Abstract

This study explores the reception of science fiction fans toward the portrayal of sexual fantasy in the Alternative Universe (AU) narrative within the Indonesian film Dear David (2023). Using Stuart Hall’s reception analysis, the research aims to understand how audiences interpret the representation of adolescent sexuality, fantasy, and ethical boundaries in digital culture. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method with in-depth interviews involving ten informants identified as science fiction fans. Findings reveal two dominant audience positions negotiation and opposition. The negotiated position views sexual fantasy AU as creative spaces for self-expression, yet emphasizes the need for ethical awareness, privacy, and respect for cultural taboos surrounding sexuality. Conversely, the oppositional position rejects such depictions for their potential to normalize obsessive or inappropriate behavior, particularly when involving real identities without consent. The research also highlights that AU writing functions as an emotional outlet and a coping mechanism, especially among youth seeking freedom from social and familial pressures. However, the commodification of sexual content in AU communities raises further ethical concerns regarding consent, age restrictions, and digital literacy. This study concludes that while AU narratives offer imaginative freedom and psychological escapism, they must be accompanied by ethical sensitivity and media literacy to prevent misinterpretation or harmful normalization. It contributes to audience studies by contextualizing fan reception of sexual fantasy representation in Indonesian media and underscores the importance of family and education in guiding youth self-expression responsibly

Abstract

Volunteer communities in Indonesia are growing rapidly among young people, yet without binding contracts, their sustainability depends largely on how well they manage communication. This study examines the communication strategy implemented by Volunvibes, a youth-based volunteer community established in Surabaya in 2024, in building volunteer engagement. Using Hafied Cangara’s (2020) communication strategy framework, comprising communicator, message, channel, communicant, and effect, this qualitative descriptive study collected data through participant observation, in-depth interviews with seven informants, and documentation, analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). The findings show that Volunvibes builds communicator credibility through consistent, non-hierarchical engagement; delivers layered informative, persuasive, and educative messages anchored by the slogan “Saatnya Berbagi” (Time to Share); applies a multichannel approach that assigns WhatsApp to internal coordination, Instagram and TikTok to recruitment, and face-to-face interaction to emotional bonding: and adapts its approach to new and long-standing volunteers through personal, two-way engagement. This integrated strategy produces cognitive, affective, and conative effects that move volunteers from passive participation toward active, recurring, and team-level involvement, reflected in higher retention, stronger contribution, and a growing sense of belonging. The study concludes that Volunvibes communication strategy functions as the primary driver of volunteer engagement in the absence of formal incentives or structures, extending Cangara’s framework with an empirical account of how it operates as one integrated system in practice, and offering a practical model that other youth-based volunteer communities can adopt to strengthen member engagement.

Abstract

The virtual community in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile provides a platform for players to communicate and build social relationships. However, female players continue to experience gender stigma in the form of stereotypes, derogatory comments about their gaming abilities, and verbal harassment. These experiences encourage female players to develop resilience in order to remain active within the community. This study aims to examine how female players develop resilience in facing gender stigma in the PUBG Mobile virtual community. This study employed a qualitative approach using virtual ethnography. Female informants were selected through purposive sampling, consisting of players who had experienced gender stigma, had been actively playing PUBG Mobile for at least one year, and had achieved a minimum rank of Ace Dominator. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, virtual observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The analysis was guided by Buzzanell's Communication Theory of Resilience (CTR). The findings indicate that the informants experienced gender stigma in the form of assumptions that female players have lower gaming abilities, are a burden to the team, and are frequently subjected to derogatory comments and verbal harassment, particularly after their gender identity became known through voice chat. Despite these experiences, the informants demonstrated resilience through the five dimensions of the Communication Theory of Resilience, crafting normalcy, affirming identity anchors, maintaining and using communication networks, alternative logics, and foregrounding productive action while downplaying negative feelings. This study concludes that female players' resilience is developed through the process of confronting, enduring, adapting to, and recovering from gender stigma while remaining actively involved in the PUBG Mobile virtual community.

Abstract

Confessional podcasts increasingly position personal disclosure as a lens through which digital audiences interpret social issues, including the fatherless phenomenon. This study examines how audiences negotiate meaning in a viral Indonesian podcast episode linking father absence to a woman's standards in choosing a romantic partner, using Stuart Hall's Encoding-Decoding framework. Through qualitative reception analysis, in-depth interviews were conducted with five women informants in Surabaya with varied family backgrounds and marital histories. Contrary to psychological accounts that treat the fatherless condition as a relatively consistent predictor of compensatory partner-seeking, decoding positions were plural: one dominant reading with negotiated elements, three positions along the negotiated spectrum, and one fully oppositional reading. Notably, the informant most directly affected by physical father loss did not produce the most uncritical reading, while the informant whose father was present but whose own marriage had failed produced the most oppositional one. Reception position is thus shaped less by the fatherless condition itself than by the cumulative complexity of lived relational experience and critical media literacy, offering a communication-based account of how audiences actively negotiate, rather than passively absorb, media narratives about family and relationships.
