Abstract

Tea is one of the plantation commodities in Indonesia which has a production ranking in the top 10 in the world according to FAO data (2022). However, according to data from the Central Statistics Agency, tea exports in Indonesia have decreased in the last 10 years. PTPN VIII which produces tea has a broad global market, which has the 10 largest export destination countries. The decline in exports may show the need for good supply chain management with product standards and quality that can compete with other countries' products then, an effectively managed supply chain is needed. Difficulties that arise in agricultural supply chains such as perishability, seasonality, varying quality, and requiring a lot of space. This study focuses on supply chain risk at PTPN VIII Kebun Rancabali Sinumbra Unit as one of the units which position of the Sinumbra Unit in PTPN VIII Region III shows 9% and is in the eighth order of the nine existing plantations in Region III. The use of a fishbone diagram as a mapping for the risks obtained, then followed by the FMEA method to determine risk priorities and the AHP method as a tool for determining priorities in making decisions on mitigation actions. The results of this research are 18 risks in supply chain risk mapping using a fishbone diagram, then four supply chain variables are found, namely, plan, source, make, and delivery with a total of 10 risks that are the priority. Risks that are prioritized based on calculations using the FMEA method come from the plan variable, namely the work target for the production of raw materials is not implemented. All of these priority risks are then included in the AHP method for decision-making in alternative mitigation strategies, indicating the variable plan with the risk of processing work targets not being implemented is a priority in taking mitigation actions including periodic machine maintenance, increasing supervision of workers, and evaluation every six months for RKAPP.

Abstract

Vegetables are one of the horticultural commodities that have high economic value and opportunity in the market. However, vegetables supply chain in Indonesia is often identified with the traditional supply chain of long marketing chains, difficult market access for farmers, low competitiveness, farmers’ low income, and injustice to supply chain actors, especially between farmers and wholesalers. In creating a structured supply chain, value co-creation intervention applied to synergize farmers and wholesalers in Ciwidey Sub-district to understand each other’s problems then seek solutions to solve them. This research has been conducted in Ciwidey Sub-district, West Java. This research aims to measure the competitiveness and farmers income of each wholesaler’s group before and after value co-creation intervention. The result shows that variables competitiveness and income of Sari Hejo Farmer Group and Hidayah Alam Farmer Group have significant positive changed, while one of three indicator variable of competitiveness has not significantly changed.

Abstract

The development of a sustainable circular agri-food supply chain for rural producer organizations is essential to address the challenges of food loss, agricultural waste management, and resource efficiency. This study explores the integration of circular economy principles within the vegetable supply chain of rural producer organization, emphasizing the utilization of waste as a resource through technologies. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research analyzes the current state of waste management practices, quantifies losses across production and post-harvest stages, and identifies opportunities for improvement. The findings highlight significant inefficiencies in waste utilization, revealing that daily losses result in financial losses amounting to 4-10% of potential revenue. A sustainable circular supply chain model is employed to analyze and coordinate the interdependencies and decision-making processes among stakeholders, ensuring efficient resource allocation, effective waste management, and the integration of circular economy principles to achieve sustainability outcomes. By aligning production processes with circular economy principles, rural producer organizations can reduce environmental impacts, improve economic resilience, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the agri-food supply chain.

Abstract

Post-harvest losses remain a major challenge in the paprika supply chain, particularly in agricultural regions such as West Bandung Regency. Variations in supply chain governance practices across different types of suppliers are suspected to contribute to differing levels of post-harvest losses. This study aims to identify and estimate post-harvest losses in paprika under different supply chain management systems. A multi-case study approach was employed, focusing on three types of suppliers in West Bandung: farmer groups, cooperatives, and independent collectors. A qualitative method was used, with descriptive analysis of post-harvest loss estimations based on data collected through interviews and field observations. The results indicate that the highest total post-harvest loss occurred in farmer groups (3.55%), followed by cooperatives (1.82%), and the lowest in independent collectors (1.12%). These findings suggest that differences in supply chain governance significantly influence post-harvest loss levels. Losses are predominantly caused by technical issues such as improper harvesting methods, overproduction, prolonged storage, and damage during transportation. The implementation of contractual systems and strong relational ties between buyers and sellers facilitates more secure product off-take, thereby reducing losses. Meanwhile, the spot market serves as an alternative sales channel for downgraded paprika with declining quality.

Abstract

The loss of food and agricultural waste continues to pose challenges to sustainable agricultural development. The circular economy approach is believed to be able to address these challenges. However, the implementation of this approach requires the participation of all stakeholders in the supply chain, which must be coordinated through governance. Chili peppers are a high-value commodity that has the potential to generate income for farmers. This paper aims to understand how supply chain governance supports the implementation of a circular economy to minimize food loss and maximize the utilization of agricultural waste in chili pepper commodities. This study uses a mixed-method analysis, combining quantitative survey data and qualitative Focus Group Discussions (FGD). The chili pepper supply chain in Bogor Regency, West Java, Indonesia, is used as a case study. There are eight patterns in the chili pepper supply chain. The results show that 52.8% of food is lost along the traditional market-oriented chili pepper supply chain. In contrast, the food loss in the vegetable supply chain, which prioritizes modern markets (hotels and restaurants), is only 11%. This study finds that supply chain governance, including coordinated production planning, sales systems, price mechanisms, packaging systems, and low-quality product management, all contribute to reducing food loss based on circular economy principles. Regarding agricultural waste, the majority of chili pepper farmers (95%) do not manage their agricultural waste properly. Therefore, it is important to connect the supply and demand of agricultural waste and improve knowledge among farmers. This paper concludes that coordination and information exchange among supply chain actors are necessary to address the issues of food loss and agricultural waste.

Abstract

The demand for organic vegetables is continuously increasing to support healthy lifestyles that more people follow. Digital technology has facilitated this product marketing to serve a larger market, including agri-food marketing using social media that explicitly targets online communities. The growing participation in Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) as an  agricultural product direct selling initiative in Indonesia highlights the necessity to examine how customer experience, knowledge, and involvement stimulate electronic word-of-mouth (E-WOM) as a powerful promotion tool that consists of peer opinions and experiences aiming to foster sustainable consumer engagement and market expansion. This study aims to determine the effect of customer experience, product knowledge, and customer involvement on E-WoM on organic vegetable customers at an urban CSA in Bandung City that sells organic vegetables. The research employed a quantitative method with the Structural Equation Model – Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS). We sampled 60 respondents of the urban CSA customers. The results show that customer experience, product knowledge, and customer involvement significantly influence E-WoM. The research provides theoretical implications for consumer perceptions, engagement, and decision-making in shaping E-WoM impact, including practical implications on marketing organic products in online communities that support urban agricultural practices related to enhancing consumer trust, attracting new members, and promoting the sustainability of urban community-supported agriculture initiatives.
