Abstract

The widespread circulation of hoaxes and hate speech on social media has become one of the major challenges in the digital era. Provocative content, such as the Fufufafa case, demonstrates how language can be used as a tool to manipulate public opinion and trigger social conflict. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach by analyzing user posts and comments containing hoaxes and hate speech. Data were collected through screenshot documentation, categorized, and analyzed within a forensic linguistics framework, focusing on lexical, pragmatic, and rhetorical aspects. The findings reveal that hoaxes are characterized by excessive generalizations, pseudo-factual claims, and hyperbolic diction; whereas hate speech is marked by negative labeling, stereotyping, and provocative diction targeting specific group identities. These results highlight the potential of forensic linguistics as a significant instrument in detecting and preventing the spread of harmful content in digital spaces. The study is expected to contribute academically to forensic linguistics research and provide practical benefits in enhancing society’s digital literacy.

Abstract

This study analyzes conceptual metaphors in two ABBA songs, namely “Slipping Through My Fingers” and “The Winner Takes It All.” The analysis applies Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) theory, which classifies metaphors into three types: structural, ontological, and orientational metaphors. The data consist of 17 metaphorical expressions collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method. The results show that “Slipping Through My Fingers” is dominated by ontological metaphors that conceptualize time, memory, and emotions as physical entities that can be held, stored, or lost. Meanwhile, “The Winner Takes It All” is dominated by structural metaphors that represent romantic relationships as a competitive game involving winning, losing, and rules. These findings demonstrate that metaphors in both songs strengthen emotional expression and transform abstract experiences into concrete and perceptible imagery

Abstract

Dyslexia is a common yet complex learning disorder that interferes with an individual’s ability to read and write fluently, despite adequate intelligence and access to education. This study employs a qualitative literature review to examine dyslexia through a psycholinguistic lens, focusing on how deficits in phonological processing, lexical access, and working memory contribute to the core challenges in reading and writing. Common manifestations—including substitution, omission, and inversion errors in reading, as well as spelling difficulties, morphological simplification, and disorganized sentence structure in writing—are discussed in relation to underlying cognitive mechanisms. The review also explores the multifactorial causes of dyslexia, emphasizing the roles of genetic, neurobiological, cognitive, and environmental factors. In addressing intervention strategies, the study highlights structured literacy approaches, the use of assistive technologies, and the importance of teacher training and policy support. By synthesizing current research, this review underscores the need for early identification and individualized educational responses. Ultimately, it contributes to a more holistic understanding of dyslexia and supports the development of inclusive practices that respond to the diverse needs of dyslexic learners.

Abstract

Aphasia, a language disorder resulting from brain damage, significantly impacts both language production and comprehension. This paper reviews the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying aphasia, with a focus on expressive and receptive language deficits across different subtypes. In Broca's aphasia, individuals exhibit non-fluent, grammatically impaired speech, while Wernicke's aphasia is characterized by fluent but semantically meaningless speech. Conduction aphasia, a selective production deficit, highlights the role of the arcuate fasciculus in speech. The review also explores comprehension deficits, particularly in syntactic parsing, as seen in Broca’s aphasia. Recent neuroanatomical research has moved beyond the traditional Broca-Wernicke model, demonstrating the involvement of a broader network, including cortical and subcortical regions, in language processing. Assessment tools such as the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised (WAB-R) and the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) provide valuable insights into aphasia diagnosis and profile. The paper concludes by discussing modern therapeutic approaches like Constraint-Induced Language Therapy (CILT), Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT), and Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA), which target specific cognitive-linguistic impairments. This review contributes to the understanding of aphasia as a complex, multifaceted disorder, emphasizing its diagnosis, neural bases, and treatment strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and thoroughly describe the types of conversational maxim flouting carried out by Barack Obama during political interviews, based on Grice's four Cooperative Principle maxims: Quality, Quantity, Relevance, and Manner. The problem examined is how the utterances of a prominent politician disregard these maxims and what the pragmatic function realized through the resulting implicature is. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the utterance data were collected from two segments of Obama's interviews with Steve Inskeep on the NPR YouTube channel in June and December 2016. The findings identify a total of 17 utterances that flouted maxims, covering the Maxim of Quality (through statements containing uncertainty), the Maxim of Relevance (by shifting the focus of discussion), the Maxim of Quantity (by providing excessive information), and the Maxim of Manner (by using ambiguous or overly wordy language). This maxim flouting is concluded to be a deliberate pragmatic strategy (implicature) in political communication, utilized to control the public narrative, avoid controversy or criticism, and present complex views, which the implied meaning was proven to be well-understood by the interlocutor.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of stuttering speech disorders in an English speaker. The data source of this study is a YouTube video titled “The Power of a Stutter” by Sharon Steed, a person who experiences stuttering, published on the TEDx Talks  channel. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using listening and note-taking techniques to identify instances of stuttering in the speaker’s presentation. The results show that 124 instances of stuttering occurred within the 17 minutes and 33 seconds duration of the video. The analysis reveals that prolongation was the most dominant type of stuttering, occurring 40 times (32.3%). Repetition occurred 34 times (27.4%), while blocking occurred 33 times (26.6%). Mixed patterns were identified 17 times (13.7%). These findings indicate a relatively balanced distribution among the three primary types of stuttering observed in the speaker’s speech. This suggests that the stuttering disorder experienced by the speaker is complex and involves multiple forms of disfluency rather than a single dominant type, which is commonly associated with persistent stuttering in adults.

