Abstract

ASEAN has three pillars of cooperation, namely the political and security pillar; economic pillar; and socio-cultural pillars. In the context of the socio-cultural pillar, the ASEAN region has an extraordinary diversity of manuscripts; has an extraordinary diversity of languages, scripts, culture and religious content. However, ASEAN also has its own challenges, such as conflict or extremism that could threaten the existence of manuscripts. One of the ASEAN regions that has armed conflict but has many Islamic manuscripts is Marawi, which has scientific relations with Indonesian ulama. The aim of this research is to see the transmission of knowledge from Marawi ulama in the Philippines with Indonesian ulama. The method used is a literature study approach. The research results show that the manuscripts in Marawi are connected to scholars in Indonesia. The research conclusion is the connection between Indonesia and the Philippines in the past, both scientific transmission and social, economic and religious interactions. Therefore, the Marawi catalog can be studied in more depth, both for academic purposes and for other studies.

Abstract

This article discusses historical construction of Baron Sakendher manuscripts in the collection of Yogayakarta Sonobudoyo Museum. Serat Baron Sakendher (SBS) was written in the main frame of Babad Tanah Jawi. Various stories frame SBS distinctively based on each manuscript. This study proposes to explain the position of SBS in the Javanese authority domain under the Colonial—which was increasingly entrenched. The study used historical philological research methods, namely by selecting manuscripts and tracing their historical backgrounds to discuss the contents. The results point out that there are six manuscripts containing SBS stories. Four are included in the big frame of Babad Tanah Jawi, one is in Babad Selahardi, and one is in Pakem Ringgit. None of the six was written as a single stand; they were always integrated with the monumental Javanese genealogical story and believed by the Javanese people. As a means of cultural arrangement, stories in SBS are incorporated in the midst of Javanese legendary figures or rulers with different secondary stories. Conquest and cultural approach through genealogy pedigree are crucial in babad (chronicle stories).

Abstract

This study aims to examine carita pantun performances in ritual contexts as observed in the Baduy community in Kanekes Village, Banten, on several occasions between 2021 and 2023. Carita pantun serves as traditional epics narrated in oral tradition performances accompanied by kacapi musical instruments. Historically, carita pantun was fully integrated into the ritual calendar and performed regularly in various regions in Tatar Sunda including West Java and Banten. Over time, it has been increasingly narrated for secular entertainment. This study explores carita pantun performances that retain a sacred function and remain deeply integrated into the life of the Baduy community. By identifying the distinctive characteristics and observing the roles of speakers and listeners, the analysis emphasizes the importance of the oral text being highly dependent on the context of the specific ritual. The analysis further enriches the understanding of the nature and structure of the carita pantun performances as a traditional ritual in West Java and Banten.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the process of negotiation of Javanese culture in receiving guests based on dynamics of relationship between Javanese figures and non-Javanese figures (Campa) in Serat Jatiswara. Serat Jatiswara is an eighteenth-century suluk work that explores Islamic teachings in the form of a Macapat song. This manuscript represents the life of the Javanese rural people and their traditional mindset. Javanese characters in the text exhibit a responsive and adaptive attitude towards the presence of Jatiswara, who is treated as a great guest. This study focused on ideological negotiations through the pattern of relationship between Jatiswara and Javanese figures. This is text analysis research by using Gramsci negotiation theory to elaborate dynamics of relationship between Javanese figures and non-Javanese figures. The results showed that Jatiswara, a traveler from Campa who sought out his younger brother and spread Islam, was positioned superior to the Javanese figures he visited. The main findings include: (1) the representation of respect for guests, (2) the domination-subordination relationship through the glorification of Jatiswara, and (3) the accommodating attitude of the Javanese people. These findings confirm that Serat Jatiswara reflects the Javanese cultural ideology, namely harmonization, through the strategy of character representation and social relations as a negotiation of Javanese identity.

Abstract

This article offers a reinterpretation of the Kutika manuscript from a Buginese ethnoecological perspective. Departing from a philological study of the Lontara’ Kutika text in the National Library of Indonesia (PNRI) collection (code VT 129), this research examines how Buginese communities articulate their interaction with nature through this manuscript. The Kutika text has generally been understood merely as a book of time calculation, yet its background is imbued with philosophical values that show how the Buginese talk to nature, read signs, and treat nature as an equal element rather than a mere object. Using the framework of human ecology, this study describes the ethnoecological concepts embedded in the Kutika text. Philosophically, human ecology is built upon an ontological view that does not separate humans from their environment. Humans see themselves as an integral part of an ecosystem, a living space with functional relationships between social and biophysical systems that cannot be separated. This view is in line with Buginese beliefs that every natural element has a spirit and exerts influence on human life. The research specifically aims to interpret the maritime traditions contained in the Kutika text from a human ecological perspective. More broadly, it contributes to scholarship by introducing local knowledge of the Bugis community, derived from centuries of observation and reflection, which remains applicable to contemporary discussions of human–environment relations.

Abstract

This study explores the resilience of the bakaua ritual in Minangkabau society, focusing on its capacity to endure amid modernization, Islamization, and heritage commodification pressures. While many indigenous rituals have been desacralized or abandoned, bakaua persists as an annual agricultural rite rooted in myth and collective belief. Employing ethnographic fieldwork in Nagari Sijunjung and structuralist analysis of ten foundational myths, this research uncovers the reciprocal relationship between myth and ritual as the key mechanism of persistence. The myths surrounding Syeh Muhsin, a historical cleric mythologized as a sacred figure, provide legitimacy and narrative continuity. In turn, ritual practice actualizes these myths through sacred relics, communal cooperation, and annual recitation, thus embedding them in collective memory. This dynamic interplay between narrative and practice reinforces social cohesion, religious legitimacy, and cultural identity. Findings highlight that Bakaua is not merely a ritual obligation but a cultural strategy for resilience, sustained by collective memory and consciousness. However, external challenges such as tourism-driven commodification and generational shifts pose risks to its sanctity. By linking structuralist insights with theories of collective memory and cultural resilience, this study contributes to broader debates on how rituals adapt and survive in contemporary societies. The research underscores the importance of local agency in heritage preservation, emphasizing that cultural sustainability requires balancing internal values with external pressures. Ultimately, Bakaua exemplifies how myth and ritual co-create resilience, offering a model for understanding intangible heritage persistence globally.
