Abstract

The yttrium based metal-organic framework (MOF) Y-PTC was synthesized by the solvothermal method using perylene as the linker and yttrium as metal ion. This study aims to assess the photocatalytic activity of yttrium-perylenetetracarboxylate (Y-PTC) metal-organic framework (MOF) toward methylene blue and methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The results of the FTIR analysis showed that Y-PTC MOF had a different structure and composition from its precursor (Na4PTC). The Y-PTC MOF has a bandgap energy value of 2.20 eV with a surface area of 47.7487 m2/g. The SEM-EDS analysis showed an elemental composition of yttrium, carbon, and oxygen, were 6.9%, 72.1% and 20.7%, respectively. Furthermore, Y-PTC MOF was able to adsorb dyes at the optimum by 78.10% and 35.57% toward methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) at the dispersion period of 60 mins. Y-PTC MOF exhibited photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of methylene blue and methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The addition of H2O2 inhibited Y-PTC photocatalytic activity towards MO degradation from 50.89% to 26.38%. In contrast to MO, the addition of H2O2 had a positive effect on MB, which increased the degradation from 87.56% to 91.65%. Therefore, Y-PTC MOF possessed the potential of a photocatalyst material in dyes degradation under visible light irradiation.

Abstract

Biodiesel plays an essential role in renewable energy as an alternative fuel to tackle the challenges of global warming, environmental degradation, and alternative fossil fuels. Oleic acid can be converted into biodiesel by the esterification process, which employs heterogeneous catalysts such as metal-organic frameworks (MOF). In this study, Zr/La-BTC MOFs were used as different kinds of catalysts to change oleic acid into biodiesel. The characterization results of Zr-BTC, La-BTC, and Zr/La-BTC using FTIR and XRD show that the MOF has been successfully formed. The crystallite sizes for La-BTC, and Zr/La-BTC MOFs are 15.7407 nm and 39.0392 nm, respectively. The surface area of Zr-BTC, La-BTC, and Zr/La-BTC MOFs are 167.101 m2/g, 12.328 m2/g, and 4.764 m2/g. The morphology of Zr-BTC MOF using SEM is irregular, La-BTC is rod-shaped crystal, and Zr/La-BTC is like a knot bond with a narrow waist. The most optimal reaction was obtained at a 5% (w/w) catalyst dosage of total oleic acid and methanol (1:60 mol), 65 °C, and a reaction time of 4 hours, producing 78.11% oleic acid conversion. GC-MS analysis identified that the biodiesel contains oleic acid, palmitic acid, methyl oleate, and methyl palmitate.

Abstract

Phosphate mobility and bioavailability play critical roles in aquatic ecosystems, yet conventional monitoring methods are limited by sample disturbance and poor representation of in-situ conditions. The Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films (DGT) technique overcomes these limitations by enabling passive, in-situ measurement that accurately reflects natural solute diffusion and sediment resupply dynamics. This study introduces lanthanum metal-organic frameworks (La-MOF) as a novel selective binding agent in a DGT for in situ phosphate monitoring. La-MOF was synthesized via solvothermal using DMF (La-MOF 1) and mixed DMF/water (La-MOF 2), then characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDX, and BET analysis. Structural characterization confirmed successful framework formation for both materials. La-MOF 2 exhibited improved crystallinity, more homogeneous morphology, higher specific surface area (84.96 m2 g-1) and larger pore volume (0.090 cc g-1) compared to La-MOF 1. The selectivity performance of La-MOF DGT was evaluated across pH 2-11 and in the presence of competing anions (NO3-, SO42-, and CO32-). Optimal phosphate uptake occurred at pH 4-7, corresponding to the predominance of H2PO4- species. The inhibitory effect on phosphate uptake followed the order: NO3⁻ > CO3²⁻ > SO4²⁻. These findings demonstrate the potential applicability of La-MOF as a selective binding agent for DGT-based phosphate monitoring in aquatic environments.
