos) productivity in Sawojajar Village, Brebes Regency. Three types of ponds were analysed: silvofishery with 40% mangrove vegetation (T40), silvofishery with 20% mangrove vegetation (T20), and conventional ponds without mangroves (T0). Water quality parameters, plankton and benthic diversity, and milkfish growth were measured and compared among the ponds. The results indicate that mangrove-integrated ponds exhibited better water quality stabilization, particularly in terms of salinity, pH, and Dissolved Oxygen (DO), which positively influenced overall ecosystem health. Mangrove vegetation also enhanced fish survival rates and supported long-term ecosystem stability. In contrast, conventional ponds exhibited higher short-term productivity but faced greater environmental risks due to unstable water quality. This study underscores the ecological and economic benefits of the silvofishery system as a sustainable model for coastal resource management.

Abstract

Background: Bird conservation in Indonesia is still focused on the areas of conservation of specified government. As in the nature reserves, wildlife clan asylum and national park. Nevertheless there are birds that live outside conservation areas such as forest city. DKI Jakarta as the capital city of Indonesia with a population of the most populous and has a forest city as a habitat of birds in urban areas, it become necessary to know research, equity, diversity, wealth, abundance, similarity species of birds, the difference in noise level and noise influence toward activity-voiced bird in three forest city of DKI Jakarta. Methods: Data retrieval method using point count with 24 point edge and central region in each forest city. Findings: Based on the findings presented in Chapter IV of the thesis, the study showed that higher noise levels and greater human presence significantly reduced bird vocal activity across three urban forests in Jakarta. The average noise level was highest in PT JIEP City Forest (66.55 dB), while human activity peaked in Hutan Kota Srengseng with 152 individuals recorded. A statistically relevant pattern was found: bird vocalization activity and the number of vocalizing birds were highest in areas with lower noise and human presence, supporting the hypothesis that anthropogenic disturbance negatively impacts bird behavior. Conclusion: This study reveals that noise levels and human presence significantly affect bird vocal activity and species diversity in urban forests of Jakarta, with lower noise and fewer people correlating with higher bird sound activity and diversity, highlighting the ecological importance of preserving and managing these green spaces. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study presents a novel investigation by integrating spatial (edge vs. center zones).

Abstract

Rescue, rehabilitation, and release is one of the strategies for orangutan conservation. Jerora Forest School, Sintang Orangutan Center, West Kalimantan, is a place to rehabilitate orangutan. One of the criteria for orangutan to be ready for release is the ability to build nests. The objective of this study was to analyze the nest building ability and nest characteristic preferences of four pre-release female bornean orangutans (Jamilah, Penai, Joss, and Bondan) in Jerora Forest School. Data was collected in November 2024 to January 2025 using the focal animal sampling, ad libitum sampling, and continuous recording methods. Three out of four female pre-release bornean orangutans (Jamilah, Joss, and Bondan) are categorized as moderate on their ability to build nest, while Penai is less capable. Nest trees used by the juvenile orangutan are more diverse than the ones used by the adult orangutan. The characteristics of the nests used by the research subjects were relatively similar across each age group. Nest trees used by the juvenile orangutans are more diverse than the ones used by the adult orangutans. Based on the nest building observation, Jamilah, Joss, and Bondan are ready to be released, while Penai is not ready to be released yet.

Abstract

Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) in captivity require time to be released in order to survive in their natural habitat. This study aims to analyze the daily behavior of orangutans awaiting release at the Jerora Forest School, Sintang Orangutan Center, West Kalimantan. The study was conducted using a focused animal observation method with 5-minute intervals without breaks and without time restrictions. Observations were made on two female orangutans, Jamilah (24 years old) and Penai (21 years old). The results of the data analysis showed that Jamilah's feeding behavior occurred in the enclosure (41.89%) and cage (38.49%), while Penai's feeding behavior occurred in the enclosure (31.41%) and cage (41.22%). The least frequent behavior was playing, with Jamilah playing in the enclosure (4.87%) and cage (3.95%) and Penai playing in the enclosure (4.02%) and cage (3.84%). Jamilah's arboreal movement behavior was 62% and Penai's was 82%. The observation results indicate that Jamilah is more ready for release than Penai based on the orangutan release readiness criteria cited from the Orangutan Conservation and Reintroduction Workshop in 2002.

Abstract

Mineral licks are areas rich in essential minerals where wildlife such as mammals and birds frequent to lick or eat soil (geophagy). Mineral licks are a beneficial site for animals since the behavior increases mineral intake and emulsifies toxins that enter the digestive system. The Belantikan Hulu area is known to have mineral licks in its forest area, two of which are frequently visited by various animals. The purpose of this research is to provide an overview of the ecological characteristics of two different mineral licks, as well as to identify the diversity of animals that use the area. The study was carried out in the Belantikan Hulu area, using the capture and recapture method as well as the laboratory process to identify minerals in mineral licks. The results of the sample analysis revealed that the mineral licks in the two areas contain Na, K, Ca, and Mg. When compared to other locations, the Penggaraman area has the highest concentration of three minerals. During the research period, 2.133 independent photos were captured at two mineral lick sites. A total of 16 animal species were recorded, including 10 species of mammals and six species of birds. There is a symbiotic interaction of mutualism between mammals and birds at the mineral lick, as well as a sympathetic interaction in primates. The ecological characteristics of mineral licks, such as minerals and distance from human activity, affect wildlife visits to mineral lick sites.

Abstract

Indonesia's coastal and marine ecosystems, including coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds, play critical roles in maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance while providing essential ecosystem services such as coastal protection and food resources. This study evaluates the health of aquatic ecosystems on Pramuka Island and Kotok Besar Island by assessing macroalgal diversity and water quality parameters. Using a survey method with quadratic transects, we analyzed species composition, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, and important value index (IVI) of macroalgae, alongside measurements of physical (temperature, salinity, brightness, depth, current speed) and chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen) water parameters. Results identified 26 macroalgal species on Pramuka Island and 19 on Kotok Besar Island, with moderate diversity indices (H’=2.64 and H’=2.26, respectively). The dominant species were Halimeda macroloba (Chlorophyta) and Hypnea asperi (Rhodophyta) on Pramuka Island, and Halimeda macroloba (Chlorophyta) and Sargassum binderi (Phaeophyta) on Kotok Besar Island. Water quality across both islands remained within optimal ranges for macroalgal growth. These findings underscore the ecological significance of macroalgal communities as bioindicators and highlight the need for targeted conservation strategies to preserve these ecosystems amid rising anthropogenic pressures.