Abstract

Background: Translation Studies has expanded internationally through bibliometric, computational, and interdisciplinary developments, yet the publication trajectory of Translation Studies in Indonesia has not been mapped systematically. A bibliometric overview is therefore needed to identify the field’s thematic concentration, collaboration patterns, and publication visibility. Methodology: This study employed a bibliometric design using records retrieved from Scopus and selected Indonesian peer-reviewed journals published between 2014 and 2025. After eligibility filtering, 137 Indonesia-focused records and 7,113 international reference records were analyzed using Biblioshiny. Findings: Indonesian Translation Studies was dominated by humanistic, pedagogical, and culturally oriented themes, whereas corpus-based, computational, and machine-translation topics appeared less frequently. In contextual comparison with the international reference set, the Indonesian corpus showed slower thematic diversification and lower visibility of technology-oriented translation research. Conclusion: These findings indicate that Indonesian Translation Studies is growing, but its publication profile remains more concentrated in humanistic and pedagogical domains than in technology-oriented and corpus-based areas. This pattern matters because it influences how the field may engage with emerging methods, international collaboration, and wider scholarly visibility in contemporary Translation Studies. Originality: This study provides a bibliometric mapping of Indonesian Translation Studies based on peer-reviewed publication records and situates the national corpus in contextual comparison with an international reference set.

Abstract

The ongoing environmental crisis, characterized by an increasing frequency of hydro-meteorological disasters and massive land conversion in Gorontalo, indicates a fundamental failure of the development paradigm dominated by instrumental anthropocentrism. This ethic ontologically reduces nature to an object of exploitation, contradicting the principles of sustainability. This research aims to philosophically examine the ethical framework of Gorontalo’s indigenous wisdom as an alternative for ecological disaster mitigation and to reconstruct an ethical relationship between humans and forests. Using a qualitative method with a critical philosophical analysis approach and a comparative literature study against empirical disaster data in Gorontalo, it was found that Gorontalo’s Indigenous Environmental Philosophy is based on Theocentrism as encapsulated in the Adati Hula-hula'a To Sara'a philosophy. This concept positions humans as Khalifah (trustees) who are obligated to maintain mizan (ecological balance), rejecting the claims of absolute ownership central to Anthropocentrism. . Indigenous wisdom, such as the Molapo tradition and the Payu Limo lo Lipu principle, functionally represent a form of Practical Ecocentrism that provides moral boundaries (an ethic of self-restraint) and customary spatial regulation. The failure of disaster mitigation in Gorontalo stems from ethical decadence and the abandonment of customary authority for short-term economic interests. Therefore, this study recommends the philosophical reconstruction of regional policies by integrating the Indigenous Theocentric Ethic as the ontological basis for regulation. Revitalization of customary authority to enforce Molapo is necessary to restore the integrity of the upstream ecosystem and achieve sustainable, culturally-based disaster mitigation.

Abstract

This study examines how visual signs represented through characters construct meaning in the film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research applies semiotic theories by Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes to analyze the relationship between signifier and signified, as well as the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. The research data consist of visual signs that appear in the film, particularly those related to the characters. Data collection techniques include intensive observation of the film, identification of visual signs, and documentation of relevant scenes. The study finds that visual signs in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil are polysemic and context-dependent. Maleficent’s wings shift from signifying autonomy to protection, while Aurora’s flower crown signifies peaceful leadership and sincerity of values across different power spaces. In contrast, Queen Ingrith’s white costume subverts conventional purity, instead signifying hidden threat, moral hypocrisy, and cruelty, naturalizing ideologies of power disguised as virtue. This study contributes to film semiotics and media studies by demonstrating that visual character elements function not only as aesthetic components but also as dynamic systems of meaning that convey cultural and ideological messages. The research emphasizes the significance of semiotic analysis in understanding how films construct meaning through visual representation.
