Abstract

This research aimed to estimate carcass quality of Pasundan cattle using ultrasound imaging based on Body Condition Score (BCS). Total 31 head of female cattle with age ranging from 4 to 7 years from Regional Technical Implementation Unit of the Center for Artificial Insemination and Artificial Insemination for Beef Cattle Development at Ciamis West Java, Indonesia with BCS ranging from 1.0-4.0. The marbling score, intramuscular fat (IMF), backfat thickness (LP), and thickness musculus of m. longissimus dorsi (LD), m. psoas major (PM), m. psoas minor (PMN), m. gluteus medius (GM) and m. biceps femoris (BF) were scanned using ultrasound on 3 different locations, i.e. on 12th-13th ribs (thorax), lumbar 4th - 5th (lumbar), and between tuber coxae and tuber ischii (gluteal) with 5 MHz frequency of convex transducer. The results showed that BCS increased when LP, marbling score and IMF from m. LD, m. PM, m. PMN, and m. GM was rising. Pasundan cattle showed marbling scores ranging from score 1 to 5 and percentage IMF ranging from 2.62% to 4.82%. Body Condition Score affected carcass quality of Pasundan cattle on parameters such as musculus thickness, marbling score, and intramuscular fat (IMF) from ultrasound imaging of m. LD, m. PM. m. PMN, m. GM, and m. BF.

Abstract

In Sunda Porcupine, wound healing occurred in a relative quick period, minimum scar formation, and without infection even though the wound is large and severe. The physiology which involved blood function as the systemic component is important in wound healing. This study aimed to acknowledged the macroscopic anatomy of the clinical signs, the role of blood component, and blood biochemistry in wound healing in Sunda porcupine (Hystrix javanica). The study used 6 adults of Sunda porcupine (3 males and 3 females). Stadium 3 wounds (full-thickness wound) were applied in thoracodorsal and lumbosacral region, approximately 10-11 cm2. Clinical signs observations were performed in day 0, 3, 7, 10, 14, 30, and 40, while blood collection were conducted in day 0, 7, 14, 21, 30, and 40 post wounding. The results of this study showed that wound closure occurred in 30-40 days post wounding with thoracodorsal wound closed faster than that in lumbosacral. Blood profile alteration during wound healing showed that wound healing occurred well. The increasing profile of erythrocytes and platelets during wound healing showed that these two components might become important of internal factor in wound closure, whereas the alteration of leucocytes showed no prolonged inflammation in wound healing in Sunda porcupine. The alteration of liver enzyme and renal function showed a fluctuation however the wound healing occurred well, whereas the decreased blood glucose level indicated no prolonged wound healing to chronic stage. These results give the information of clinical view and internal factors which contribute to the wound healing in the skin of Sunda porcupine.

Abstract

Abstract

Common palm civet is a mamalia which often used to produce luwak coffee. Therefore  health status of common palm civet is very important to be considered because force feeding of coffee can turn to stress condition. Glucose level, leukocyte profile and ratio N/L were often used as stress indicator. This study was aimed to determine glucose levels from blood of common palm civet, determine leukocyte profile and its deffirentiation also to calculate neutrophyl/limpocyte ratio from six common palm civet there were three group of observation, there were common palm civet coffe eaters and not coffe eaters. Blood samples were taken intracardially for further analyzed using manual blood method. Glucose levels of coffee eaters common palm civet was higher than common palm civet that was not coffee eaters. Stress index of coffee eaters common palm civet (0,516) was higher than not coffee eaters (0,463), but it was still in the normal range. Common palm civet that eat coffee continuosly can lead to oxidative stress condition.

Abstract

Alpha tocopherol, as the most active component of Vitamine E, is identified as antioxidant present in some parts of the skin and the concentration is vary in several regions of the body due to the skin characteristic of the region. Sunda porcupine (Hystrix javanica) is one of the rodents in Indonesia with quill as its spesific skin characteristic. The porcupine quill are distributed in various shapes and sizes in body parts, while dorsal regions and the tail is the body part that has the most developed quill form. This study aimed to measure alpha tocopherol content in the dorsal region skin of male and female Sunda porcupine. The study used skin samples of thoracodorsal and lumbosacral regions of 6 adult Sunda porcupine (3 males and 3 females) and 2 frozen specimens (1 male and 1 female). Samples were prepared and processed for analysis through high performance liquid chromatography. The results showed that the level of tocopherol in the dorsal thoracic region of males and females was much higher than that of the lumbosacral region. The results of this study indicate the characteristics of the skin region affect the levels of alpha tocopherol in the region.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the histological characteristic, type, and distribution of connective tissue in Sunda porcupine skin. The investigation was carried out in three adult of sunda porcupines at microscopic level using hematoxylin eosin, Masson thrichrome, Verhoeffs van Gieson, alcian blue pH 2.5 and periodic acid Schiff staining methods. Skin consists of epidermis, dermis hypodermis, and subcutaneous muscle. Quill follicles were the main and dominant structure as well as the specific characteristic on Sunda porcupine skin. The connective tissue was distributed well in basal membrane, dermis, quill follicle, and hypodermis with various intensity and density. The collagen was the main fiber found in the skin while the elastin fiber was not observed. The acid carbohydrate was found distributed well in the skin while the neutral carbohydrate was not detected in this study. In addition the fibers of connective tissue associated with the adipose tissue which found plentifully in quill follicles and hypodermis. The present results showed that the wide distribution of connective tissue might have an important role on the wound healing physiology of Sunda porcupine skin.

Abstract

The study aimed to analyze the dynamics of the development of cortical and medullary cells of adrenal gland in the long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) during pre- and postnatal period. The samples of adrenal glands were taken from 5 fetuses aged 70, 85, 100, 120, and 150 days of gestation, a newborn aged 10, and an infant aged 105 days old. The samples of the adrenal glands were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Masson trichrome (Goldner’s modification). The results showed that the fetal adrenal cortex consisted of a definitive and fetal zones, but in the late gestation (fetus aged 150 days of gestation), the transitional zone appeared between both zones. At the postnatal period, the definitive zone changed to glomerulosa zone, while the outer cells of the transitional zone changed to fasciculata zone which radially arranged. The results indicated that the fetal zone was present until birth and it will disappear gradually after birth. The medullary cells were found at the fetal stages as an irregular structure of small islands of chromaffin cells in the fetal zone. This structure migrated slowly to the center of the adrenal glands. The characteristics of mature chromaffin cells were found in the adrenal glands at postnatal period. In conclusion, the cortex adrenal of the newborn of long-tailed macaque consisted of zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata, zona transitional, and the remaining fetal zone that has dissapeared gradually after birth.
