Abstract

Gamification is considered as a strategy to involve students in solving problems related to learning English, rather than playing games. Duolingo, an application that uses gamification, is suitable for junior high school students as a formal classroom setting in English learning. This study aimed at investigating whether the use of gamification in Duolingo App can improve the listening proficiency of junior high school students in English. This research uses quasi-experimental design with quantitative approach. The data is collected using test and observation and analyzed using SPSS 26 App. The results show that the sig. (2 tailed) indicated is 0.002 meaning that there is difference between post-test of experiment class and control class. It is concluded that gamification in Duolingo app affects English listening proficiency of junior high school students. Hence, Duolingo App has the potential to serve as a valuable tool for educators to enhance their students' listening skills. Additionally, gamification can form the foundation for the development of technological learning resources. However, this study has some limitations, and further research involving different educational levels, media, and longer experiment duration is necessary to obtain detailed and reliable results that can be applied to the broader population.

Abstract

Modality is a key in articulating the authors' viewpoints in their arguments. To address the gap, this recent study aims to thoroughly describe the interpersonal meaning in terms of modality within English Literature’s undergraduate theses. Textual analysis using a corpus-based approach was rigorously applied. This research utilized AntConc 4.2.0 version as instrument. The researcher meticulously selected 40 undergraduate theses between March and August 2023. The SFL concept proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) was implemented to analyze the data. The findings demonstrated that undergraduate students largely used modalization in the context of probability across the undergraduate theses. It indicates that they utilize the modality to persuade readers by describing upcoming developments and exchanging information with them. Undergraduate students additionally employed medium modality with greater frequency than low modality. It indicates that they perceive the readers as having the same status as others, which promotes a peaceful relationship between them. It suggests that undergraduate students intentionally become involved with the readers through the ideas presented in the undergraduate theses, harmonizing their positions of authority with the readers, leading to a warm connection between them. Thus, it reflects the close distance between conversational participants.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has become a teaching strategy employed by teachers to support vocational education. However, English instruction in vocational high schools (SMK), especially in Trenggalek Regency, East Java, Indonesia has yet to fully address ESP aspects. Therefore, this study aims to develop an ESP book based on a gamification model and evaluate its effectiveness using ANOVA tests. The research utilized the ADDIE development model, with a private SMK in Trenggalek Regency as the primary research subject. The findings indicate that the book is highly suitable for use, scoring 85% for attractiveness and 84% for appropriateness. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the book is effective for teaching English in the context of entrepreneurship and business at vocational high schools, confirming its suitability for business-oriented English learning. These findings highlight gamified ESP materials’ potential to improve engagement, communication skills, and career readiness in vocational education. Future research should explore whether the book can further enhance students' learning outcomes and other professional skills. How to cite this paper: Anugerahwati, M., Rosyidah, U. J., Abargiel, K. Abstract

The inherent complexity of writing frequently engenders anxiety in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, leading to the necessity of teaching writing innovatively through technology-enhanced approaches. Although extensive previous studies have investigated the implementation of technological tools in teaching writing, a significant research gap exists regarding learners’ perceptions and reception of these tools, especially integrating Threads platform in serving peer feedback. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate EFL students’ perceptions on the effectiveness of Threads-based peer feedback as a mechanism for writing skill development. Employing a mixed method, the investigation collected the data through a questionnaire distributed to 20 EFL students experienced in Threads-based peer feedback in a writing course. Data from the close-ended questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics through SPSS 24 version, while the results of the open-ended questionnaire were analyzed qualitatively through thematic analysis. Findings reveal that the students perceived Threads-based peer feedback effectively facilitated students' impressive learning experience and enhanced engagement as well as comprehension through noticeable technological features. The students also perceived that Threads-based peer feedback improved their writing skills in multiple dimensions. However, certain practical and technical challenges remain throughout Threads-based feedback processes. This research is pedagogically significant to the emerging body of knowledge on the updated digital tool integration in language teaching, especially advanced English writing.
