Abstract

Acrylic artificial teeth are still widely used in denture fabrication. Several brands marketed in Bandung claimed that their product has met the standard but all the brands do not give the mechanical properties data including hardness. The ADA specification standard no. 15 requires a hardness of minimum 15.00 KHN for acrylic artificial teeth. This study is aimed to find out which acrylic artificial teeth have a standardized hardness value. The study is an analytic descriptive study performed on five brands of acrylic artificial teeth marketed in Bandung. The samples were given 10 indentation spots on the upper and lower surfaces. The results of the study were analysed using Anova test and Dunnet test. The analysis showed that the hardness value of the upper and lower surfaces was as followed, respec-tively: A, 17.95 KHN and 17.46 KHN; B, 17.01 KHN and 17.49 KHN; C, 18.24 KHN and 17.41 KHN; D 17.61 KHN and 17.01 KHN; E 17.01 KHN and 16.59 KHN. The two-ways Anova showed that the hardness value of both sur-faces does not differ significantly. It was concluded that the five brands have met ADA specification standard no. 15 and there were differences in hardness values among the brands.

Abstract

Bruxism is a condition that involves grinding and clenching which can place a large load on the mandible, so it can change the morphology of the mandible. Based on the Levandoski analysis, this study aimed to determine whether there are differences in the mandibular morphology between bruxism and non-bruxism patients. This study was a cross-sectional analytic study conducted on the panoramic radiographic samples of bruxism and non-bruxism patients with a total sample of 30 patients (n = 30) in each group, obtained from the radiographic archives at the Radiology Installation of RSGM Universitas Padjadjaran which have been confirmed as bruxism and non-bruxism patients. Measurements were carried out using ImageJ software based on the reference lines by Levandoski. The results of the study were analyzed using SPSS software by performing normality and homogeneity tests, followed by a statistically independent t-test or Mann-Whitney test. The results of the independent t-test showed that three lines had a p-value < 0.05, namely the line from the point gonion to the maxillary vertical line on the right side, the distance from the top point of the condyle to the maxillary interincisal point on the right side, and the distance from the top point of the condyle to the mandibular interincisal point on the right side. The Mann-Whitney test results showed that two lines had a p-value < 0.05, namely the maxillary vertical midline and the distance from the condyle to the left maxillary vertical line. The other line had a p-value> 0.05. There were differences in the mandibular morphology between bruxism and non-bruxism patients based on the Levandoski analysis, namely the length of the maxillary vertical midline, the distance from the condyle top point to the maxillary vertical midline, the distance from the point gonion to the maxillary vertical midline, the distance from the top point of the condyle to the maxillary interincisal point on the left side, and the distance from the top point of the condyle to the mandibular interincisal point on the left side. On the other four lines, there was no significant difference between bruxism and non-bruxism patients.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: Anterior implant placement is always challenging, especially when it is caused by trauma. Treatment preference is not only because of bone sufficiency but also aesthetic considerations. The complications aggravated by trauma and temporomandibular joint disorder need particular emphasis. The aim of this case report is to describe a new insight into dental implant treatment for trauma-induced edentulism and associated temporomandibular joint disorders. Case report: A 24-year-old woman had a motor vehicle accident. Her four anterior mandibular teeth were extracted through fractures. The patient also complained of clicking in both jaws during mouth opening. A bone graft and modification provisoris-stabilization splint were applied before definitive treatment. Furthermore, a 4-unit Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) implant-supported-fixed partial denture was done to replace the missing teeth. Conclusion: New insight into dental implant treatment for trauma-induced edentulism and associated temporomandibular joint disorders with replacement of several anterior mandibular missing teeth due to trauma with temporomandibular disorders could be treated with dental implant modification splint that functions as a temporary restoration as well, which was an alternative treatment option. The patient was satisfied with the result of the treatment, especially in the aesthetic aspect.KEYWORDSdental implant, trauma, temporomandibular joint disorders, splint

