Abstract

Many temporal terms in human life are frequently misspelled, particularly on the internet. This study aims to investigate the extent to which these temporal terms have been incorrectly written. The methodology involves querying the largest Indonesian digital corpus with specific queries based on commonly misspelled temporal terms in daily usage. This corpus-based analysis is intended to ensure empirical and measurable data. The study's findings indicate that errors in writing these temporal terms can be classified into spelling errors, capitalization errors, and spacing errors. Upon classification and quantification, it was found that the majority of these errors are associated with religious terms, such as Ramadan and zuhur, which are often written incorrectly. Errors were also found in the use of the preposition di replacing pada for indicating time and the use of jam instead of pukul. This study emphasizes the need for evaluation in language education and outreach to improve public understanding of standard spelling

Abstract

This corpus-based study investigates the influence of English in scientific articles produced within Indonesian language and literature education programs. Although Bahasa Indonesia functions as the official medium of academic instruction and publication in this context, English continues to play a significant role in shaping the linguistic landscape of scholarly writing. The research aims to identify and classify the types of English influence present in academic texts written in Indonesian, highlighting their frequency and function. Data were drawn from six randomly selected scientific articles and analyzed using AntConc software. The analysis revealed a total of 1,152 English-influenced lexical items across 27,349 tokens, comprising 271 distinct forms. These forms were categorized into six types of influence: adaptation, borrowing, calque (literal translation), neologism, translation, and retention (words kept in English and italicized). Among these, adaptation was the most prevalent type, accounting for 78.23% of all English-influenced items, followed by borrowing and calque. While neologisms and retained English terms occurred less frequently, they still illustrate authors’ engagement with global academic discourse. The findings demonstrate that English significantly influences the lexis of scientific writing in Indonesian, particularly in areas where localized terminology may still be lacking. These results suggest a need for further policy development concerning terminology standardization and language use in academic contexts. This study contributes to ongoing discussions about language contact, bilingual academic writing, and the role of English in non-English-medium higher education systems, especially in linguistically diverse settings such as Indonesia.

Abstract

Despite the growing recognition of corpus in language teaching and learning, the importance of teaching materials informed by corpus investigation has not been widely acknowledged, especially in the EFL context. In teaching grammar, it is essential to provide authentic materials for the learners indicating both grammaticality and appropriateness. This study investigates students’ perceptions of the use of corpus-informed grammar materials and the strengths and drawbacks of these materials. The participants were 40 Basic Structure students at their first-year university level. The data were collected using questionnaires and interviews after the participants attended seven meetings with Real Grammar as the book used in the classroom. The data were then coded, categorized, and analyzed to describe how the students perceived the materials. The present study showed that most students have a positive attitude toward the corpus-informed grammar book since it enables them to know the appropriate context of use related to the register (spoken or written). Corpus-informed materials have several strengths, such as describing the register-specific and frequency information, improving language learning awareness, learning motivation, critical thinking, and many more. However, corpus-informed materials should not be the only thing to rely on, so lecturers or instructors should provide adequate explanations for the materials and corpus research. These results show that it is necessary to promote the use of corpus-informed materials in EFL classrooms, including grammar classes. However, the teachers should also be trained on how corpus works, and corpus-related terms and the use of corpus-informed materials should be reconsidered for the lower level of learners.
