Abstract

Enhancing Students' Speaking Abilities through Paired Storytelling Strategies. This study examined how using storytelling as a teaching strategy affected students' ability to communicate more clearly. The participants included thirty students from SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta, chosen through purposive sampling and split into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received storytelling instruction over four consecutive sessions, while the control group did not. Both groups were assessed on their speaking skills before and after the intervention. Results showed that the experimental group's post-test mean score was 96.0, compared to a pre-test mean score of 72.0. Specifically, the control group's mean post-test score was 64.0, an increase from the pre-test score of 60.0. The oral proficiency scores from each indicator demonstrated that students in the experimental group improved after being taught using paired storytelling, while the control group's scores did not improve. A one-group t-test demonstrated that post-test scores were significantly higher than pre-test scores for both groups, with t-values of -34.708 for the control group and -6.433 for the experimental group, both significant at the 0.000 level, well below the 0.05 threshold. These findings suggest that implementing storytelling in EFL classes can effectively improve students' speaking skills. Keywords: speaking skill, storytelling, improvement.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i2.202473

Abstract

This study aims to enhance students' writing skills through collaborative writing at a Senior High School and determine their preference between collaborative writing in pairs or groups. The study discovered that students lacked enthusiasm in completing the writing work, which caused poor motivation and challenges in formulating ideas. This study employed a classroom action research (CAR) methodology and consisted of two cycles. The data were collected through observations of the teaching and learning process, interviews with students, and conducting writing assessments. The research findings indicated that engaging in collaborative writing increased students' interest in writing activities due to the opportunity for interaction with their peers. Collaborative writing facilitated the creation of ideas by allowing each group member to contribute, resulting in a diverse range of thoughts. The successful implementation of collaborative writing was complemented by the implementation of group work. It was also shown that students prefer collaborating more in group tasks than working in pairs. The researcher discovered an enhancement in the students' writing scores.

Abstract

This case study portrays the implementation of the English extensive program in Central Language Improvement (CLI) of an Indonesian Islamic Institution, English teacher’s strategies, and students’ perceptions of the program. The data were collected from the principal, a CLI member, an English teacher, and three students who won English competitions through observations, interviews, and documents analysis. The data were analyzed qualitatively using the framework proposed by Miles et al. (2014). The study shows several main findings: (1) the CLI is run by students with the principal and English teachers’ support, (2) the CLI contributes to the students’ communicative skills development, and (3) the CLI implements a modern Islamic boarding school-based curriculum. The findings also reveal the strategies used by the teacher for improving the students’ speaking skills are presenting grammar and vocabulary materials, conducting communicative activities, learning outside the school, and using English consistently to foster students’ engagement, using code-switching and code-mixing. The students perceive the CLI program is beneficial to increase their English and support their learning. One challenge was also revealed, as the habit of using English in the program affected their proficiency in Bahasa. The study contributes to the body knowledge in foreign language learning

Abstract

The current study aims to investigates the effect of pre-service EFL teachers' awareness of promoting deeper learning on students’ 21st-century skills encouragement. This quantitative research uses a cross-sectional survey design. The participants were 366 pre-service EFL teachers from five universities in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The data were collected by distributing two questionnaires: the Deeper Learning Awareness, adapted from Jiang (2022) and Rodriguez and Fitzpatrick (2014), and the 21st-Century Skills questionnaires, adapted from Kelley et al. (2019). The pilot testing, expert judgement and SPPS analysis were used to assess the questionnaires’ validity, reliability, and practicality. The data were analyzed using Regression Analysis. The result reported that pre-service EFL teachers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta are aware of promoting deeper learning to support students’ 21st-century skills. Their deeper learning awareness also significantly predicted the promotion of 21st-century skills. The more pre-service EFL teachers are aware of promoting deeper learning, the more the 21st-century skills are implemented in the EFL learning.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the English speaking skills of students in class XI DPIB B at SMK Negeri 2 Malinau through the application of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. The background of this research is the low speaking ability of students, which is characterized by limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and low participation during English learning activities. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which was conducted in two cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 32 students of class XI DPIB B. Data were collected through speaking performance tests and observations of students’ learning behavior during the implementation of the PBL model. The collected data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ speaking skills, as indicated by the increase in the average score from 64.00 in the pre-test to 68.75 in cycle I and 76.00 in cycle II. Furthermore, the percentage of learning completeness increased from 25% in the pre-test to 81.25% at the end of cycle II. Observational data also revealed positive changes in students’ learning behavior, including higher participation, increased motivation, and greater confidence in speaking English. These findings demonstrate that the Problem-Based Learning model is effective in improving students’ English speaking skills and learning engagement.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate how Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) enhances the speaking skills of junior high school students in an Islamic boarding school context and how it enhances the quality of the teaching and learning process. Due to the dominance of teacher-centred instruction and limited student engagement in such contexts, this study proposes to apply a more interactive and student-centred approach. This study employed the Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, involving 29 male students in grade 7 over two cycles. Each cycle consists of four phases: plan, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, reflective teaching journal, and oral proficiency tests to earn both qualitative and quantitative data. The findings revealed significant enhancements in students’ speaking performance. The students’ mastery level increased from 31.03% (initial data) to 65.52% (cycle 1) and 93.10% (cycle 2). Students demonstrated enhanced fluency, vocabulary, and confidence, along with enhanced motivation and participation in communicative tasks. TBLT also helped reduce speaking anxiety and encouraged more meaningful language use inside and outside the classroom. Despite some challenges, such as limited access to technology and the need for additional scaffolding for certain students, this study demonstrated that TBLT is a viable approach to enhancing speaking skills in a boarding school context. The findings also suggest that TBLT helped to foster students’ communicative competence and enrich English language instruction in similar educational contexts. Recommendations are offered for sustaining TBLT implementation and for future research on long-term impacts and differentiated scaffolding.
