Abstract

The utilization of fishbone as the carbon source for methylene blue adsorption has been successfully studied. Fishbone was prepared from two kinds of fish such as marine fisheries (ex. Tenggiri) and freshwater fisheries (ex. Belida). The carbons were prepared by carbonation of fishbone powder at  500 °C for 2 h. Physical properties of carbons were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and hydrophobicity. The carbons were utilized as the adsorbent for removing methylene blue by varying the contact time, initial dye concentration, and temperature. It is concluded that both carbons can very good adsorb the methylene blue. The adsorption performance of carbon (TFC) from Tenggiri fish is better than carbon (BFC) from Belida fish. The adsorption was well fitted with the Langmuir adsorption model (R2 ~ 0.998) and the pseudo-second-order model. This indicated that the dye molecules were adsorbed on the surface-active site of carbon via chemical binding, forming an adsorbate monolayer. Thermodynamic parameters, including the Gibbs free energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS), indicated that the adsorption of methylene blue onto the carbon from fishbone was spontaneous. Thus, carbon from fishbone can be applied as a low-cost adsorbent to treat industrial effluents contaminated with methylene blue. Copyright © 2022 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Abstract

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) has emerged as an essential industrial monomer. However, the toxic by-production and shortage supply of MMA in the global market has gained great attention. Herein, a one-step synthesis to produce MMA from isobutene via a direct oxidative esterification process has been demonstrated to curb the aforementioned downsides. Thermodynamic analysis via Gibbs free energy minimization method proved the feasibility of this route via the equilibrium constant. Despite tert-butanol and isobutane showed higher equilibrium constant than isobutene, they should be avoided. Isobutane is highly flammable while the precursor of tert-butanol is exorbitant. Thus, isobutene was selected for the equilibrium compositions screening. Isobutene conversion was 90% and 15% MMA yield at 700 °C and IBN: O2: MeOH ratio with 1:7:1. This route is mainly limited by the generation of side reactions from the reaction of CH3OH and O2. By varying the feedstock ratio at 1:2:1, the MMA yield increased to ~25%. Abstract

Photocatalysts have gained enormous attention in water decontamination due to their economic viable and intriguing properties. Recently, graphene-based semiconductors have become the sparkling star on the horizon of material science. The coupling of two-dimensional graphene and its derivatives (graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide) with semiconductors could effectively enhance the efficiency in organic wastewater degradation under light irradiation. Hence, a collective study on this topic is necessary.  Four types of graphene-based semiconductors, viz. titania, zinc oxide, cadmium sulfide, and bismuth oxychloride, are explored. Besides, synthesis approaches and properties of these photocatalysts are elucidated too. We hope this review could enable us to rationally design and harness the morphology, structure and electronic properties of these advanced materials. Abstract

The evaluation of kinetic adsorption process of sulfonated carbon-derived from Eichhornia crassipes in the adsorption of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution has been carried out. The sulfonated carbon-derived from E. crassipes (EGS-600) was prepared by carbonation of E. crassipes powder at 600 °C for 1 h, followed by sulfonation with concentrated sulfuric acid for 3 h. The physical properties of the adsorbents were characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption studies. Adsorption study using methylene blue dye was carried out by varying the contact time and initial dye concentration for investigated kinetics adsorption models. The effect of varying temperature was used to determine the thermodynamic parameter value of ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS. The results showed that the equilibrium adsorption capacity was 98% when EGS-600 is used as an adsorbent. The methylene blue dye adsorption onto adsorbent takes place spontaneity and follows a pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model.

Abstract

The modified coal char from low-rank coal by sulfonation, titanium impregnation and followed by alkyl silylation possesses high catalytic activity in styrene oxidation. The surface of coal char was undergone several steps as such: modification using concentrated sulfuric acid in the sulfonation process, impregnation of 500 mmol titanium(IV) isopropoxide and followed by alkyl silylation of n-octadecyltriclorosilane (OTS). The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), IR spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, and hydrophobicity. The catalytic activity of the catalysts has been examined in the liquid phase styrene oxidation by using aqueous hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. The catalytic study showed the alkyl silylation could enhance the catalytic activity of Ti-SO3H/CC-600(2.0). High catalytic activity and reusability of the o-Ti-SO3H/CC-600(2.0) were related to the modification of local environment of titanium active sites and the enhancement the hydrophobicity of catalyst particle by alkyl silylation.
