Abstract

This study examines the impacts of partnerships for sustainability certifications in coffee value chains on farm income in Lampung Province, Sumatra-Indonesia. We conducted farm-household surveys, interviewing 171 samples in West Lampung and Tanggamus Districts, consisting of 98 farmers joining partnership and 73 farmers not joining. A probit model is used to determine decisions to join the partnership; ordinary least square (OLS) is used to analyze the determinants of farm income; and Heckman selection-correction model is used to reduce the selection bias in partnership participation. We find some selection in partnerships for sustainability certifications, driven by the age and education of household head, land holding size of coffee farm and the proximity to rural cooperatives-KUBE. The partnership farmers earn higher farm income than those not joining, due to a higher proportion of productive family members. After employing the treatment-effect model, we find that the partnership for sustainability certifications raises farm income, mostly due to higher coffee yield and farm-gate prices. These results reveal the need for policies to support the establishment and encouragement of partnerships for sustainability certifications. The internal control system (ICS) initiated by coffee corporations in implementing the sustainability certifications have improved the trust level between smallholders and global corporations.

Abstract

This study examines the impacts of coffee agroforestry system and sustainability certification on farmers’ livelihood in Sumatra-Indonesia. The study applies farm-income analysis and quasi-experimental impact evaluations by interviewing 408 coffee farm-households in Lampung Province. Propensity score matching (PSM) adopted here compares some matching characteristics of adopters of coffee agroforestry system and sustainability certification and the control groups. The results show that both coffee agroforestry systems and sustainability certification have positive significant impacts in improving economic benefits and environmental benefits, although the magnitudes slightly differ. Future policy shall provide better alternatives for farmers’ land-use systems that could ensure a better livelihood.

Abstract

Achieving the economic efficiency of the oil palm business is largely determined by the scale of the cultivation of the oil palm farms. This study aimed to analyze the performance of smallholder palm oil farming and its supply chains. This research used survey method. The research location was at the community oil palm plantation center in Tulang Bawang Regency, in Penawartama District and Gedung Aji Baru. The sample of oil palm farmers amounted to 74 respondents of farmers and the trader agents who involved in the supply chain. Analysis of farm performance used indicators of productivity, prices, farm cost efficiency, and income. Business scale can be divided into three classifications, as high, medium, and low business scale. Analysis of different tests of productivity, income and business scale using Least Squares Differences (LSD). Supply chains analysis used the S-C-P (Structure, Conduct, and Performance) model analysis. The results showed that the performance of independent smallholders of oil palm farming differed in their level of productivity and income on the scale of farming land, between small, medium and large landholders. The optimum of oil palm land makes a very significant difference in the level of palm oil farmers’ income received by smallholders on a large scale of land. While not significantly different between the scale of a narrow and medium scale. Oil palm fruit bunches (fresh fruit bunches FFB) supply chains involve marketing institutions namely lapak and agents as an extension of the palm oil mill. The flow of the independent farmer in FFB trading system involved many intermediaries as a market institution, that is, from the farmer-stall agent-the company raises the risk of low prices at the farm level. The assessment of FFB marketing performance illustrates the condition of price uncertainty with a reflection of the high FFB price range at the farm level. This puts the marketing performance of FFB not in favor of independent oil palm farmers.

Abstract

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to analyze the financial feasibility of nutmeg farming and the feasibility of its cultivation aspects, technical aspects, and market aspects. This research uses a census method. Feasibility analysis is calculated by the ratio of revenue to cost (B/C), Payback Period (PP), Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), sensitivity analysis, and analysis the feasibility of cultivation aspects, technical aspects, and market aspects.  The results showed that at 15% of interest rate, the 25 years long of intensive cultivation of nutmeg farming in Gisting of Tanggamus Regency deserved Net B/C Ratio 2.23; NPV of Rp125,574,036; IRR 20.98% and PP 10.01.  The effect of changes with the likely costsrose by 10%, decreased the production by 25%, or it  decreased the output prices by 10%, but the farm was still in the state of intensive nutmeg feasible and profitable. On the cultivation aspects, the climate and rain fall in the district of Gisting Tanggamus was appropriated to nutmeg plants; on the technical aspects, the majority of farmers still used traditional technology, particularly in post harvest technology such as processing of nutmeg became essential oils or a variety of snacks. In fact, on the aspects of the market of nutmeg was very good, in which the demand side was greater than the supply side so that the market opportunity for this product was still very promising.
