Abstract

Every choice of meaning is ideologically motivated. Ideology is most effective when its working is least visible. Interpreting ideology in a text can be seen from the choice of vocabulary and its grammatical construction. To analyze it we need to interpret not just the text but also the relationship between text, and its social condition. According to Fairclough, they can be grouped in three steps, those are description, interpretation and explanation. The stage of description is concerned with formal properties of the text, the interpretation is concerned with the relationship between text and its interactions, the explanation is concerned with the relationship between interpretation and social context. This research aims to analysis the coverage about the revealed case of preferential treatment of Arthalyta Suryani, a convicted bribe, at Pondok Bambu detention written by two online media these are detikNews.com and kompas.com by analyzing their appraisal system and their intertextuality. From the data analysis, ideology of the two media about this case can be seen. The data is taken from the news posted on January the tenth to twelfth 2010.  The methods used to analyze the data are referential method, substitusional method and abductive inference method.     Referential method is to analyze appraisal system and discursivity intertextuality of the text. In order to make the analysis of appraisal system valid, the substitusional method is needed. Then abductive inference method is needed to analyze manifest intertextuality of the text. From the analysis of the data, it can be concluded that every media has its own way to state its ideology. The ideology has closed relation with target market that is the reader. DetikNews.com is strightforward and short news, with incisive vocabulary choices, they are related to news item genre that detikNews.com has, but this media is lack of intertextuality. It makes the news superficial. On the other way, kompas.com has a deep coverage and strong intertextuality, it is suitable for someone who wants comprehensive information.

Abstract

Manual book is a guidebook made to convey information related to the product purchased by consumers. This information is usually detailed regarding warranty information, safety instructions, installation instructions, problem identification, setup instructions, general specifications about the product and maintenance and troubleshooting instructions. The objective of this qualitative research was to analyze schematic structure in a procedure text of Ecovacs Vacuum Robot Deebot Ozmo 920 manual book, especially in Important safety instruction text. There are 44 utterances in text of Important Safety Instruction that are picked up randomly as some samples of analysis. Before they are analyzed, the utterances were grouped with the same linguistics categories, those are simple present tense, imperative sentence, declarative sentence, conjunction, and material process. In material process, there are two categories to discuss, they are passive voice and active voice. Then using schematic structure form, the data were analyzed one by one. The findings of this study show that the language used in Important safety instruction text in manual book is concise, as evidenced by the low percentage of conjunctions (4%). Another is the language used in the text of the Important safety instruction text is effective and direct, as shown by the high percentages of declarative (20%) and imperative sentences (27%), this reduces the possibility of misunderstandings or misinterpretations moreover, the pattern makes the information being conveyed directly easy to understand. Moreover, the study only discusses linguistic features to explain how to describe the use of language in a straightforward procedural text

Abstract

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) merupakan bagian yang penting dan pasti diingat ketika orang akan bepergian ke luar negeri ataupun melanjutkan studi di perguruan tinggi, bahkan beberapa perusahaan mencari tenaga kerja dengan kompetensi TOEFL yang tinggi. Apalagi semenjak pandemi COVID19 laju penggunaan internet sangat tinggi sehingga memaksa pengguna untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris lebih baik lagi agar dapat mengikuti informasi global. Internet sendiri juga menyediakan informasi tentang TOEFL, mulai dari pengenalan dasar hingga cara-cara mudah untuk menyelesaikannya dengan skor atau nilai yang tinggi. Pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian ini menggunakan beberapa tahapan kegiatan. Diawali dengan komunikasi dengan khalayak sasaran kegiatan pengabdian, untuk menggali beberapa permasalahan di bidang Bahasa Inggris secara umum dan di bidang TOEFL secara khusus yang dihadapi oleh khalayak sasaran, berikutnya mengadakan pelatihan dan umpan balik dari kegiatan pengabdian ini. Tujuan dari penyelenggaraan kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah peningkatan informasi akan TOEFL dari guru SMA Al Islam Semarang.

Abstract

Kemampuan Bahasa Inggris terutama TOEFL untuk santri pondok pesantren sangat dibutuhkan terutama agar santri pondok pesantren bisa menghadapi tantangan dunia global, mengingat pondok pesantren masih dianggap institusi yang hanya mengajarkan ilmu agama saja kepada para santrinya. Untuk menjawab kebutuhan jaman dimana segala hal saat ini menggunakan bahasa pengantar bahasa Inggris, untuk mewujudkan hal tersebut maka dibutuhkan sumber dayamanusia yang paham bahasa Inggris yang pada kenyataannya masih belum bisa terwujud. Hal ini karena salah satunya adalah kurangnya pengetahuan dan penguasaan Bahasa Inggris terutama TOEFL. Dari program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat terdahulu yang dilakukan dosen FTIK Universitas Semarang telah diadakan pelatihan mengenai Speaking maka tim Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat FTIK Universitas Semarang kali ini mengadakan kegiatan dengan metode praktikum mengenai pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris terutama TOEFL berbasis web. Abstract

