Abstract

Increasing forest degradation and community poverty are painful. Meanwhile, the behaviors of forest resources and their stakeholders are poorly understood. Systems dynamics is an approach, which is able to capture the complexity, dynamics and uncertainty of the management of forest resources and to develop future scenarios. This approach is not sufficient, however, if it is not placed in the multi-stakeholder context, where each stakeholder plays an important role. This paper discusses the use of systems dynamic as a tool to facilitate multi-stakeholder process and social learning towards sustainable and equitable forest management. A case study was conducted at Darmaga Experimental Forest, Bogor using software ‘The Bridge’. ‘The Bridge’ facilitated the Darmaga Forest stakeholders to articulate their future vision, strategy and its indicators. Then, they were converted into a systems dynamic model where the future scenarios could be drawn and learned.

Abstract

System dynamic is an effort to understand complexity of social and eco-systems of forest. Through this system, a conscious learning on interaction between people and forest will take place in order to manage forest in more sustainable and equitable manners. A system dynamic modeling was carried out in area surrounding Lumut Mountain Forest, District of Pasir, and East Kalimantan. In the area, where legally was allocated to a logging company, live local people who depend on forest and rattan. The policy makers are trying to improve the well-being of local people without sacrifying the logging company. Aim of the study was to give policy options to policy makers and likely impacts of those options. The built model comprises biophysical, social, policy and impact main components. The model shows the change of impact indicators, which are standing stock, community income, and concession revenue and government income, given any selected policy option.

Abstract

Several methods can be applied in composite manufacturing, including the vacuum infusion and filament winding methods. In order to apply this method in the manufacture of composites, it is necessary to know which produces composites with a good target ratio of fiber and resin, namely 60%/40%. The aim of this research is to compare the manufacturing methods that produce the distribution of fibers and resins that are close to the target. The composites in this study used a carbon tow reinforcement material with a matrix, namely araldite LY5052 epoxy resin and aradur 5052 CH hardener. In composite manufacturing, there are three stages, namely molding preparation, process manufacturing, and demolding. Then SEM photo observations were made on the specimen pieces from the composite results with three different locations. Of the two methods, vacuum infusion produces SEM photos with denser fiber distribution than filament winding and voids produced in the filament winding manufacturing method. The volume fraction of the test on the vacuum infusion sample with an average yield of 56.79% and 54.01% for filament winding.

Abstract

Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI), an ex-situ conservation institution in Puncak, Bogor, has developed the 4A framework to attract more tourists and enhance visitor satisfaction and loyalty, while increasing visits revenue. It has also raised the carbon footprint of tourist transportation. This study aims to analyze the vehicle emissions of tourists and their satisfaction with 4A components to predict the likelihood of repeat visits and the subsequent rise in carbon emissions. Emissions were calculated using the IPCC 2006 Guidelines (Tier 2), and the relationship between tourist satisfaction and loyalty was assessed using the structural equation model partial least squares (SEM-PLS) method. The results indicated that CO2 emissions from tourist vehicles during holidays reached 1,482,261.96 g.CO2/h, significantly higher than the 552,732.81 g.CO2/h recorded on weekdays. The analysis also revealed that tourist satisfaction and loyalty towards the 4A components significantly positively impacted the intention to revisit, as demonstrated by the T-statistics of 5.437 and P-values of 0.000, where the more satisfied the tourists are, the more loyal they are to return to TSI. Keywords: carbon footprint, IPCC, loyalty, satisfaction, SEM-PLS

Abstract

This study developed a sustainable lower-limb prosthetic prototype using biodegradable ramie fiber-reinforced PLA composite as its primary material. The design specifically addresses the needs of individuals with limb amputation while prioritizing environmental sustainability. PLA-based composites for structural biomedical applications—particularly those in lower-limb prosthetics—must meet rigorous mechanical and fatigue performance requirements under repetitive loading. This study investigates the development of a transtibial prosthetic foot prototype using a quasi-isotropic lay-up prepreg ramie-PLA composite fabricated via the hot press method. Material characterization was conducted per ASTM standards, and the design was evaluated using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The prototype underwent static testing according to ISO 22675 with a user load criterion. The laminate exhibited an ultimate tensile strength of 48.36 ± 0.95 MPa, an elastic modulus of 4.125 ± 0.25 GPa, and a flexural strength of 62.06 ± 3.43 MPa. FEM results showed that all normal and shear stresses during heel strike (17.78 MPa and 1.71 MPa) and toe-off (12.38 MPa and 5.69 MPa) phases remained below fatigue limits. Experimental static stresses were heel strike (12.72 MPa) and toe-off (20.09 MPa), both within safe operational limits. These findings highlight the structural viability and environmental sustainability of ramie-PLA composites, positioning them as a promising material for next-generation prosthetic foot development.

Abstract

Coastal communities in the Banyuasin District heavily rely on mangrove ecosystem services. However, unsustainable livelihood practices are driving mangroves into degradation. Our study aims to identify alternative livelihoods that can transform more sustainable mangrove businesses and practices. This will be achieved by co-developing a business model through participatory action research (PAR) in mangrove villages of Banyuasin. Our study revealed potential community-driven edu-ecotourism businesses in Sungsang and Marga Sungsang Village for further development. This business heavily relies on the natural authenticity of its mangrove, which amplifies the urgency to restore the degraded mangrove in the landscape. Thus, there is a high alignment of the business model canvas components with restoration activities such as the development of a mangrove seedling nursery, selling, and planting. This community-driven business is financially viable, according to the financial metrics, with a net present value (NPV) of IDR 180,148,622, a benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of 1.3, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 52.88%, and a payback period (PBP) of 1.7 years. The development of this business model can leverage sustainable livelihood opportunities and reconcile multiple interests while amplifying the urgency of restoring mangroves. The collaborative efforts among the community during this process serve as an exercise to build collective knowledge, strengthen social ties, and enhance trust and communication. This, in turn, leads to stronger collective action and social capital, which can sustain mangrove restoration beyond the project duration.
