Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study analyses the use of illocutionary speech acts by pragmatic analysis, especially expressive speech acts, used in 5 selected Samsung advertisements found in YouTube, in which the brands tried to mock or make fun of Apple, its competitor. In its relation to the study of language, advertisements are known employ the functions of language to conduct communication between the sellers or brand producents and the customers, include providing informative and persuasive contents to the customers, in which the brand conveys some message and persuade the consumers to make them buy the products. Just like other kinds of communications, speech acts are employed in advertisements. In comparative advertisements, the brands compare their features to other brands’ to give the audience insight that their products are better than their competitors, and this kind of advertisement is the focus of this study, taking the example of Samsung advertisements with comparing their products to Apple’s. Author used the classification of Searle (1979) in identifying the kind of illocutionary acts in each advertisement. Focusing on the use of expressive illocutionary acts, this study found that not all selected advertisements contain its implementation. From all five selected advertisements, only three advertisements utilize expressive illocutionary speech acts. Expressive illocutionary speech acts found in this study are criticizing, apologizing, boasting, and greeting. This study would be helpful for further research reference and additional insight in learning and discussing expressive speech acts in communication.

Abstract

The massive use of the internet in Indonesia is followed by the use of social media. This gave birth to a new phenomenon among its users, the creativity of making memes. Memes in the form of images or videos are defined as ideas, behaviors or styles that spread from one person to another through social media which become a vehicle for entertainment due to their funny and parodic nature. Humor in memes can occur because speakers are flouting Grice's Cooperative Principle. This study aims to describe how the flouting maxim in PunHubOnline memes and how the strategy used to produce implicature. The results show that these funny memes are generated by flouting Grice's maxim where exaggeration or under-statement is often created through the implicature of flouting the maxim. Flouting of Quantity maxims often occurs because the information provided contains more and less, while in flouting of quality maxims it often occurs due to several strategies namely hyperbole, metaphor, Irony and Banter. Flouting of relevance maxims also occurs when the conversation in the meme contains irrelevant conversations between speakers and speech partners. In addition, flouting maxim of manner often occurs due to being obscure in the conversation in the meme.

Abstract

In the field of pragmatics, speech act analysis is fundamental to knowing the intended meaning behind a speaker's utterance. The objectives of this particular study encompass elucidating the manifestation of assertive speech, direct and indirect assertive speech acts, and the utilization of Asian Politeness by Meilin Lee in the acclaimed film Turning Red. Methodologically, this study adopted a qualitative approach with pragmatics study. The findings illuminated that there were 71 instances of utterances indicative of speech acts. Furthermore, the primary character exhibited a predilection towards employing assertive speech acts to articulate her beliefs and viewpoints, thereby expressing and elucidating various concepts in her utterances. Mei predominantly employed direct speech in her interactions with friends. However, in certain scenarios, she resorted to indirect speech when declining her friends' invitations. Moreover, she employed indirect speech to mask her emotions. In an effort to safeguard her mother’s feelings and conceal actions that perturbed her, Mei frequently resorted to fabrications
