Abstract

Tourism website plays the important role to shape cultural perceptions and promoting destinations, to make language use a significant factor in influencing potential visitors. Despite extensive theoretical discussions on grammar's role in discourse. It remains a gap between linguistic theories and their practical application in the tourism industry, particularly in how grammar contributes to cultural representation. This gap matters because in tourism promotion, nuanced grammatical choices can change influence visitors' emotional connection, trust, and desire to experience a culture, ultimately affecting destination appeal and competitiveness. This study aims to bridge this gap by analyzing the grammatical strategies used by Indonesian travel websites to construct narratives about Bali's cultural identity. To combine the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and cultural semiotics as the analytical framework, the research focused on the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions of language to uncover how deeper cultural meanings are encoded. The data collected from popular Indonesian travel websites, targeting content on cultural landmarks, traditional performances, and local customs in Bali. Textual excerpts were manually extracted and systematically organized for analysis. The findings showed that the websites mainly use descriptive language, personal pronouns, commands, and connecting words to portray Bali as a genuine, spiritual, and unique place to visit. Additionally, culturally specific terms and sensory descriptions enrich the promotional narratives, enhancing reader engagement and positioning Bali as a culturally immersive experience. The research concluded that grammatical choices were instrumental not only in communication but also to shape cultural tourism narratives. By doing these strategies, the study contributes to both linguistic and tourism discourse, offering practical insights into the effective use of grammar for cultural representation and promotional purposes.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of native language on the ability of young Indonesian learners to pronounce English short vowels. Focusing on kindergarten-level students in Badung, Bali, the research explores difficulties in producing English vowel sounds absent in the Indonesian vowel system. Through observation and analysis of students’ pronunciation recordings of consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, the findings reveal that vowel sounds such as /æ/, /ʌ/, and /ɒ/ are often substituted with more familiar vowels from the Indonesian language, such as /e/ and /o/. These mispronunciations are attributed to the limited vowel system of Indonesian, which consists of only five primary vowels. The results support the theory of first language (L1) interference, which posits that differences in phonological structures between the native and target languages pose challenges in language learning. This study highlights the importance of increased exposure to English pronunciation and phonetic practice to enhance learners' pronunciation skills.

Based on the assumption that conjunction takes an important rolein a text, it will be interested to discuss conjunction in an article. The discussion will be focusedon how the author contrasts the information or his opinion. The collected data in this writingwere qualitatively analyzed by using the theory of conjunction proposed by Halliday andHasan. Abstract

Conceptual Blending (CB) is a framework within Cognitive Linguistics to create meaning construction that determines brain cognitive functions upon reading hotel advertisements which the study aimed to illustrate and elaborate. The study utilized advancement theory of CB by applying intertextuality concept to create multiple meanings done from prior studies. The study also utilized qualitative method to analyze a poster from ANA Intercontinental Manza Beach Resort through applying non-participant observation, purposive sampling, and triangulation theory methods. To analyze the data, the concepts of data collection, data condensation, data display and data conclusion were used. The study found that the processes of composition, completion, and elaboration within blended space of CB built the meaning construction within human brain. Composition stage created arrays of features from composing features within input spaces that build up new concepts within completion stage. The completion stage then created new concepts based on cultural knowledge combining all the features composed within composition process and the meanings were broaden by elaboration stage which cleared out what the new concepts actually meant for. These processes created the emergent structure which carries novelty meanings from the analysis. In this stage, the meaning has been completely concluded from all the elaborated meaning happening on prior stages.

Abstract

Translation of tourism texts is essential to bridge intercultural communication and ensure accurate transfer of cultural values to international audiences. This study investigated category shifts and equivalence strategies in the English translation of the Museum Gedong Arca brochure, a bilingual tourism text published by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Center of Bali. A descriptive qualitative method was applied through document analysis, with note-taking and documentation techniques used to collect data. The analysis was based on Catford’s (1965) framework of category shifts and Nida’s (1964, 1969) framework of translation equivalence. Results revealed 14 category shifts and 11 equivalence cases, with structure and unit shifts being most frequent, and formal equivalence slightly dominating. These findings highlight the importance of grammatical adaptation while maintaining fidelity, offering insights for improving translations of cultural heritage materials.
