Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Semantic Mechanism of Humor in the IT Crowd sitcom, and also to find out the deviations of the linguistic elements contained in the humor. In this study, the sources of data were humorous dialogues contained in the IT Crowd sitcom using descriptive methods. The results of the study show that the linguistic elements found in all the conversations in the sitcom including lexical ambiguity (LA), causal fallacy (CF), presupposition (Pr), locutionary (Lc), and topic progression (TP). In addition, a semantic mechanism of humor is also needed in this study because from this mechanism one can understand what causes humor to be funny. After understanding this mechanism, then we can know what linguistic expectations deviations are contained in the humor, and research shows that most humor occurs due to the appearance of unexpected meaning [M2] from what is expected [M1].

Abstract

Peningkatan kualitas siswa merupakan salah satu tugas dunia pendidikan. Siswa sekolah dasar memiliki banyak perbedaan dengan orang usia dewasa dalam mempelajari kosakata bahasa Inggris. Jika orang usia dewasa akan cepat menyerap kosakata baru dan mudah memusatkan perhatiannya pada proses pembelajaran, sementara siswa sekolah dasar memerlukan pengulangan dalam menyerap kosakata dan belum bisa memusatkan perhatiannya dengan cepat. Siswa-siswi SDN 26 Jati Utara Padang dalah salah satu sekolah dasar di kota Padang yang belum menerapkan Bahasa Inggris sebagai mata pelajaran wajib di sekolah, akan tetapi siswa ini memiliki hak untuk mengetahui bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa Internasional. Penerapan media pembelajaran berbasis pictures dengan topik school objects merupakan terobosan yang dilakukan tim pengabdian kepada masyarakat UPI YPTK Padang untuk membantu siswa serta menambah kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa SDN 26 Jati Utara Padang. Pengabdian ini dilakukan dengan memilih media pembelajaran yang tepat. Kendala yang ditemui ialah siswa menyelesaikan tulisan bahasa Inggris dalam rentang waktu yang lama diakibatkan kurangnya tepatnya pengejaan kosakata bahasa Inggris. Oleh sebab itu, dengan adanya kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini, kegelisahan yang dirasakan pihak sekolah bisa teratasi, serta siswa termotivasi untuk belajar bahasa Inggris dengan tingkat kesulitan yang berbeda.

Abstract

This research is conducted to know the use of English in promoting fashion in social media. In social media, there are many people who promoting their fashion to sell. They sometimes use English to promote in order to attract readers’ attention to buy. The aim of the research is to know how the meaning and word order of the English used in promoting fashion. This research is descriptive research. The data of the research are taken from instagram. The results of the research shows that the English used in promoting fashion is not correct and does not follow the correct word order and grammar.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang tema dan rema dalam cerpen sebagai pendekatan dengan menggunakan Pendekatan Fungsional. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi tema dan rema, mengklasifikasikan jenis dan komponen tema dan mendeskripsikan hubungan antara tema dan perkembangan teks. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif. Data diambil dari cerita The Hare and The Tortoise oleh Clarke Hutton. Beberapa teori berdasarkan Tata Bahasa Inggris Fungsional digunakan untuk menganalisis data. Temuan dari penelitian ini adalah tiga jenis tema (Topical, Interpersonal, dan Textual Theme) yang dapat ditemukan dalam data. Sedangkan komponen tema dalam kategori tema tekstual adalah conjunctive adjunct, conjunctive, structural, continuative dan conjunctive. Sedangkan untuk tema topikal, komponen tema adalah subjek dan tema topikal bertanda (adverbial as theme). Untuk mendapatkan korelasi tema dan perkembangan teks, peneliti telah mengidentifikasi dan mengklasifikasikan teks cerpen. Terakhir, struktur tema dan rema klausa mengklarifikasi cerita menggunakan pola tema tetap.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to describe the activity of C-L-C (Central Learning and Character) program in buiding character and improving English vocabulary of Elementary School Students. C-L-C Programme has created integrated learning acvities to build students’ character and improve English vocabulary for elementary  school students. The design of this study was a descriptive qualitative research. The researcher described the activities of English insrtuctor and students in building students’character and improving English vocabulary. There was 23 elementary School students had joinned on C-L-C program. The techniques for collecting the data were observation, documentation and questionnaire. The finding of this study showed that some activities did by the English instructor on C-L-C program to build the students’ character and improve the students’ English vocabulary were reading a text, writing, painting, gaming, pronouncing the new vocabulary, retelling the story, disscussing the character value in the story and preparing the students’ characters’ book. The result of this study, the C-L-C programme had built students’ character on discipline, responsibility, honor the other people and care to the environmen. Besides C-L-C had improved the students’ English vocabualry. It can be seen from the participation of students in learning process and the recapitulation of the students’ English test score. It showed that 1 students was poor, 5 students were satisfactory, 8 students were good and 9 students were very good. It can be concluded that C-L-C programme built students’ character and improved the students’ English vocabulary.  Keywords:  Character Building , teaching English vocabulary

