Abstract

This study aims to analyse spanning 1996–2022, analyzed deforestation determinants in Indonesia using a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) to assess short and long-term variable relationships. We focused on GDP per capita, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), population density, and renewable energy consumption. Results support the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis, showing an inverted U-shaped relationship between GDP per capita and deforestation. Deforestation initially increased with economic growth but declined after a turning point of USD 2,443.41 million GDP per capita, around 2009–2010. This suggests that as Indonesia developed, environmental awareness and forest conservation efforts increased. Furthermore, population density and renewable energy consumption significantly reduced deforestation, While FDI had an insignificant positive effect, its impact was statistically irrelevant when considering overall market trends. Policy implications highlight the need for stronger forest governance post-economic development era, to ensure sustainable management, combat illegal activities, and mitigate environmental degradation and have turning point, strict regulation of land-based renewable energy projects, and careful monitoring of investments potentially threatening forest sustainability.

Abstract

Government cash transfer programs aim to assist individuals or households in escaping poverty. However, concerns have arisen regarding the misuse of such assistance for tertiary expenditures, such as tobacco and alcohol. This study aims to evaluate the impact of government assistance on household consumption patterns in Indonesia. Utilizing data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS), we apply Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Instrumental Variable Regression approaches to analyze this impact. The results indicate that an increase in cash transfer amounts contributes to an overall increase in household expenditures, including tertiary consumption. A significant positive relationship between cash transfers and tertiary consumption expenditures suggests the potential for moral hazard issues among certain households in Indonesia

Abstract

This study examines the macroeconomic factors influencing foreign exchange reserves in five ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines) during the 2022–2024 period, in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising global interest rates. A panel data regression using the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) was employed. Independent variables include exports, imports, exchange rates, inflation, benchmark interest rates, and foreign direct investment (FDI), with foreign exchange reserves as the dependent variable. Results show that all variables have significant effects. Imports, exchange rates, interest rates, inflation, and FDI contribute to the increase in reserves, while exports have a negative impact. This suggests that heavy reliance on imported raw materials reduces the positive contribution of exports. Policy implications include strengthening export structures, managing productive imports, stabilizing exchange rates, controlling inflation, and enhancing the quality of FDI. The findings offer empirical insights for external resilience strategies in the ASEAN region.

Abstract

This study aims to empirically explore the condition of financial inclusion and relation between financial services sector development, real sector growth, and poverty alleviation. This study focuses on 334 Indonesian districts and cities in 2021. Financial inclusion measured by the penetration, availability, and utilization of banking services, which accumulate into a financial inclusion index. To examine the direct and indirect effects of financial inclusion on poverty through aggregate income, the Hayes Process Macro bootstrapping technique was used. In 2021 Central Jakarta has the highest level of financial inclusion in Indonesia, with an index of 0.8. The main form of financial inclusion is the availability of commercial bank offices and rural banks, while bank account ownership and the use of deposit and loan products in the formal financial services sector play a smaller role in the financial inclusion of Indonesian districts and cities in 2021. The findings indicate that financial inclusion has a positive and significant effect on aggregate income, a negative and significant effect on poverty, and aggregate income can mediate the relationship between financial inclusion and poverty.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the gap phenomenon in Asia and Africa, where there is a discrepancy between theory and previous research and the reality in these two regions. Based on government governance data, Asia and Africa have institutional qualities that could be better than other regions in the world. However, poor institutional quality does not reduce economic growth in the Asian and African regions. This research uses data from the World Bank and World Governance Indicators for the 2000-2022 period using variables of government governance, government spending, and economic growth. This research uses the FMOLS method using Eviews 10. The research results show that political stability, regulatory quality, and control of corruption have a positive and significant effect on economic growth in the Asian and African regions. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of government performance and the rule of law positively and significantly impact economic growth in the Asian region but do not influence the African region. The research results on the voice and accountability variables show no influence on economic growth in the Asian region. Still, the African region positively and significantly impacts economic growth.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze some factors influencing fluctuations of palm oil (CPO) prices in 3 (three) countries in Southeast Asia. This study analyzes the factors that influence domestic CPO prices from the supply and demand side. International CPO prices, coconut oil prices, and CPO consumption are factors that influence domestic CPO price fluctuations from the demand side, while CPO production is a factor affecting domestic CPO price fluctuations from the supply side. This study uses a quantitative method, where the type of data used in this study is panel data taken from 3 countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand from 1998-2019. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression, where the variables used included domestic CPO prices, international CPO prices, coconut oil prices, CPO production, and CPO consumption as independent variables. This study shows that all the independent variables significantly affect the domestic CPO price variable, except for the CPO consumption variable, and all the independent variables have a positive effect on the domestic CPO price variable, except for the CPO production variable. The international CPO price variable is the most dominant in influencing domestic CPO price fluctuations.