Pemanfaatan Teknologi Digital untuk Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang Inovatif bagi Siswa Kelas XII di Madrasah Aliyah 1 Semarang bertujuan mengatasi beberapa masalah yang dihadapi siswa, seperti rendahnya motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris siswa, keterbatasan fasilitas pembelajaran berbasis teknologi, dan pendekatan pengajaran yang masih tradisional. Siswa kelas XII cenderung kesulitan mengembangkan keterampilan berbicara dan mendengar, karena pembelajaran lebih banyak berfokus pada tata bahasa dan penerjemahan. Oleh karena itu, program ini bertujuan meningkatkan keterampilan bahasa Inggris siswa melalui pemanfaatan teknologi digital yang interaktif. Program ini memberikan pelatihan kepada siswa dalam memanfaatkan aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris seperti Duolingo, Quizlet, dan Kahoot!, untuk mendukung proses belajar secara lebih inovatif. Pelatihan siswa difokuskan pada cara mengintegrasikan teknologi dalam proses pengajaran, sementara siswa akan didampingi dalam menggunakan aplikasi tersebut untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbahasa mereka. Selain itu, metode pengajaran diintegrasikan dengan aktivitas berbasis teknologi, seperti kuis interaktif dan latihan berbicara, yang dirancang untuk meningkatkan partisipasi siswa. Program ini juga melibatkan evaluasi berkala melalui tes keterampilan dan survei untuk memantau perkembangan siswa. Abstract

Desa Wisata Kandri menghadapi tantangan dalam pengelolaan dan promosi wisata akibat tidak adanya data digital dan kurangnya kemampuan dalam mengelola sistem informasi. Hal ini menghambat penyebaran informasi wisata dan menyebabkan rendahnya visibilitas desa di platform digital. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan ini, solusi yang ditawarkan adalah pembuatan sistem informasi resmi yang berisi informasi lengkap tentang potensi desa dengan alamat url https://kandri.id/ serta penerapan strategi SEO agar lebih mudah ditemukan di mesin pencari. Selain itu, pelatihan pengelolaan sistem informasi diberikan kepada pengelola desa agar mereka dapat memperbarui dan mengoptimalkan konten secara mandiri. Metode yang digunakan meliputi analisis kebutuhan, pengembangan sistem informasi, penerapan SEO, dan pelatihan berbasis praktik. Implementasi solusi ini  dapat meningkatkan jumlah kunjungan wisatawan, mempermudah pengelolaan potensi desa, serta meningkatkan daya saing Desa Wisata Kandri dalam industri pariwisata digital. Dengan demikian, inovasi digital ini dapat mendukung pengelolaan wisata yang lebih efektif dan berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Pronunciation errors remain a persistent challenge for learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in this case students of Tourism Department, particularly in words with complex syllable structures, consonant clusters, and morphological endings. This study investigates the frequency and types of pronunciation errors, including phonetic deviations, produced by 22 EFL learners when pronouncing the words messages, colleagues, lunches, and stretch. Using a quantitative descriptive design, participants’ spoken productions were recorded, transcribed using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and analyzed. Findings indicate that errors were most frequent in words with consonant clusters and plural morphemes, reflecting first-language phonological transfer and orthographic interference. Pedagogical implications for targeted pronunciation instruction and technology-assisted learning are discussed.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine how women are represented in popular romantic comedy films by analyzing the portrayal of female agency and gender roles in Runaway Bride and 27 Dresses. Grounded in feminist film theory, the research seeks to understand how the female protagonists negotiate personal autonomy, romantic expectations, and societal pressures within patriarchal cultural contexts. Employing a qualitative textual analysis, the study systematically analyzed key scenes, character development, dialogue, and narrative structures in both films to identify recurring themes related to femininity, independence, and conformity to traditional gender norms. The findings indicated that while both films depict women striving for self-fulfillment and independence, their narratives simultaneously reinforced and challenging dominant gender ideologies. These ambivalent representations reflected broader socio-cultural discourses on contemporary femininity and empowerment. The study concluded that romantic comedies occupy a complex position in mediating feminist ideals, reproducing conventional gender expectations while offering limited spaces for female agency. By highlighting these contradictions, the research contributed to feminist media studies and emphasizes the importance of critical media literacy in interpreting gender representation in mainstream cinema.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to critically examine how the representation of sexual violence against women is constructed in the film Woman from the Rote Island through the analysis of denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings. The main focus is to reveal the social messages, ideologies, and positions of women in patriarchal power relations represented by cinema. Thus, the research is directed to assess the role of film as a medium of social criticism and shaping public awareness. Theoretical framework: This study uses Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, which emphasizes the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth. This framework is used to read signs and symbols in movies. With this approach, patriarchal ideology can be critically analyzed. Literature review: A literature review discusses research on women's representation and sexual violence in film media. Previous studies have shown that movies can reinforce or challenge patriarchal values. This literature became the basis for placing film as part of social discourse. Methods: The method used is qualitative descriptive with semiotic analysis. Data is obtained from scenes, dialogue, and visual symbols in the film. The analysis was carried out by relating the findings to three levels of Barthes' meaning. Results: The results of the study show that films represent women as victims of physical, psychological, and social violence, as well as subjects who have courage and moral strength. On a connotative and mythological level, the film deconstructs the myth of women's honor shaped by patriarchy. The film's narrative emphasizes that sexual violence is a violation of humanity, not a disgrace to the victim. Implications: This study shows that film can be a medium of education and social criticism. These findings encourage the use of cinema to increase empathy and awareness about women's rights. Another implication is the strengthening of the discourse on gender equality in the public space. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in the use of Barthes' semiotics to read the issue of sexual violence in Indonesian films. The study emphasizes women not only as victims, but also as agents of symbolic resistance. Thus, film is understood as a tool for cultural change.
