Abstract

The composite price index and return of stocks are the important indicators, both as a measure of the company's portfolio performance, as well as an indicator of macroeconomic health and the aggregate investment. In addition, the stock prices are also influenced by macroeconomic variables and one of the most important is the exchange rates. The objective of this study is to determine the behavior of exchange rate affects the stock returns in Southeast Asia, pre and post of the 2008 world financial crisis. By employing the daily stock market return in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore more than seventeen years from 1 September 1999 to 31 March 2017, this study utilizes Engle-Granger error correction model and cointegration approach to investigate and compare the long and short run of the structural effect of the exchange rates on stock returns. To differentiate the behavior of variables between pre and post occurrence of 2008 world financial crisis, the estimation of the model is divided into two periods. This study finds that the exchange rate growth influence the stock returns in the long and short run, and proves that the cointegration between the two variables exist in all countries. The study has the implication that the exchange rate, which the one of the fundamental measures of a country's macroeconomic health, is an important determinant of influencing stock return, even its effects are responded by the stock return in one day.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the existence and effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the stock market over the long-term and short-term in Indonesia. The study followed Krugman’s (1979) approach stating the pandemic crisis problems have the potential to decrease the performance of the international balance of payments which will ultimately lead to uncertainty in the market. The research method was the Error Correction Model (ECM) with stock markets as an endogenous variable; and exchange rate, inflation, interest rate, foreign stock markets, commodity price, and pandemic as exogenous variables. The pandemic indicator was measured by total accumulative cases of Covid-19 per day in Indonesia. Using ECM, the result showed that foreign interest rates and commodity prices positively affect the stock markets. Conversely, the exchange rate has a negative effect on the stock markets. However, the estimation fails to reflect the significant impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the short-term, but it has a negative effect on stock markets in the long-term. This result implies that the higher total accumulative cases of Covid-19 has been the source of Indonesia’s stock market weakness in the long-term. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first to examine Indonesia’s stock market’s pandemic impact between the short term and long term.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze some factors influencing fluctuations of palm oil (CPO) prices in 3 (three) countries in Southeast Asia. This study analyzes the factors that influence domestic CPO prices from the supply and demand side. International CPO prices, coconut oil prices, and CPO consumption are factors that influence domestic CPO price fluctuations from the demand side, while CPO production is a factor affecting domestic CPO price fluctuations from the supply side. This study uses a quantitative method, where the type of data used in this study is panel data taken from 3 countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand from 1998-2019. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression, where the variables used included domestic CPO prices, international CPO prices, coconut oil prices, CPO production, and CPO consumption as independent variables. This study shows that all the independent variables significantly affect the domestic CPO price variable, except for the CPO consumption variable, and all the independent variables have a positive effect on the domestic CPO price variable, except for the CPO production variable. The international CPO price variable is the most dominant in influencing domestic CPO price fluctuations.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of firm size, industry type, profitability, firm age, environmental performance, institutional ownership, and gender diversity on environmental disclosure. The quantity of environmental disclosure is measured using disclosure scoring by giving “1” for items disclosed and “0” for items that are not disclosed. The population used in this study are manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) and Kuala Lumpur, Stock. Exchange (KLSE) in the year 2019. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling which resulted in 74 companies. The analytical technique used in this research is multiple linear regression analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25. The results of this study indicate that company size, company age, and environmental performance have a significant positive effect on environmental disclosure. The type of industry, profitability, institutional ownership, and gender diversity does not affect environmental disclosure. Based on the study results, it can be concluded that companies that are large in size and mature in age and equipped with ownership of ISO 14001 certification can contribute to making more comprehensive environmental disclosures.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of environmental quality and gender equality on human welfare in Indonesia from 2015-2020, using a panel database of 33 provinces. The results of the model selection testing with the Chow test and the Hausman test recommend regression analysis using the Fix Effect Model (FEM). This study resulted in the finding that there is a unidirectional and significant relationship between gender equality and human well-being. That means that gender inequality has the opposite effect. The second finding is that statistically, there is a positive relationship between environmental quality and human welfare in the case of provinces in Indonesia. The estimation results show that economic growth has a positive and significant relationship with human well-being in Indonesia. This study indicates that human well-being in Indonesia before and during the Covid-19 pandemic shows differences. The novelty of this study is to analyze the effect of gender equality and environmental quality indicators in influencing human welfare. In addition, this research also accommodates the Covid-19 pandemic period in an empirical model.
