Abstract

Elementary schools in disaster-prone regions play a crucial role in instilling disaster awareness and preparedness skills at an early age. This study aimed to develop the Guru Siaga Guidebook as an innovation to support the Satuan Pendidikan Aman Bencana (SPAB) program in Ngantang District, Malang Regency. Using a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), integrated with qualitative insights from interviews, observations, and user feedback, data were collected through surveys, interviews, observations, and expert validation. The analysis revealed that most schools lacked structured disaster preparedness procedures, contextual learning materials, and routine simulations. Teachers and students expressed the need for a practical, engaging, and context-specific guidebook. The developed product included modules on disaster introduction, mitigation, evacuation, and first aid, complemented by visuals and interactive activities. Validation by material and media experts rated the guidebook as feasible and relevant (Material S-CVI/Ave = 0.89; Media S-CVI/Ave = 0.86). Field trials involving nine teachers and 90 students showed increased teacher preparedness scores (from 62.3 ± 8.4 to 74.9 ± 7.2; Cohen’s d = 0.64) and improved student accuracy in evacuation steps (from 68% to 83%). Findings provide preliminary evidence that the guidebook supports disaster education and enhances preparedness indicators, aligning with national and international frameworks for safe schools. The guidebook introduces three distinctive features: localized hazard case studies, project-based evacuation drills with assessment rubrics, and child-friendly SOP flowcharts.

Abstract

Indonesia’s education reform through the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) emphasizes foundational skills in literacy and numeracy. However, primary schools often struggle to implement numeracy instruction aligned with AKM due to traditional teaching practices. This study investigates how project-based learning (PjBL) can support AKM implementation by enhancing numeracy skills in real-life contexts. This qualitative case study was conducted at SD Muhammadiyah 3 Kota Malang, selected for its innovative pedagogical practices. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with school leaders and teachers, and document analysis of lesson plans and school reports. Thematic analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, supported by triangulation and member checking to ensure data credibility. The implementation of PjBL in mathematics instruction increased student engagement and improved numeracy competencies, particularly in interpreting data, solving contextual problems, and performing basic calculations. A 15% increase in AKM-related numeracy scores was recorded in the school’s 2023–2024 education quality report. Key themes identified include real-world contextualization, collaborative teacher planning, parental involvement, and student confidence development. PjBL offers a viable approach to integrating AKM in primary education by connecting mathematical concepts with authentic, everyday experiences. This study highlights the importance of whole-school collaboration, contextual instruction, and community engagement in strengthening students’ numeracy outcomes and readiness for competency-based assessments.

Abstract

Environmental degradation remains a pressing issue globally and in Indonesia. School-based programs such as the Adiwiyata Initiative aim to instill environmental awareness and sustainable behaviors among students from an early age. However, the extent to which such programs influence behavior beyond school settings remains underexplored. This qualitative case study examined the implementation and impact of the Adiwiyata Program at SD Negeri Lowokwaru 5 Malang, Indonesia. Data were collected from 24 participants—including students, teachers, parents, and school administrators—through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. Findings revealed that the program effectively enhanced students’ environmental awareness and behaviors within the school context. Activities such as composting, recycling, and project-based learning fostered ecological responsibility. School leadership and teacher involvement were key drivers of success. However, behavior change at home was less consistent, primarily due to limited environmental literacy among parents and uneven support from families. The study highlights the potential of participatory, school-based environmental education to shape pro-environmental behavior. However, long-term sustainability requires stronger integration with family and community contexts. Parental training and cross-sector collaboration are recommended to reinforce environmental values beyond the classroom. While the Adiwiyata Program positively impacted students’ environmental habits at school, its influence at home was limited. Bridging this gap through community engagement and parental involvement is essential for fostering enduring environmental awareness in children.

Abstract

This study examines the decision-making processes of senior high school students participating in the Student Study Group (SSG) tutoring program in Jember, Indonesia, with a particular focus on rural educational contexts. The study aims to examine students’ understanding of study program selection, identify influencing factors and challenges, and analyze the role of tutoring in supporting university choice. Employing a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, quantitative data were collected from 27 twelfth-grade students using structured questionnaires, followed by qualitative data from open-ended responses, interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis. The findings indicate that most students demonstrated a clear understanding of the importance of aligning personal interests and talents with their academic choices, reflecting relatively high levels of career decision self-efficacy and readiness for higher education. Internal factors, particularly interest, talent, and self-confidence, emerged as the strongest influences on decision-making, while external factors, such as parental support, peer encouragement, and guidance from schools and tutors, played reinforcing roles. Nevertheless, limited access to information on job prospects, difficulty differentiating similar study programs, and parental pressure were identified as major obstacles. The study highlights the significant contribution of the SSG tutoring program in providing both academic guidance and psychological support, enabling students to make more informed and confident decisions. These findings highlight the importance of integrating tutoring-based interventions into comprehensive educational and career guidance systems to promote equitable access to higher education in rural areas.

Abstract

This study examines the Sekolah Plus Ngaji (SPN) program as a distinctive school branding and promotion strategy in early childhood education (ECE) within rural Indonesia. Responding to increasing competition among ECE institutions, kindergartens are required to design programs that align with parental expectations and community values. This research employed a qualitative case study involving one principal, four teachers, and ten parents at Dharma Wanita Persatuan 1 Kindergarten in Waturejo, Ngantang District, Malang. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation of daily SPN activities, and document analysis of school records and promotional media, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles et al. through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the SPN program—which integrates Quranic recitation, memorization of daily prayers, and habituation of Islamic values into the formal kindergarten curriculum—functions not only as a religious education initiative but also as a strategic branding tool that differentiates the school from competitors. Parents consistently highlighted SPN as their primary reason for school selection, corresponding with a 20–30% increase in enrollment over the past two years. The study contributes to the literature on school marketing by showing how faith-based initiatives strengthen school identity, parental trust, and institutional sustainability in resource-limited rural contexts, and it offers a replicable model for other ECE institutions seeking to balance academic, moral, and religious education.

Abstract

Project-based TEFA at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Kepanjen was running and industry-synchronous, yet cross-subject integration (general ↔ vocational) had not been implemented and evaluation documents were inconsistent (~10% incomplete). This development study produced a Teaching Factory (TEFA) learning guidebook that integrates general and vocational subjects in the Motorcycle Engineering concentration using ADDIE (analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation). Participants in a limited implementation comprised 4 expertise teachers, 3 general-subject teachers, 4 vocational-subject teachers, 10 Grade-XI students, 2 industry representatives, the principal, and the vice principal for curriculum (N=25). Instruments included design/material expert checklists and stakeholder feasibility/usability questionnaires (Likert 1–5) plus observation, interview, and documentation guides. Scale anchors, item counts, and example items are specified in Methods; internal consistency (Cronbach’s α/ω) and inter-rater agreement for expert validations are reported in Results. Feasibility was high (expert means ≈4.6/5) and stakeholder ratings averaged 88–94% across ease of use, relevance, completeness/integration, clarity, and practical applicability. Key improvements include integrated performance assessment (multi-rater, role-inclusive), richer cross-subject cases, and documentation consistency. Findings are feasibility-oriented and do not claim effectiveness; future work should test outcomes and employability impacts via quasi-experimental designs.
