Abstract

This study explores critical discourse analysis in the context of the prolonged Israel-Palestine conflict. It examines the discourse of two prominent outlets with different geographic and cultural contexts, The Guardian and The Jakarta Post, during the May 2021 escalation. This qualitative study applies Van Dijk's (1984) three-dimensional framework, with adaptations from Van Leeuwen (2008), to analyze news articles at macro, super, and micro levels. The findings reveal that The Guardian emphasized humanitarian impacts and used euphemistic terms, while The Jakarta Post highlighted reactive actions and employed a more direct tone. At the superstructure level, differences in story organization and headline framing were evident, with The Guardian focusing on chronological sequencing and The Jakarta Post emphasizing Indonesia’s advocacy for Palestine. At the microstructure level, The Guardian framed Israel’s actions neutrally, while The Jakarta Post reflected a pro-Palestinian stance through dysphemistic lexical choices. Ideologically, The Guardian leaned toward a neutral stance, often legitimizing Israeli actions, whereas The Jakarta Post highlighted solidarity with Palestinian victims in alignment with Indonesia’s cultural and political context. These findings highlight geographic and cultural influences on media narratives. This study fosters deeper conflict analysis, enhancing critical discourse and offering insights into the ideological underpinnings of international media coverage.

Abstract

The lack of culturally relevant instructional materials for EFL learners, particularly in integrating linguistic competence with Islamic values, remains a critical challenge. This study addresses this issue by developing and validating the Speaking for Formal Interactions textbook, designed to enhance linguistic proficiency and ethical communication skills. Conducted within the English Language Education Department at AKM Islamic University (pseudonym), the research involved second-semester undergraduate students. Using the ADDIE model as a framework, data collection employed a mixed-methods approach, including semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and pre-tests and post-tests, with thematic analysis for qualitative data and statistical analysis for quantitative data. The findings revealed significant improvements in students’ speaking skills and confidence, with qualitative feedback emphasizing the textbook’s alignment with Islamic values such as adab (courtesy) and tabligh (clear communication). Expert reviewers commended the content’s scaffolding and cultural integration while recommending the inclusion of advanced digital tools for enhanced interactivity. This study extends the ADDIE framework to culturally responsive education, offering a replicable model for integrating linguistic, cultural, and ethical dimensions, with future iterations suggesting broader applications and digital enhancements to increase accessibility and engagement.

Abstract

The physical appearance, particularly beauty standards influenced by social constructs, significantly impacts a woman's self-esteem and employment opportunities. Regrettably, black women, particularly African-American women, often experience marginalization due to societal beauty standards, racial biases, and gender discrimination within patriarchal settings. In light of this, our research employs the miniseries "Self-Made" to delve into how the dialogue spoken by the characters in the miniseries reflects the experiences of black women in the workforce. We utilize a qualitative descriptive research method with a feminist stylistic discourse analysis approach, following Sara Mills' methodology. Employing both word, phrase, and sentence-level analysis along with discourse-level examination, our study reveals the negative and degrading portrayals of black women in terms of their physical appearance, profession, and their place as women of the Negro race. Nevertheless, we also unearth instances where black women workers are depicted positively, reflecting their courage and empowerment in confronting racial stereotypes and patriarchal power. Our research aims to enhance understanding of the issues faced by black women by examining how they are represented in relation to their intersectional identities. Moreover, it highlights the significance of tackling preconceptions and biases present in media depictions, pushing for a society that is more inclusive and fairer.

Abstract

Foreign language teaching is a medium to raise students’ inter-cultural understanding, awareness, and sensitivity important for establishing tolerant mindset in multi-ethnic community. However, the use of literary works in foreign language teaching, for example TESOL, which could elevate intercultural competence since they promote respect and appreciation, is almost unexplored. This paper examined to which extent the values of moderation are presented during the teaching of literature and explicated in the curriculum, as well as the course outline of literary courses in three participating Indonesian Islamic Universities. This case study research collected data through a semi-structured interview with three lecturers English Literature Department, Walian University (pseudonym) administered under Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs and were analysed through critical exploratory lens. The results demonstrate that lecturers face complex issues regarding the incorporation and promotion of moderation values during the teaching of literature. Yet, the curriculum, on the other hand, has not embedded those values but are manifested in the teaching and learning process from the selection of teaching materials or learning activities. The lecturers remain the main actors in uplifting the introduction of moderate attitude during the teaching of literature.

Abstract

This research investigates the shooting incident involving Jayland Walker, an African American citizen, on June 27, 2022, resulting from a traffic violation in Akron, United States, and its subsequent coverage across major online media outlets such as CNN News, NBC News, and The Washington Post. Utilizing qualitative methods and drawing on Van Dijk's (1985) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model, the study focuses on analysing the ideologies embedded in ten online news stories from June 2022 to August 2022. The findings highlight a discernible trend in the representation of Jayland Walker by CNN News and The Washington Post, where he is predominantly portrayed as a victim, with the police depicted negatively through strategic use of lexical elements and metaphors, underscoring the influence of media ownership ideologies in shaping news content. In contrast, NBC News maintains a more neutral stance, attributed to frequent changes in ownership. The research contributes theoretically to CDA, providing a conceptual framework for students engaged in critical discourse analysis studies, and offers insights into the complexities of media representation in incidents involving discrimination and police violence.

