Abstract

This paper aims at exploring the use of closing utterances in conversation in one of Indonesian television program. The results show that there are three types of strategies implemented close conversation and all of it is the part of positive face-saving strategies. These three strategies are: positive comment, excuse (reason), and the imperative to end strategy (imperative to end the conversation). Positive comments applied if the speakers actually enjoy the conversation, but he or she had to end it for some reasons. Excuse strategy is used to close the conversation by providing an alternative motivation or alternative explanations for the hearer which potentially exposed to the threat of the face. Lastly, imperative to end the conversation strategy applied by the use of imperative words/sentences to close the conversation, but the speaker still trying to save his/her partner’s face. In general, the positive face-saving strategies used by speakers to close the conversation also consider the feelings of the hearer, giving positive comments or express a reason why a conversation should end. Abstract

As essential knowledge tools, books appeal to a broad audience, including children, teenagers, and parents, with Bedtime Stories particularly captivating for children at night. This study examines the sociolinguistic characteristics of Bedtime Stories, emphasizing the variety of language styles used by authors to engage a child's imagination. Analyzing children's stories from online sources, focusing on five selected narratives, the researchers reveal a range of language styles - formal, informal, casual, and colloquial - with conversational style being the most prevalent. Additionally, this study identifies diverse language functions, including expressive, directive, referential, and phatic, with a significant emphasis on expressive functions. These insights extend our understanding of language use in bedtime stories and suggest directions for future research. Further studies should explore a broader and more varied sample, utilizing qualitative and quantitative methods, deepening our grasp of language styles in children's literature, particularly in the digital era. This exploration is crucial for comprehending how adaptable and diverse language styles can effectively engage children globally, fostering their cognitive and emotional development in our interconnected world.

Abstract

This research investigates the shooting incident involving Jayland Walker, an African American citizen, on June 27, 2022, resulting from a traffic violation in Akron, United States, and its subsequent coverage across major online media outlets such as CNN News, NBC News, and The Washington Post. Utilizing qualitative methods and drawing on Van Dijk's (1985) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model, the study focuses on analysing the ideologies embedded in ten online news stories from June 2022 to August 2022. The findings highlight a discernible trend in the representation of Jayland Walker by CNN News and The Washington Post, where he is predominantly portrayed as a victim, with the police depicted negatively through strategic use of lexical elements and metaphors, underscoring the influence of media ownership ideologies in shaping news content. In contrast, NBC News maintains a more neutral stance, attributed to frequent changes in ownership. The research contributes theoretically to CDA, providing a conceptual framework for students engaged in critical discourse analysis studies, and offers insights into the complexities of media representation in incidents involving discrimination and police violence.

Abstract

This study utilized Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), grounded in Van Dijks framework to investigate how online news articles from American and Indonesian outlets portrayed anti-vaccine views related to COVID-19. Through systematic online searches, the research examined the data through the lenses of macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. Eight articles were selected for this study: four from American sources and four from Indonesian sources. The selected articles were published during specific periods: February 2022 to February 2023 for the U.S., and January 2021 to January 2022 for Indonesia. These articles, ranging from 500 to 1500 words, focused on Anti-Vaccine COVID-19 topics. The findings revealed distinct thematic differences. The macrostructure analysis showed that American articles highlighted distrust in specific vaccines and opposition to mandates, fostering skepticism, while Indonesian articles examined a wider range of cultural, religious, and personal factors influencing vaccine hesitancy, including anti-vaccine sentiments among expatriates and athletes. The superstructure analysis indicated that American reports emphasized controversy, whereas Indonesian reports explored motivations more deeply. Additionally, linguistic choices in the microstructure influenced portrayals, with American articles using dysphemism and active voice to emphasize danger, while Indonesian articles employed strong language to convey diverse perspectives. Despite its emphasis on textual analysis, this study offered significant insights into the sophisticated discussions of anti-vaccine sentiments in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, as reflected in American and Indonesian online news.
