Abstract

The current article attempts to investigate the motivation of language learning employed by students learning English as a foreign language but living in a state that uses English as a second language, Malaysia. The current research focused on the types of motivation by Gardner & Lambert, namely instrumental and integrative, the dominant types of instrumental and integrative, the differences between natural science and social science, and also what items of students' motivation most related to their language learning. The exploratory, descriptive quantitative method was applied in this study with the total subject (N=18) students of Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur (SIKL) at XII grade students of natural and social science class categorized into three levels: low, moderate, and high level. A close-ended questionnaire was used, which consisted of fourteen statements adopted from Dornyei's language learning motivation. The study result revealed that in SIKL, students were generally oriented toward instrumental rather than integrative motivation. Both natural and social classes showed that instrumental was more oriented by the students. Furthermore, the students present the motivation to learn English to prepare for a better career and future. Besides, most students present that they are motivated to provide a chance to travel to English countries. The study's findings have implications for the English teaching and learning process, especially for giving good learning materials, methods, and models suitable to their language learning motivation. Furthermore, motivated students tend to put more effort and consistency into their language-learning process, which leads to success.

Abstract

Elementary education in Indonesia has undergone significant reforms with the introduction of the K13 Curriculum and the Merdeka Curriculum. These changes aim to enhance the quality of education and equip students with 21st-century skills. This study seeks to analyze the differences in the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum and the K13 Curriculum through a systematic literature review. The research employed the SLR (Systematic Literature Review) method using Google Scholar as the primary database. The literature reviewed was limited to the period from 2019 to 2023, using a three-stage keyword search process. The first stage resulted in 3,340 documents with the keyword "K13 Curriculum." The second stage yielded 492 documents with the keywords "Merdeka Curriculum" and the addition of "AND" between these terms. In the third stage, adding the keyword "in elementary school" and the term "AND" between the earlier keywords narrowed the results to 225 documents. These documents were further filtered based on inclusion criteria, resulting in 7 articles for detailed analysis. The analysis revealed significant differences in focus and approach between the two curricula. The K13 Curriculum emphasizes the development of affective, cognitive, and psychomotor competencies through a scientific approach, while the Merdeka Curriculum prioritizes the Pancasila Student Profile through P5 (Project-Based Learning) and differentiated instruction. These changes pose challenges for educators, particularly regarding understanding and skill acquisition in implementing the curriculum.

Abstract

The low level of critical thinking skills among elementary school students has become a major challenge in meeting the demands of 21st-century competencies. This issue is exacerbated by the lack of learning models that actively engage students in solving real-world problems and making decisions based on analytical reasoning. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of implementing the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills at the elementary level. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted by collecting data from Google Scholar using specific keywords. The search yielded 12,900 documents, which were narrowed down to 249 articles, with 10 articles ultimately meeting the inclusion criteria for further analysis. The data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively to identify the main findings related to the application of PjBL in improving critical thinking. The results indicate that PjBL is effective in developing students’ abilities to analyze, evaluate, and solve problems logically and creatively. Additionally, this model enhances students’ social skills, collaboration, and communication. The findings suggest that PjBL should be more widely implemented in elementary education as an innovative learning strategy capable of fostering 21st-century skills in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

The Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model is a teaching method that focuses on solving real-life problems to enhance students’ engagement and understanding in the learning process. In elementary social studies learning, PBL is implemented to develop students’ critical thinking, analytical, and collaborative skills. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the PBL model in elementary social studies learning using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The SLR method was employed to collect and analyze relevant studies published between 2019 and 2024. From 101,000 articles identified, nine key studies were screened and analyzed in depth through the stages of identification, screening, eligibility, inclusion, and data synthesis. The findings reveal that implementing the PBL model in social studies learning significantly improves students’ conceptual understanding, motivation, learning outcomes, and critical thinking skills. Moreover, this model encourages active participation and helps students comprehend social studies concepts in more authentic contexts. The results imply the need for systematic integration of PBL in elementary social studies learning to foster active engagement and higher-order thinking skills. Teachers are encouraged to enhance their competence in designing contextual problem-based scenarios, while policymakers should support professional development related to innovative learning models such as PBL. Furthermore, this study provides a foundation for future research exploring the effectiveness of PBL in developing students’ 21st-century skills and social character.

Abstract

Study aims to analyze the role of social media in changes in slang language use among adolescents and young adults. Social media has become a primary space for interaction, enabling the rapid and widespread diffusion of new vocabulary. This research employed a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design. Quantitative data were collected through an online questionnaire involving 117 active social media users, while qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with selected respondents. The findings indicate that social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp play an important role in the emergence and dissemination of slang language. Higher intensity of social media use shows a tendency toward a positive relationship with increased slang usage. Qualitative findings reveal that slang is used as a means of self- expression, social bonding, and group identity formation. However, respondents also reported potential misunderstandings, particularly in communication with older individuals or in formal contexts. Therefore, the use of slang language needs to be adjusted according to communicative contexts to maintain effective and appropriate language use.
