Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of propaganda and war ideology in the anime Spy x Family episodes 39–40. The research focuses on Loid Forger’s childhood, which reveals how war narratives, hostility toward the enemy, and militaristic values are constructed through media, family, social environment, and children’s play. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, which includes denotation, connotation, and myth. Jacques Ellul’s propaganda theory is also used to classify the forms of propaganda represented in the selected scenes. The findings show that war propaganda is represented through integration, vertical, horizontal, sociological, and political propaganda. Sociological propaganda appears as the most dominant form because war ideology operates subtly through daily habits, social language, peer pressure, and children’s games. These findings indicate that Spy x Family functions not only as entertainment, but also as a medium of social criticism against the normalization of war, the dehumanization of enemies, and the formation of military identity from an early age. This study emphasizes the importance of critical media literacy in interpreting ideological messages embedded in popular culture

Abstract

This study examines emotional management toward social validation through intrapersonal communication from a Stoic perspective among Generation Z in Tegal City. The study is motivated by individuals’ tendency to evaluate themselves based on recognition, appreciation, and social responses from their environment. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using purposive sampling involving 14 informants, consisting of main informants, key informants, and supporting informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings show that the lack of social validation in family relationships, friendships, work environments, and romantic relationships generates negative emotions such as disappointment, sadness, anger, feeling unappreciated, and feeling inadequate. These emotions are processed through intrapersonal communication, including sensation, perception, memory, and thinking. Stoic principles, such as the dichotomy of control, premeditatio malorum, amor fati, and inner discipline, help individuals reorganize their inner dialogue more rationally. This study concludes that intrapersonal communication and Stoicism can help Generation Z reduce dependence on external validation and build a more stable sense of self-worth.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of animism and spiritualism in Sintren Dance through the perspective of cultural communication. Sintren is a traditional Javanese dance performance rooted in mystical beliefs, particularly involving ancestral spirits and the spirit realm. The study aims to identify the role of Sintren Dance as a medium of cultural communication that conveys deeply embedded values of animism and spiritualism. A qualitative method with an ethnography of communication approach was employed. Data were gathered through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, including photos and video recordings. The research focuses on three communities in the northern coastal region of Central Java: Paguyuban Sintren Sekar Arum (Tegal), Paguyuban Sintren Satria Nada (Brebes), and Paguyuban Sintren Satria Budaya (Pemalang). Findings reveal that Sintren functions as a symbolic channel of communication involving sacred objects (incense, chicken cages, black glasses, shawls, and flowers) that represent animism. Spiritualism is reflected in the ritual use of mantras and the belief in spirit possession, where the dancer enters a trance. The pawang acts as a spiritual intermediary, while the dalang manages the performance. The saweran tradition and audience interaction also reflect deep emotional and spiritual engagement. Ultimately, Sintren is more than entertainment—it is cultural heritage and spiritual expression that communicates ancestral values across generations.

Abstract

The phenomenon of social media has given birth to a new culture in social life, where digital public opinion often plays the role of moral controller. This study analyzes the representation of Indonesian social media and netizens in the film Budi Pekerti (2023) by Wregas Bhanuteja using Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis approach. This research aims to reveal how the ideology of social media and Indonesian netizens is represented in ethical films. The results of the study show that in the text dimension, films depict the distortion of meaning and public judgment in the digital space as a form of instant morality ideology. In the dimension of social cognition, it displays ideological awareness of netizens' culture that is reactive and loses empathy. Meanwhile, in the context dimension, it reflects the condition of Indonesian people who live in the hegemony of social media, where image is more important than humanity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the film Melukis Luka represents the psychological impact experienced by ethnic Chinese survivors of the May 1998 tragedy through Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach with documentation techniques and sign analysis consisting of signs, objects, and interpretants in the film's scenes. The results of the study indicate that the film Melukis Luka represents four main forms of psychological impact, namely post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), excessive anxiety, personality disorders, and difficulties in regulating emotions and behavior. These impacts are depicted through the traumatic experiences of the character Hanry such as nightmares, fear of crowds, withdrawal behavior, and wariness of strangers as a response to the loss of family during the riots. This study concludes that Melukis Luka functions not only as a medium of entertainment, but also as a space for historical reflection and social criticism of the long-term impact of the May 1998 tragedy that is still felt today. Thus, Melukis Luka presents a humanitarian narrative that invites the audience to not forget history and build empathy for survivors who continue to struggle to face their wounds.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of interpersonal communication as a conflict resolution strategy of the main character in the film Komang through Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. The method used is descriptive qualitative with scene analysis techniques to identify signs in the form of icons, indices, and symbols that appear in verbal and nonverbal interactions between characters. The results show that interpersonal communication in the film Komang develops through three main phases, namely relational closeness, peak conflict, and emotional reconciliation. In the initial phase, semiotic signs build closeness and trust as the foundation of the relationship, while in the conflict phase there is a shift in the meaning of communication marked by the dominance of emotions, silence, and interpersonal distance. The conflict resolution phase shows the restoration of interpersonal communication functions through acceptance, self-reflection, and emotional awareness, which are represented symbolically. This study confirms that interpersonal communication plays a strategic role in managing conflict not only through verbal utterances but also through nonverbal signs and visual symbols that gradually shape relational meaning.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has positioned online games as new spaces for virtual communication, particularly among university students. Roblox functions not only as an entertainment platform but also as a virtual social environment where interpersonal relationships are formed. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of virtual communication among students of Universitas Pancasakti Tegal on Roblox using the Social Penetration Theory approach. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews, virtual observation, and documentation. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, focusing on active students who regularly play Roblox and engage in in-game communication. The findings reveal that students’ virtual communication on Roblox develops gradually in accordance with the stages of Social Penetration Theory, namely orientation, exploratory affective exchange, affective exchange, and stable exchange. Initial interactions are functional and superficial through text chat, which later evolve into more personal communication via voice chat and external platforms as trust and comfort increase. However, not all interactions reach deeper stages due to inhibiting factors such as toxic behavior and privacy concerns. This study highlights Roblox as a virtual communication space that facilitates the formation of interpersonal relationships within the metaverse context.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of gender power relations in the film Dua Hati Biru using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic analysis within the framework of Sylvia Walby’s theory of patriarchy. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes selected scenes that depict wage labor, domestic labor, and workplace discrimination. The findings reveal that wage labor functions as the primary source of legitimacy and authority within family relations, regardless of gender, positioning economic control as the central axis of power. Domestic labor is portrayed as essential to family stability yet remains symbolically undervalued and naturalized as a moral obligation, particularly for women. Meanwhile, workplace discrimination is represented through implicit institutional norms that stigmatize women’s marital and maternal identities, compelling adaptation rather than structural change. Through icons, indexes, and symbols, the film constructs a subtle yet persistent patriarchal logic that normalizes gender inequality. This study concludes that Dua Hati Biru not only reflects social realities but also participates in reproducing patriarchal ideology by sustaining hierarchical distinctions between productive and reproductive labor within both domestic and professional spheres.