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan materi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang kontekstual untuk situasi darurat kesehatan. Metode studi literatur digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi kebutuhan komunikasi spesifik selama krisis kesehatan, menganalisis literatur terkait, dan merancang materi pembelajaran berbasis temuan literatur. Materi yang dikembangkan kemudian divalidasi oleh ahli bahasa Inggris, ahli kesehatan, dan ahli pendidikan. Uji coba dilakukan dengan kelompok target untuk mengevaluasi efektivitas materi. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa materi pembelajaran ini berhasil meningkatkan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris dalam konteks darurat kesehatan.

Abstract

The research was conducted aiming to an analysis of students’ ability in writing descriptive texts at the ninth grade of SMPIT Sabbihisma Padang. The method used in this research is the qualitative method. The subjects of this study were the 32 students of the IX-1 class. The research investigated the descriptive writing text which had been done by the ninth-grade students of SMPIT Sabbihisma Padang. The researcher analyzed the students’ writing results referring to the five aspects. They were organization ideas, developed ideas, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. After analyzing the texts written by the student, the researcher categorizes them into four categories, namely excellent, good, fair, and poor. The result is 1 student or 3, 13%, there are 6 students or 18, 75%, there are 3 students or 9, 37%, and there are 22 students or 68, 75%. The average students’ capability in writing descriptive text is poor. The problems faced are (1) the students have problems with the limited number of vocabulary, (2) developing the idea in a descriptive text, (3) grammar mastery. Grammar mastery is the most problem faced by the students. The causes of the problem are (1) students’ low motivation, (2) Understanding.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kesalahan pada tulisan siswa, salah satunya adalah penggalan kalimat. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dengan jenis analisis dokumen. Pengambilan sampel data dilakukan dengan teknik purposive sampling. Sampel penelitian terdiri dari 5 partisipan, dengan jumlah populasinya 22 partisipan. Data yang peneliti lakukan adalah analisis dokumen tugas menulis akademik mahasiswa, berupa menganalisis kalimat tanpa kata kerja atau subjek, kalimat tanpa huruf kapital, kalimat dengan tanda baca yang tidak tepat, dan kalimat tanpa klausa utama atau independen. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam pengumpulan data adalah tugas menulis akademik. Analisis data menggunakan bentuk kuis oleh Arnold (2017). Berdasarkan penelitian yang telah dilakukan diperoleh tugas I < tugas II, dengan selisih total 51 skor. Konstruksi masing-masing jenis penggalan kalimat yang terdapat pada tugas penulisan skripsi mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Putra Indonesia “YPTK” Padang tidak lengkap.

Abstract

This study uses a descriptive design in describing the abilities of students in grade VIII of Junior High School. The ability studied is the ability of students' comparative level in writing simple sentences using English. The ability tested is the degree of comparison of adjectives by giving students a writing test. The data was processed from taking convenience sampling of 20 students who were active in class. The test site was grade VIII students at the State Islamic Junior High School (MTsN) 5 Tebo. The researcher classified students' abilities based on the Madrasah Working Group (KKM) with a standard value of 75 (seventy-five). Students who have a score below 75 (seventy-five), are declared to have low abilities and those who have higher scores are declared to have high abilities. The test results are students with high abilities amounting to 15% who can write simple sentences using degrees of comparison in adjectives. Students with low abilities are 85% who cannot write simple sentences using degrees of comparison in adjectives. So, this study can be a reference in providing lessons on the ability to write simple sentences using adjectives to students in grade VIII of Junior High School.

Abstract

Generally, elementary school students tend to like learning activities with different actions and movements and like the use of visual media. Another problem that is often found in elementary school students is having a very short attention span (short attention span), so they are usually easily bored with learning activities after 7-10 minutes. The tendency of using conventional and monotonous methods given by the school to children, apparently still does not motivate students to study English regularly. Therefore, it is necessary to have innovative and creative actions to minimize the anxiety felt by the school, using total Physical Response, as well as knowing the talents and learning interests of elementary school students in the English language needs which can be applied in daily activities
