Abstract

Disc displacement with reduction is one of the temporomandibular joint disorders which often occurred. Disc displacement can cause the changing of condyle position which can be evaluated by using radiograph. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT-3D) is a radiograph for viewing of the condyle with more accurate. The aim of this study was to determine the condyle position in disc displacement with reduction. Sample was 11 patients with disc displacement and 3 asymptomatic patients as control. A radiographic exposure was done with CBCT-3D and measurement of joint space in sagittal view was performed. Statistical analysis used T-test. The result of this study showed that there was significant difference (p<0,05) between disc displacement with reduction and asymptomatic patients. It can be concluded that there was different condyle position between disc displacement with reduction and asymptomatic patients. It means condyle position displacement caused sagittal joint space changed.

Abstract

Introduction: The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) has become the most widely used diagnostic protocol for research in temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The invalidity of RDC/ TMD in clinical application causes the revision of RDC/TMD to be the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorder (DC/TMD). The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in diagnosis of TMD between RDC/ TMD examination and DC/TMD Axis I on students of Faculty of Dentistry, Padjadjaran University. Method: The type of this research was comparative survey approach using clinical examinations and questionnaires. The sample was collected from 48 people using random sampling techniques. The diagnosis of TMD was obtained by filling in the symptom questionnaire and clinical examination based on RDC/TMD Axis I and DC/TMD Axis I, which is then entered into the RDC/TMD diagnosis algorithm and DC/TMD decision tree. Results: The results showed that from 48 samples there were 36 (75%) people with the same diagnosis of RDC/TMD and DC/TMD, and 12 (25%) people with different diagnoses between RDC/TMD and DC/TMD. Conclusions: Based on the results of the study, the diagnosis of TMD based on RDC/TMD were still categorized the same as the diagnosis based on DC/TMD.

Abstract

Introduction: Elder population with associated physical and neurological disorders requires special care that needs to be attended by dentists. Dentists have a significant role in geriatric oral health. This case report explains clinical strategies in maxillary full denture and root-supported mandibular overdenture of a Parkinson patient. Case report: An 87-year-old female patient with Parkinson’s disease (PD) was referred for replacement of completely edentulous maxilla and partially edentulous mandibula. Multiple short visits in the morning and manual manipulation were needed to overcome muscle discoordination problem. Individual trays, fast setting impression material, thermoplastic impression compound, pressure indicator paste, non-anatomical teeth with monoplane occlusion, and denture adhesive are required to enhance denture stability. Prostheses were fabricated with metal framework to avoid fracture and repeated repair. Discussion: Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia and postural instability. These symptoms are worsened by psychological factor such as anxiety and stress. Poor motoric coordination is the cause for their increased susceptibility to dental caries and periodontal diseases as found in this patient. Oral muscular movement is essential in fabricating denture with sufficient retention, stability, and comfort. Adverse effect of Parkinson’s disease medication is xerostomia, which was also found in this patient. This lack of saliva strongly affects denture retention and increased mucosa sensitivity, which in turn exacerbate symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Conclusion: Effective dentures will help in restoring function, esthetics, and psychological condition of the patient.

Abstract

Abstract

People with down syndrome have a different craniofacial structure compared to normal individuals. Commonly, down syndrome patients have abnormal ear morphology with smaller size, and lower ear position compared to that of normalsubjects. These patients also have smaller nose, shorter maxilla structure and facial height. Other disorders are anomalies in tooth shape, numbers and size. The ala-tragus line is one of the anatomical landmarks to determine the occlusal plane orientation. Abnormalities in the anatomical structure of people with down syndrome can affect the parallelism between the ala-tragus line and the occlusal plane. The purpose of this research was to determine the differences in parallelism between the ala-tragus line and the occlusal plane of people with down syndrome and normal individuals. The sample in this study were people with down syndrome and normal individuals. The sample was photographed using a digital camera with a fox plane attached to the oral cavity. Parallelism of the ala-tragus line and the occlusal plane was analyzed by tracing these photographs. Photo tracing was done using the Autocad 2013 software. The mean value of angle on people with down syndrome (5.852° ± 5.367°) was greater than that of normal individuals (2.169° ± 2.557°). Based on the research, it was concluded that the parallelism of the ala-tragus line to the occlusal plane in people with down syndrome was different from that in normal individuals. The ala-tragus inferior line in normal individuals was more parallel to the occlusal plane compared to that in people with down syndrome.

Abstract

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ)is a component of the stomatognati system that supports oral dental health whichtheir components are closely interconnected. Posture is a habit that often do not realize that could cause animbalance in the joints and muscles, which in turn causes pain. Inadequate body posture can occur on sleepposition, lying down, sitting, walking, and other daily activities. Most people are not aware of the dangers of thesehabits. Dentists are expected to shed some light on the habits of this particular posture errors, which if not promptlyremoved, it will cause interference with stomatognati systems, such as joint and muscle pain, headache and neck.Complaints due to bad habits can be reduced significantly by eliminating the habit. So it is with the wrong posturehabits. With improved posture and a series of exercises as well as the care, the health of TMJ can return to normalwith minimal costs. This paper will put forward any posture that can lead to disruption of TMJ.
