Abstract

Foreign language teaching is a medium to raise students’ inter-cultural understanding, awareness, and sensitivity important for establishing tolerant mindset in multi-ethnic community. However, the use of literary works in foreign language teaching, for example TESOL, which could elevate intercultural competence since they promote respect and appreciation, is almost unexplored. This paper examined to which extent the values of moderation are presented during the teaching of literature and explicated in the curriculum, as well as the course outline of literary courses in three participating Indonesian Islamic Universities. This case study research collected data through a semi-structured interview with three lecturers English Literature Department, Walian University (pseudonym) administered under Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs and were analysed through critical exploratory lens. The results demonstrate that lecturers face complex issues regarding the incorporation and promotion of moderation values during the teaching of literature. Yet, the curriculum, on the other hand, has not embedded those values but are manifested in the teaching and learning process from the selection of teaching materials or learning activities. The lecturers remain the main actors in uplifting the introduction of moderate attitude during the teaching of literature.

Abstract

This study explores the usage of commissive speech acts in the women-centric movies "Little Women" and "Enola Holmes." It employs Searle's classification of speech acts (1979), along with Hymes' social structure theory (2001) and Brown Levinson's politeness theory (1987). The analysis uncovers various types of commissive speech acts in movies set in the nineteenth century. Furthermore, it reveals that the employment of commissive speech acts and the politeness strategies employed by the characters are significantly influenced by the social structure of their respective societies. These findings contribute novel insights to the existing theories and extend the scope of sociopragmatics research, particularly in evaluating movies within academic settings. The study suggests conducting further research encompassing diverse cases, exploring other aspects of speech act studies, and engaging in comparative or cross-cultural analyses.

Abstract

This study analyzes an episode of the "Close the Door" podcast by Deddy Corbuzier, featuring comedian Komeng, with a focus on Grice's cooperative principle and Attardo's humor theory. The research aims to identify instances where conversational maxims—quantity, quality, relevance, and manner—are flouted to create humor. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study examines transcribed segments of the podcast episode. The findings reveal that the maxim of relevance was the most frequently flouted, appearing in 44.4% of cases, followed by the maxim of quantity at 33.3%. The maxims of quality and manner were each flouted in 11.1% of instances. These floutings often served to introduce humor through unexpected or exaggerated responses, engaging the audience and enhancing the podcast's entertainment value. This analysis contributes to the understanding of how conversational norms are strategically flouted in comedic contexts to generate humor. Further research is suggested to explore these aspects across different cultural and media settings, potentially incorporating quantitative methods to broaden the scope of analysis. This study provides insights into the linguistic strategies employed in digital media to engage audiences, highlighting the role of humor in communication.

Abstract

Phatic communication, a widespread yet often unnoticed language phenomenon, primarily serves to maintain social interactions rather than convey substantive information. This study investigated the use of phatic expressions among Indonesian and Australian students, examining how cultural backgrounds and social contexts influence their communication styles. Using a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) with both qualitative and quantitative methods, this research revealed significant differences between the two groups. Australian students frequently used phatic speech to initiate conversations, provided comfort, and expressed empathy, emphasizing respect and interpersonal connection. In contrast, Indonesian students tended to use phatic expressions to promote social harmony, engage in casual discourse, and offer interpersonal support, often focusing on group cohesion. Social variables, such as social status and distance, played a critical role in shaping the choice of phatic functions and forms, with both groups adapting their communication strategies based on these factors. The findings highlight the intricate relationship among culture, social dynamics, and language in phatic communication, offering a nuanced understanding that can enhance intercultural interactions, minimize misunderstandings, and improve communication effectiveness in multicultural settings. This research underscores the importance of considering cultural and social contexts when analyzing language use, contributing valuable insights for educators, linguists, and communication professionals aiming to foster more effective and harmonious interactions across diverse cultural landscapes.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of translanguaging among the multilingual members of the K-pop group WayV, focusing on their YouTube content, "The Summer Talk." Translanguaging, characterized by the seamless incorporation of multiple languages into a single interaction, is an emerging global cultural phenomenon in the K-pop industry. The main objective of this research is to systematically record and examine the forms and reasons for translanguaging observed among WayV members in their YouTube content. This study employs descriptive qualitative research and content analysis, using a documentary technique to collect and analyze WayV's YouTube videos. This approach allows for an authentic analysis of the group's language use, including linguistic preferences and communicative methods. The findings reveal that translanguaging accounts for 35% of the WayV video content, with 50% of its use dedicated to explaining certain topics. Referential speech is the most common, making up 49% of the videos. Future research should explore how fans perceive translanguaging and its influence on cultural identity development.