Abstract

The impact of globalization on higher education, understood as the increasing interconnectedness of academic systems, student mobility, and the circulation of knowledge across borders, has shaped students’ experiences of Studying Abroad (henceforth SA) and influenced their identity formation. This study explores the aspirations and challenges of the alumni of the student mobility program held by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA) called MORA Overseas Student Mobility Awards (MOSMA), focusing on how they navigate identity in diverse cultural and linguistic settings throughout their SA journeys. Utilizing a narrative inquiry approach with a qualitative orientation, the research draws on Darvin and Norton’s model of language, identity, and investment. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four Indonesian SA students from three Islamic universities in East Java, ensuring representation of diverse perspectives. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify their aspirations, struggles, and identity negotiations. Results indicate that SA supports the acquisition of cultural, social, and linguistic capital but requires negotiation of identities when facing insecurities related to language use and integration into foreign cultures. The interplay between language learning and identity formation is complex, often shaped by unequal power relations in these contexts. Upon return, the students also participated in additional identity negotiations as they reconciled the SA-transformed self with pre-SA roles, synthesizing global experiences not consistently valued in home settings.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to examine the different language styles used in social media captions, particularly those related to the conflict between Palestine and Israel. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis techniques, the study analyzes fifteen posts from various female Instagram accounts. Data collection involved accessing Instagram via smartphones, searching for relevant posts and hashtags, and capturing screenshots of posts with captions pertaining to the conflict. Martin Joos' (1976) theory on language styles was employed to categorize the data. The findings reveal four types of language styles: frozen style (23.8%), casual style (34.9%), formal style (12.7%), and intimate style (28.6%). The casual style emerged as the most prevalent, while the consultative style was absent, likely due to its common use in oral or direct conversations rather than written captions. This study highlights the predominance of casual language in social media discourse related to sensitive geopolitical issues. Abstract

The rise of online platforms like "𝕏" (formerly Twitter) has transformed political discourse, where netizens frequently use expressive speech acts to communicate emotions and opinions. This study examines how expressive speech acts are used in netizen comments responding to President Joe Biden's post about U.S. economic growth, focusing on emotional expressions that reflect public sentiment. Through the application of Searle's theory of speech acts and Austin's felicity conditions, the research analyzes 46 comments using content analysis. The findings show a predominant use of literal and direct speech acts to express negative emotions, particularly dissatisfaction with Biden's economic policies. Additionally, the presence of sarcasm and irony demonstrates the complexity of online discourse, where non-literal speech acts convey more nuanced forms of criticism. These insights emphasize the evolving role of digital communication in political engagement and suggest the need for further research on how speech acts shape public opinion.

Abstract

This research explores the use of code-mixing and code-switching in the YouTube collaboration video "Glitch in the Matrix" by Nessie Judge and Cinta Laura. The study aims to provide a comprehensive examination of these linguistic phenomena within the specific context of the video. Employing qualitative methods and a sociolinguistic approach, the research demonstrates that code-mixing and code-switching are natural occurrences among multilingual speakers. Data were collected through systematic observation, categorization, and analysis of the video content. Nessie Judge and Cinta Laura, both multilingual individuals, serve as the subjects of this study due to their frequent use of code-mixing and code-switching. The findings reveal numerous instances of code-mixing, including the integration of English words into Indonesian phrases and the introduction of English phrases into Indonesian discourse. The study also identified various types of code-mixing: inner code-mixing, outer code-mixing, and hybrid code-mixing. Regarding code-switching, language alternation was observed with specific reasons or purposes, classified based on the direction of the switch, either from English to Indonesian or from Indonesian to English. The analysis utilized the theoretical framework of Criper and Widdowson (1975), which provided a foundation for understanding the sociolinguistic dimensions of these phenomena.

Abstract

Translation frequently conveys information about culture, knowledge, and other social interactions. It is also considered from the perspective of intercultural communication access to developments in the humanities, sciences, and technologies. It is the fastest, most effective, and most efficient approach to transmitting knowledge and technology. Therefore, it is necessary to apply translation methodologies and techniques to ascertain the translator's translation ideology. The research method used in this research is the qualitative research design. This research took samples of the translation of mechanical engineering terms in Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Heat Transfer to look for techniques, methods, and ideologies used by translators to translate these terms from English into Indonesian. The data obtained were 175, with the discovery of 109 single translation techniques, 50 double translation techniques, and six triplet translation techniques. Three translation methods are applied: the literal translation method, the faithful translation method, and the semantic translation method. From the technical data and translation methods, the researcher concludes that the ideology applied by the translator is the ideology of foreignization.
