Abstract

Abstract

Film is one of the mass communication media that has a significant power in delivering messages to audiences. As a form of art and entertainment, film not only serves as a means of recreation but also as a tool for conveying values, ideologies, and social criticism to society. This study aims to analyze the representation of women's power in the film Jangan Salahkan Aku using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The analysis is conducted using the concept of lexia and Barthes' five reading codes, namely the hermeneutic, proairetic, symbolic, cultural, and semic codes. The findings indicate that women's power in this film is represented through narrative and visual elements that emphasize women's positions in power relations, both in domestic and social spheres. This study contributes to understanding how cinema constructs and reflects the representation of women's power through a complex system of signs.

Abstract

Air compressor on board MV. Tms Glory has a vital role in supporting the performance of the main drive engine. This study evaluates the air compressor maintenance system through direct surveys, interviews with personnel, and document reviews. The results show that the implementation of preventive care has succeeded in reducing the risk of operational disruption. Challenges such as lack of resources for planned care were identified. Recommendations include the use of advanced condition monitoring technology and increased personnel training to support proactive care. This approach is expected to increase the operational availability of ships and reduce maintenance costs in the long term.

Abstract

Anchoring is tying the ship to the bottom of the water so that the ship is not exposed to currents and wind. When anchoring anchors, there are often various kinds of problems stemming from internal and external factors. Internal factors themselves include problems with parts of the anchor that support anchor performance caused by lack of maintenance, especially on the anchor chain. This is what makes the author choose to raise the issue of the role of anchor chain maintenance. The research method used is qualitative descriptive by describing the role of maintaining a good and correct anchor chain. The data used is in the form of primary data obtained through field observations and interviews. Secondary data are obtained through documentation and literature studies. The results showed the need for anchor chain maintenance procedures to support the implementation of PMS on board, to create safe conditions when docking and support anchor work. The impact that will arise if you do not carry out the role of maintaining a good and correct anchor chain, namely corrosion, exhaustion of wildcat gears, influence on the anchor berthing process, the heavy up anchor process is disrupted and can hamper ship operations.

Abstract

For a ship to move smoothly from one port to another, it must be supported by various types of appropriate machinery. One of them is Central AC which functions to maintain the environmental temperature around the ship at an ideal temperature so that the crew remains comfortable in their daily activities while working and resting. Therefore, a ship needs to have a cooling machine to support the comfort of the entire crew. As well as the importance of carrying out regular maintenance and repairs on the cooling machines on board the ship. This research uses a qualitative research approach, data collection techniques using direct observation, interviews and documentation or library studies. The data is processed using triangulation, the data obtained tends to be qualitative data, the data analysis is inductive or qualitative, and the results of qualitative research are to understand meaning, understand uniqueness, construct phenomena and find hypotheses. The results of this research are: 1) Factors that cause damage to Central AC so that it cannot be used properly are due to Central AC components such as dirty condensers, disconnected electrical cables, and dirty dryers as well as other factors, namely lack of accuracy in carrying out maintenance and maintenance. Central AC repair; 2) The impact that occurs when the Central AC does not work properly is a decrease in the performance of the ship's crew due to the discomfort of high room temperatures; and 3) The way to overcome problems when repairing the Central AC on a ship is that the ship's crew is on time to check, clean, maintain and repair the Central AC regularly and correctly.

Abstract

This research explores the challenges faced by maritime vocational lecturers who balance studies with teaching responsibilities, specifically focusing on the integration of sustainability principles within maritime education, with a particular emphasis on transportation management. The study examines how lecturers, drawing from both academic research and practical teaching experience, incorporate sustainability practices such as green shipping and port decarbonization into curricula aimed at preparing students for the evolving demands of the maritime industry. Through qualitative interviews with maritime professionals, lecturers, and graduates, the research identifies critical factors for effective sustainability integration, including institutional support, time management, and faculty collaboration. The findings indicate that when lecturers are supported with adequate resources and flexibility, they can successfully balance dual roles and embed sustainability within their teaching practices. Furthermore, collaboration among faculty members emerged as a key strategy for enhancing the delivery of sustainability in transportation management curricula. The research highlights the need for institutions to adapt curricula and offer better support to lecturers, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the sustainability challenges in maritime transportation. This study contributes to the advancement of maritime education by reinforcing the importance of sustainability in transportation management and offering a framework for enhancing vocational training in the maritime sector.

Abstract

Background: In North Sulawesi, maritime vocational schools are central to producing skilled cadets for Indonesia’s shipping and port industries. However, a persistent gap exists between institutional training and the technical realities of naval engine operations onboard vessels, leading to underprepared graduates. Original Value of the Analysis: This study provides a regionally grounded contribution by integrating the perspectives of maritime professionals and educators in North Sulawesi. Unlike prior studies with broader or policy-level focus, this research highlights localized insights into improving training effectiveness through industry-based knowledge. Objectives: The research aimed to explore how the integration of veteran seafarers’ operational expertise and vocational lecturers’ instructional experience can enhance curriculum relevance, student competency, and practical learning outcomes in naval engine education. Methodology: Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study collected data through in-depth interviews and thematic analysis involving two retired maritime professionals and ten vocational lecturers, all with substantial sea-going and teaching experience. Results: Findings demonstrated strong agreement on the need for curriculum reform, increased hands-on practice, mentorship programs, and competency-based assessment aligned with engine room demands. The combination of professional and pedagogical insight proved critical in identifying reform strategies. Conclusions: This research offers a locally relevant framework for strengthening maritime vocational training in North Sulawesi, supporting policy and institutional changes toward industry-aligned, sustainable maritime education.
