Abstract

The resistance efforts made by women against men, form attitudes and behaviors that refer to efforts to fight and oppose stereotypes against women. It is common for these efforts to be carried out with careful strategists. This research revealed the existence of resistance to female stereotypes carried out in a different way, namely through the animated film Mulan (1998) directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook. The research used descriptive qualitative. Data collection in this study used montage technique and data analysis of Miles and Huberman model. The results of this study show various forms of stereotypes against women that refer to standardization. Stereotypes of women include beautifying themselves to get the right partner; behaving well to their partners and parents; having white skin like a delicate and pale lotus flower; having a small waist; being able to pour tea gracefully, calmly and humbly; being elegant; polite; gentle; not embarrassing; carrying out their duties calmly and respectfully; always thinking in their actions; being authoritative, to bring honour to their family. Mulan as an important character in this movie shows that she indirectly fights against female stereotypes. Keywords: resistance, female stereotypes, film, character, family

Abstract

Women are faced with various stereotypes of being second-class beings. The female must accept being a being who must be under the position of the male. However, in contrast to such stereotypes, literary works are able to show a deconstruction of the conditions and situations of women as empowered beings. This is illustrated through one of Indonesia's novels entitled Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori. Women are described as figures who have a role to be able to show their existence even though at that time there was political turmoil before 1998. One of the important things that deconstructs stereotypes is the existence of strong women who are able to heal male characters through their efforts. Women who are usually used as second sex in patriarchal confines seek to be undermined in the narrative of the novel. Based on this, the purpose of this study is to dismantle the existence of women in the time of turmoil before and after the reformation in the novel Laut Bercerita. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with the approach of Simon de Beauvoir existentialist feminism. The results of this study show that women managed to get out of the notion of second sex by showing existence in the public domain by getting a proper education and job in the public domain, being able to struggle to find their brother's character and her brother's colleague who were victims of student disappearance in 1998, being able to cure men due to kidnapping and torture in 1998, and the struggle to get information on the development of cases of losing older siblings  and his brother's partner in the period before 1998.

Abstract

Religious tolerance, which is now starting to fade, has grown since the past. The Śhiva and Buddhist religious coalition from the Singhasari era to Majapahit might represent its religious tolerance. Several temples, consisting of Jawi, Jago, Panataran and Jabung, seem to reflect the concept of Śhiva-Buddhist. Its Śhiva-Buddhist characteristics could be referred from the textual information, its architecture, and its relief. This study used the analytical method and a historical-archaeology approach. The descriptions of these elements were identified and analyzed to strengthen the opinion of the Śhiva-Buddhist coalition. This study found that the Śhiva-Buddhist concept, as reflected in the Jawi, Jago, Panataran and Jabung temples, emphasizes the phenomenon of the coalition of the two religions during the Singhasari-Majapahit period.

Abstract

The opposition between community members that gave rise to the conflict was recorded in the Babad Blambangan (BB), an East Javanese manuscript from the 19th century. The text narrated the causes of the succession of the kings in Blambangan and the conflict situations that accompanied the change of power for every king in Blambangan, from Prabu Tawangalun until Raden Tumenggung Pringgakusuma. The conflicts that are represented indicate the existence of ideas in the minds of the people of East Java about building and maintaining social relations between communities. In this regard, this research aims to understand the perspective of the East Java society towards the phenomenon of conflict in social relations as represented in BB. To find this perspective, qualitative methods were used. This research was also carried out using a multidisciplinary approach through language analysis and socio-cultural conflict approaches. With this approach, various phenomena are classified, identified, analyzed, and interpreted. Theories used to understand the conflict phenomenon are semantics preference and conflict situations. The results of this research show that the conflict in the BB is dominated by issues of power and retaliation. This results reflects the community's perspective on social relations in eastern Java at that time, namely that the existence of personal ambition for power was something that needed to be controlled. If this desire is left uncontrolled, it can damage social relations in society. The findings also strengthen and add to the ideas of previous research regarding the concept of harmony in Javanese society, especially in eastern Javanese society.

Abstract

The perfection of life in Javanese society is an achievement when the personal life and God have become one. The concept is usually found in literary works that have a mystical aspect, such as a song called Ingsun by Sujiwo Tejo. For connoisseurs of the song ingsun, the song has a meaning of divinity. This study aims to describe the aspects of perfection in life contained in the lyrics of the song. The study used a qualitative method with interpretive analysis from the perspective of Javanese belief. Based on the discussion kasampurnaning urip or perfection of life in the lyrics of the song Ingsun by Sujiwo Tejo is the ultimate goal of human life. This was achieved by always being aware of two important aspects, namely sangkan paraning dumadi and manunggaling Gusti servants. Manunggaling Kawula Gusti stage is done by restoring the awareness that the place of man to lean on is only to Gusti or God in him in the form of love and affection, namely God as Ar Rahman and Ar Rahkim. With these findings, it can be concluded that humans who have attained kasampurnaning urip always nurture their love for their fellow-creatures and God.

Abstract

The novel Dua Barista by Najhaty Sharma discusses equality in the background of Islamic boarding schools. As a caretaker of the Islamic boarding school, Najhaty Sharma makes her novel a da'wah medium to spread religious discourse, fiqh, kindness, fairness, and equality. As a tool of the author's da'wah, this novel provides an impressive perspective on living a polygamous life. This article examines the idea of equality in the novel Dua Barista. The method utilized in the research is novel-based literature, which is the object of research. The qualitative description method is used to look at data by its quotations in the text that show the idea of equality. The results of the study show that through narrative strategy, the author shows the partiality of the female protagonist in responding to body and reproductive matters and making monogamous marriage an option. This research has implications for the study of literature and gender through the literature of Islamic boarding schools depicting the character of beautiful, intelligent, brave, rebellious female characters and having a leadership spirit reflecting the idea of equality and resistance to the patriarchal culture in Islamic boarding schools. As a da'wah medium, literature can voice the idea of equality in Islamic boarding schools that are considered patriarchal

Abstract

Serat Centhini is one of the greatest literary works in New Javanese Literature, written around 1742 (Javanese Year) or 1814, containing a collection of various knowledge related to Javanese Culture. Serat Chentini’s greatness has been sought to be preserved to the present in the form of adaptations, both in the form of adaptations, both in the form of lyrical prose, novels and even into the 21st century, it has been translated into soap operas and television shows. Serat Centhini is considered a reference to the spirituality of Javanese society, namely Javanese Sufism. This article discusses the secularization of Serat Centhini in the process of transferring its vehicle to the musical performance art ‘Serat-serat Centhini’ by the Hip Hop music Group ‘Kill The DJ’ (2011) and the Dance ‘Centhini Gunung’ (2016) as a product of creative industry. Through this two adaptations, Serat Centhini is represented in the contemporary context that contains a tension between sexuality and spirituality. The research results show that there is a process of secularization of religious values in the transformation of the two texts over vehicles to support the creative industry context, so that things that refer to religious values appear profane.
