Abstract

This research aim at examining students’ perceptions regarding the use of tranlanguaging in language classroom. There were 29 students in a university level involved in this research. Mix methods was used to gain data in which observation, questionnaire, and interview were implemented. Observations analyzed qualitatively by using descriptive analysis in detail information. The questionnaire was further analyzed by calculating percentages in Likert scale questionnaire. For interview section, researchers developed the question based on students answers from google form and transcribed all information and responses into English language. The findings show that students assess translanguaging from 2 aspects, positive and negative. Although they have a positive view of translating in certain situations, they do not often use this pedagogy because it is considered less efficient. This research emphasized that students can gain the good impact of translanguaging if they have a deep understanding how to practice it correctly in language classroom.

Abstract

In the post-COVID-19 era, lecturers frequently employ internet tools to facilitate learning. However, the majority of speech act research to date has been conducted using data from online learning platforms such as Learning Management Systems (LMS) or Microsoft Teams. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the occurrence of illocutionary speech acts used by lecturers in the Statistics for Language Research course. Descriptive qualitative research was employed in this study to analyze data obtained from the speech characteristics in messages posted in the Statistics for Language Research (SLR) course on the LMS and conversations between the lecturer and students recorded on Microsoft Teams. Data analysis was conducted based on the speech acts theory from Searle (1969). The study's findings showed that the courses employed four different illocutionary speech patterns. The study's findings revealed that the courses utilized four distinct illocutionary speech patterns. The most frequent occurrences were noted in assertive, expressive, directive, and commissive speech acts. From the data, it is evident that assertive speech acts are the dominant type. Furthermore, commissive speech acts were involved in the LMS, primarily focusing on scheduling plans for class. To conclude, it is implied that the recordings highlighted assertive speech acts as the dominant type, which was mainly utilized for explaining materials to students.

Adjustment to the Indonesian language is a popular issue for international students while studying abroad in Indonesia. This research aims to analyze the ability as well as displaying the point of view of international students in implementing Indonesian language in communication highlighting what are the confusion and shocks from many aspects that they experienced during adjustment of communicating in Indonesia. As how mankind socializes one another through communication, direct or indirect, language is the tool to support communication between two or more people. In this case, Indonesian language as a communication tool exists among many other languages and globally spread its wings not only as a conversation support between two or more people, but also as a language that is learned by people from various backgrounds through a mandatory program of Indonesian for foreign speakers (BIPA). To communicate, adjustment is highly needed, especially to speak Indonesian language as a foreign language.
