Studies examining the relationship between English as a lingua franca and English as a foreign language has been emerged sparking excitement among language practitioners. This conceptual paper endeavors to approach English as a lingua franca and English as a foreign language. Employing traditional literature review, this study provides an overview, structures argument, and provides context for new research using thematic discussion. This narrative literature review taps further into the application of English as a lingua franca in English as a foreign language classroom. A thought-provoking issue regarding the position of English as a lingua franca versus English as a foreign language has ignited considerable debate among scholars. Reflecting upon studies presented in this paper, it is summarized that the existence of English as a lingua franca does not replace English as a foreign language. This study also describes the activities that language instructors might consider in integrating English as a lingua franca in English as a foreign language classroom. This study offers unique contribution by offering pedagogical innovation that bridges the concept of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL).

Abstract

This study sought to examine the educational affordance and constraints of smartphone-based assistive technology in language learning from the students’ point of view along with their recommendations on the possible future advancement of smartphone-based assistive technology to help students engage better. This study employed content analysis in analyzing the data obtained from open-ended questions administered to students. The findings of this study denote the use of smartphones in widening vocabulary range, providing practices for English exercise, having attractive and interactive features, and fostering autonomy, self-regulation, and independence learning due to its practicality, portability, accessibility, and flexibility. This study highlights technical problems and confusion as the obstacles emerging from the use of smartphones in language learning. Meanwhile, the recommendations for future smartphone-based application updates are discussed in detail. All in all, smartphone-based assistive language learning application is fruitful for students and is recommended to be used for vocational higher education students as the part of informal learning during the COVID-19 pandemic situation. HIGHLIGHTS: Language learning has stepped forward to more personal learning tools by integrating smartphones as an aid for mobile learning. smartphones are fruitful in widening vocabulary range, providing practices for English exercise, having attractive and interactive features, and fostering autonomy, self-regulation, and independence learning due to its practicality, portability, accessibility, and flexibility. From language learning mobile application, students demanded simpler reading exercises and vocabularies and slower listening practice in the applications.

Abstract

This community service program was designed to address the low level of digital literacy among high school teachers, particularly in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into teaching. Observations revealed that most teachers were unfamiliar with AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, making it difficult for them to adapt to technological changes in education. The main problem identified was the lack of practical knowledge on how to use AI to design interactive and meaningful learning materials. To solve this, a structured training program was conducted at MAN Temanggung, consisting of workshops, hands-on sessions, and task-based learning focused on prompt creation and digital lesson planning. The training empowered teachers to explore, implement, and evaluate AI tools in their classrooms. As a result, participants demonstrated increased confidence and competence in using AI to support their teaching. This program contributes to enhancing the quality of education and aligns with the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education).

Abstract

This study examined the diverse approaches doctoral students take to developing an academic voice when utilizing AI. It examines the manifestation of academic integrity and agency, as well as the interplay among these constructs, through a case study. Thematic analysis, as a data analysis tool, from the responses of six doctoral students enrolled in the Proposal Dissertation Course, sheds light on the critical acceptance of AI. The results of the focus-group discussion and students’ reflective journals reveal that AI is recognized as applicable but does not replace human critical thinking in the manual investigation process. Research shows that students build academic identity through strategies such as making AI a discussion partner to maintain the author’s voice. They also maintain academic integrity by verifying AI sources, avoiding unreal citations, and manually paraphrasing the text. Students leverage AI for technical tasks and time management yet remain non-reliant and edit AI output to ensure it remains original work.

Abstract

This study examines how vocational students mobilize translanguaging as a resource for technological sense-making in online ESP learning. Employing a case study, this study focuses on the depth of meaning rather than linguistic frequency or learning outcomes. It focuses on discourse-oriented analysis. Invoking an online discussion forum in Google Classroom, this study retrieved data from comments and replies from 7th-semester students of the Agricultural Mechanical Engineering Study Program for analysis. Data were analyzed using a qualitative discourse-oriented approach through a translanguaging lens. This study reveals that translanguaging to explain machine concepts and technical functions, linking technology with the needs of the Sambas community, shows critical evaluation and awareness of technological limitations, builds agreement and collaboration, and expresses humor and engagement in online forums. Overall, the study highlights translanguaging as a resource that enables ESP students to make sense of technological ideas through community-oriented technological discourse.