Abstract

This study explores critical discourse analysis in the context of the prolonged Israel-Palestine conflict. It examines the discourse of two prominent outlets with different geographic and cultural contexts, The Guardian and The Jakarta Post, during the May 2021 escalation. This qualitative study applies Van Dijk's (1984) three-dimensional framework, with adaptations from Van Leeuwen (2008), to analyze news articles at macro, super, and micro levels. The findings reveal that The Guardian emphasized humanitarian impacts and used euphemistic terms, while The Jakarta Post highlighted reactive actions and employed a more direct tone. At the superstructure level, differences in story organization and headline framing were evident, with The Guardian focusing on chronological sequencing and The Jakarta Post emphasizing Indonesia’s advocacy for Palestine. At the microstructure level, The Guardian framed Israel’s actions neutrally, while The Jakarta Post reflected a pro-Palestinian stance through dysphemistic lexical choices. Ideologically, The Guardian leaned toward a neutral stance, often legitimizing Israeli actions, whereas The Jakarta Post highlighted solidarity with Palestinian victims in alignment with Indonesia’s cultural and political context. These findings highlight geographic and cultural influences on media narratives. This study fosters deeper conflict analysis, enhancing critical discourse and offering insights into the ideological underpinnings of international media coverage.

Abstract

The Israel-Hamas conflict, claiming around 42,960 lives from October 2023 to September 2024, has received extensive international media attention with varying portrayals. While Western perspectives are widely examined, research on non-Western media remains limited. This study analyzes how Channel News Asia (CNA) in Southeast Asia and The National in the Middle East employ euphemism and dysphemism to frame public perceptions of the conflict. Using Allan and Burridge’s typologies, this qualitative research examines 20 news articles from each outlet between October 2023 and September 2024. Through coding and categorization, it explores how language not only reports events but also shapes national and international discourse. Results reveal a significant difference in rhetorical approach: CNA predominantly uses dysphemisms, particularly to delegitimize Hamas, positioning the group as a threat. to state and represent a very bad thing or condition. In contrast, The National employs more euphemisms to soften portrayals of Palestinian actions and emphasize humanitarian concerns, presenting Palestinians sympathetically and highlighting civilian impact. This strategy suggests alignment with pro-Palestinian narratives, aiming to evoke empathy from readers. This study contributes to media discourse analysis by examining non-Western framing of conflict, illustrating how euphemisms and dysphemisms act as ideological tools in shaping public opinion. Expanding the scope to include non-Western perspectives highlights the role of regional media in influencing global narratives on sensitive geopolitical issues. Future research could apply this framework to similar rhetorical strategies in other conflicts and contexts.

Abstract

The rise of online platforms like "????" (formerly Twitter) has transformed political discourse, where netizens frequently use expressive speech acts to communicate emotions and opinions. This study examines how expressive speech acts are used in netizen comments responding to President Joe Biden's post about U.S. economic growth, focusing on emotional expressions that reflect public sentiment. Through the application of Searle's theory of speech acts and Austin's felicity conditions, the research analyzes 46 comments using content analysis. The findings show a predominant use of literal and direct speech acts to express negative emotions, particularly dissatisfaction with Biden's economic policies. Additionally, the presence of sarcasm and irony demonstrates the complexity of online discourse, where non-literal speech acts convey more nuanced forms of criticism. These insights emphasize the evolving role of digital communication in political engagement and suggest the need for further research on how speech acts shape public opinion.
