Abstract

The critical thinking and social attitudes of elementary school students in Civic Education (CE) learning remain relatively low, indicating the need for an instructional approach that can simultaneously enhance both aspects. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the Value Clarification Techniques (VCT)-based Civic Education learning model on critical thinking skills and social attitudes of fifth-grade elementary school students. The research used a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent posttest-only control group design. The sample consisted of 61 students from two elementary schools in Buleleng Regency, selected using cluster random sampling of the intact group type, with 31 students in the experimental group and 30 in the control group. The instruments included a critical thinking test and a social attitude questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, assumption testing, and MANOVA. The results showed a significant effect of the VCT model on critical thinking (F = 15.72; p < 0.001) and social attitude (F = 11.64; p = 0.001). The experimental group's mean critical thinking score was 81.45, compared to 72.30 for the control group. Similarly, the mean social attitude score of the experimental group was 84.10, higher than the control group's 76.80. These findings indicate that the VCT model is effective in simultaneously fostering students' cognitive and affective development in Civic Education learning.

Abstract

The low levels of decision-making skills (DMS) and design thinking skills (DTS) among Industrial Design Engineering students in Bali hinder their readiness to meet industry demands. This problem is compounded by students’ low self-efficacy in making career decisions and their limited exposure to authentic, collaborative, and interdisciplinary training. This study aims to address these gaps by implementing and evaluating a transformative multicultural education model as an innovative strategy to enhance DMS and DTS. Employing an experimental research design, the study involved 64 vocational schools (SMK) across Bali, selected to represent diverse cultural and socio-economic contexts. Data were collected through validated structured questionnaires measuring DMS and DTS, followed by quantitative analysis using descriptive statistics and MANOVA. The findings reveal that the transformative multicultural learning model produced a statistically significant improvement in both skill domains, fostering not only technical creativity but also culturally responsive decision-making. The novelty of this research lies in its integration of multicultural perspectives directly into the design thinking framework—positioning cultural diversity as an active driver of creative problem-solving rather than a passive background element. Furthermore, the approach embeds real-world project simulations grounded in local cultural values, bridging the gap between academic preparation and industry expectations. This combination of cultural adaptation, critical thinking, and collaborative design creates a robust foundation for inclusive, future-ready learning environments. The results suggest that transformative multicultural education can serve as a scalable, culturally relevant model for preparing students to navigate complex, globalized work environments while retaining local identity.

Abstract

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 brings significant changes in human life with automation and access to information technology, which requires mastery of 4C skills: Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, Communication, and Collaboration. Critical thinking skills are very important in supporting problem solving and decision making, and are closely related to scientific literacy. However, PISA data shows that the scientific literacy of Indonesian students is still low, with an average score of 74.56 in science learning. To improve this quality, the Merdeka Curriculum is implemented with a focus on project-based learning (PjBL), but the results are not optimal. The STEM-based PjBL model, which integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, has proven effective in improving scientific literacy and critical thinking skills. This study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method with two cycles. The pre-cycle results showed an average value of scientific literacy of 73.28 and critical thinking of 72.14, below the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM). Cycle I with PjBL increased the average value to 79.42 for scientific literacy and 79.28 for critical thinking. In Cycle II, after improvements to the teaching modules and learning media, the average value increased further to 82.28 and 82, indicating the success of the implementation of STEM-based PjBL. This model encourages problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration, and prepares students with essential skills in the digital era.