Abstract

Abstract

Dental caries is a common oral disease in children, influenced by environmental, psychological, behavioral, and biological factors. The American academy of pediatric dentistry recommends screening from the time the first tooth erupts or at one year of age to prevent caries, which mostly affects children from racial and ethnic minorities. In Indonesia, the 2023 health survey reported a caries prevalence of 84.8% in children aged 5-9 years. This research introduces early caries detection using three deep learning models: faster-RCNN, you only look once (YOLO) V8, and detection transformer (DETR), using Indonesian dental caries characteristic datasets (IDCCD) focused on Indonesian data with international caries detection and assessment system (ICDAS) classification D0 to D6. The results showed that YOLO V8-s and DETR gave good results, with mean average precision (mAP) of 41.8% and 41.3% for intersection over union (IoU) 50, and 24.3% and 26.2% for IoU 50:90. Precision-recall (PR) curves show that both models have high precision at low recall (0 to 0.2), but precision decreases sharply as recall increases. YOLO V8-s showed a slower and more regular decrease in precision, indicating a more stable performance compared to DETR.

Differences in facial proportions between bruxism and non bruxism patients: a cross sectional study Introduction: Bruxism is a parafunctional activity commonly associated with clenching, gnashing, and grinding of teeth, occurring both during wakefulness and sleep. Persistent bruxism can lead to a reduction in vertical dimension and an increase in mandibular bigonial width. This study aims to compare facial proportions of individuals with bruxism to those without. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 40 patients at RSGM Unpad, comprising 20 bruxism patients (16 females and 4 males) and 20 non-bruxism patients (16 females and 4 males). Data were collected by photographing the faces of both bruxism and non-bruxism patients at the Prosthodontics Department of RSGM Unpad. The photographs were analyzed using Photoshop and measured according to the horizontal thirds and vertical fifths methods. The statistical analysis performed in this study was a parametric test using the independent t-test. Results: Facial photo analysis revealed that bruxism was more prevalent among females. The lower third of the face in bruxism patients was significantly shorter, averaging 3.11 cm, compared to 3.52 cm in non-bruxism patients, a statistically significant difference. Conclusions: Photographic analysis revealed that the lower third of the face in bruxism patients is significantly shorter than in non-bruxism individuals

Abstract

Introduction: Among the most complex restorative challenges for a dentist is that related to determine the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD). Objective methods of determining the OVD offers significant advantages because no radiographs or other special measuring devices are required. Previous review said that the OVD is similar to the pupil-rima oris distance among the population of India. The purpose of this study was to compare whether there was differences between the OVD and the pupil-rima oris distance among Sundanese population. Method: This study was an analytical cross sectional approach. A total of fifty Sundanese students of Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Padjadjaran who have fulfilled all criteria were chosen randomly to be measured the OVD and the pupil-rima oris distance. Result: Results showed that there was no significant difference between the OVD and the pupil-rima oris distance (α=5%). There were strong correlations between the OVD and the pupil-rima oris distance (p<0.05). An analysed with Spearman’s rank correlation statistic (α=5%) reveals that there was a significant difference between males and females in the OVD and the pupil-rima oris distance. Conclusion: Based on the analysed data, we can conclude that there wass no significant difference between the OVD and the pupil-rima oris distance, thus, the pupil-rima oris distance can be suggested as an objective method to determine the length of OVD in Sundanese population.

Abstract

Introduction: Tooth restoration and implant-supported was one of the methods to overcome the free end cases. Abutment and implant are two components that are fused together by a screw. Therefore, the main problem to solve are loosened screw and implant or abutment fracture because of increasing unpredictable potential force on the implant, abutment, and screw. The purpose of this research was to describe the distribution stress between the connection of the body of implant and abutment on the submerged and non-submerged design of the implant supported bridge. Method: The submerged and non-submerged design implant have been analyzed using the Finite Element Method under lateral and vertical static load for 180 N. The numeric model for lower jaw posterior segmented bone was determined by computed tomography, and the load measurement was performed to observe the distribution at the connection between the body of implant and the abutment of the implant supported bridge submerge and non-submerged design. Results: At the lateral load, the distribution strength value was 1.562x107 Pa, whilst for the non-submerged was 9.63x107Pa. At the vertical load, the distribution strength value was 1.038x107 Pa, whilst for the non-submerged was 3.342x107Pa. At the load of 180 N towards the vertical and lateral on the supported implant bridge, the distribution strength value had a smaller scale compared to the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), which was 1040 MPa (1.04 x 109 Pa). Conclusion: Both of the design including the secondary component (abutment) was safe to used as the supporting implant bridge.
