Abstract

This study examines the transformation of the Aul myth—a part of the oral tradition of the Sundanese people—into two modern media: the book Manusia dan Gunung and the documentary film Aksatriya. The main objective is to explore how these media represent ecological values through transmedia strategies and culturally rooted narratives. This qualitative-descriptive research employs narrative analysis, close reading for the book, close viewing for the film, and documentation of oral traditions. The findings indicate that the book offers a reflective and symbolic narrative that fosters ecological awareness through literary depth. In contrast, the documentary film conveys the collective voice of the community by presenting testimonies, natural landscapes, and audiovisual aesthetics to reconstruct the meaning of Aul as a guardian of nature. Both mediums not only preserve local cultural heritage but also reinterpret myth to meet the challenges of contemporary environmental crises. The study concludes that transmediabased adaptation strategies can serve as inclusive and effective conservation narratives. These findings contribute to the development of culturally embedded ecological education and policies grounded in local wisdom.

Abstract

Balinese Hinduism provides a rich context for exploring the intersection of material culture and religious belief. This study aims to explore the dual roles of daluang (also known as walantaga) in Balinese Hindu rituals, functioning both as a ritual object and a sacred symbol. Utilizing ethnographic methods and textual analysis, the research draws from four Balinese Hindu lontar manuscripts, including Kakawin Ramayana, Wedana Pujastawa, Yajna Prakerti and Pujastawa Wedana. Data collection involved participant observation and interviews conducted with seven Hindu priests. Guided by Geertz’s interpretive framework, findings reveal that daluang serves not only as a material for crafting key ritual items but also as a vital medium for spiritual communication, embodying core cultural values and cosmological concepts within Balinese Hinduism. This study contributes to broader discussions on the role of material culture in sustaining intangible religious heritage and expression in contemporary Balinese society.

In the past, carakan used for various purposes in the archipelago written tradition, both for practical everyday purposes and meeting the needs of the administration of the local government; including testamentary with regard to the utilization of a wealth of indigenous peoples. Their testament manuscript text written using characters carakan, especially with the peculiarities in the form of letters generated by a playwright (idiograph), required a special technique to recognize the characters shape. The technique used is the technique of trace (tracing) directly above character by character so we get the script transliteration guidelines which refer directly to the text of the manuscript. Results from this study is (1) guide transliteration of three testamentary of Madrais S. Allibasa Manuscript; (2) certainty of the same authors on three testamentary manuscripts, namely Madrais S Allibasa, although there are only two manuscript text which states the name Madrais and an existing script text signature; and (3) certainty contents of a will stating that the lands of indigenous peoples should not be shared inheritance and sold, can only be used for the common.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the spiritual symbolism and ecological views in “Ngalaksa” mantram as an oral tradition of the Sundanese community in Rancakalong, Sumedang. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design and focused ethnographic analysis, this study examines the linguistic structure, symbolic meanings, and ecological functions of teks mantra used in various ritual stages such as “Jampé Nutu, Jampé Nginebkeun, Jampé Ngukus, and Jampé Ngibing.” The results show that each jampé functions as a prayer and a medium for spiritual communication as well as an ecological text containing environmental ethics and local wisdom values. Lexical elements such as menyan putih, talaga suci, bayu, bumi, and rasa reflect the ecological awareness of the Sundanese agrarian society who view nature as a living and sacred entity. “Ngalaksa” mantram also plays a role in maintaining cosmic balance, strengthening cultural identity, and becoming a medium for transmitting spiritual and ecological values across generations.

Abstract

This study addresses debates on manuscript authenticity in Indonesia, particularly materials preserved in museums and those circulating in public and antique markets, which often provoke controversy among non specialists. It examines the manuscript Kitab Suwasit Sasakala Prabu Siliwangi from the Prabu Siliwangi Museum in Sukabumi, also with several pseudo antique manuscripts from the antique trade. The study aims to apply Jean Mabillon’s diplomatic method to evaluate authenticity through analysis of material features and their contextual attributes, while contributing to Indonesian philological studies. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research employs classroom discussions, participatory observation, and digital manuscript documentation. Data were obtained through respondent participation in codicological analysis focusing on physical characteristics and material context. The findings demonstrate clear distinctions between authentic manuscripts and recently produced manuscripts made to appear old, which commonly display characteristics of modern reproduction. The study concludes that Mabillon’s diplomatic method effectively verifies authenticity claims. === Penelitian ini berangkat dari perdebatan mengenai keaslian naskah di Indonesia, baik yang tersimpan di museum maupun yang berada di masyarakat, yang kerap menimbulkan kontroversi akademik terutama di kalangan awam. Abstract

The study aims to elucidate the interdisciplinary perspective of folklore studies and arts-based research (ABR), focusing on the novelization of traditional stories to strengthen character education. An interdisciplinary perspective on language, literature, art, and education studies is employed to investigate how traditional folklore can be re-created through creative literary endeavors. Using an ABR qualitative research design, preceded by realist ethnographic research and in-depth character content analysis, this study explores the complexities of transforming oral traditions into written narratives, emphasizing the role of artistic interpretation in preserving cultural heritage and values. The steps of ABR are carried out through comparative data, literature review, and analysis of art practices of the selected traditional stories for their new adaptation. The results show that the folklore (legend) of Raden Alit has three variants. The variants teach about the values of religiousness, nationalism, independence, cooperation, and integrity. The variants of the Raden Alit folklore (legend) can be combined and transformed into a novel (didactic literature) through the six stages of the creative process of fiction-based research (FBR) design, which is part of arts-based research. The implications of this research are essential for socio-cultural in the contemporary context because it is relevant to the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage. By integrating insights from folklore studies, literary analysis, and artistic practice, this study contributes to an emerging interdisciplinary research field. It offers valuable insights into the transformative potential of arts-based approaches to preserving and disseminating traditional folklore.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop teaching materials based on the local folklore of the Serawai ethnic group in Seluma Regency that were feasible, practical, and effective for junior high school literature learning. The main problem addressed was the limited availability of literature teaching materials that integrated local cultural values, which resulted in low contextual relevance for students. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the Plomp development model, which consisted of preliminary investigation, prototype design, and evaluation stages. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, expert validation, and limited field trials conducted in junior high schools. The results indicated that the developed teaching materials based on the Nandai Genai folklore met feasibility criteria in terms of content accuracy, presentation, language use, and graphical design. Teacher and student responses showed highly positive perceptions of the materials’ usability and attractiveness. Furthermore, students’ understanding of literary concepts improved after the implementation of the developed materials. It was concluded that folklore-based teaching materials integrating Serawai local wisdom were appropriate to be used as alternative learning resources and contributed to enriching contextual and meaningful literature learning experiences for students.
