Abstract

Aedes aegypti is a primer vector of dengue virus (DENV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV). The susceptibility of mosquitoes to DENV and CHIKV depends on their recognition receptor of pathogens. C-type lectins (CTLs) are an important mediator of virus infection in A. aegypti. This study aims to identify potential receptors and determine the binding affinity between ligand–receptor interaction, CTLs and virus envelopes (DENV-1, 2, 3, and 4 and CHIKV) interaction based on in silico analysis. Sample sequences were obtained from GenBank (NCBI), and 10 CTLs were acquired from VectorBase. Homology modeling based on a minimum standard of 20% was processed using the SWISS-MODEL server. Molecule interaction was visualized as tertiary protein structure in PyMol V1.7.4. Homology modeling revealed all 3D protein model scores to be at 20%. The highest homology modeling score of 98.72% is obtained for CHIKV envelope protein (KF925315.1). The CTL GenBank ID: AAEL014382-PA has the lowest score at −1407.20 kcal/mol. The predicted mechanism of DENV-1, 2, 3, and 4 co-infections with CHIKV-1 is through the binding of the viral envelope to the CTL. Interaction analysis showed that the viruses enter through an endocytic mechanism. The results of homology modeling and lowest interaction energy could serve as the basis for in vivo studies on virus co-infection in A. aegypti. This information illustrates that CTL receptors facilitate DENV and CHIKV co-infection in A. aegypti.

Abstract

Dinoderus minutus Fabricius (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) is one of the main pests of wood and bamboo borer. Control of these insects is still dependent on the use of insecticides. This study is a preliminary test for the use of ultrasound frequency as a pest control agent. The research aims to study the effect of ultrasonic frequencies on D. minutus mortality. The method used exposure of ultrasonic frequency to imago D. minutus for 7 days and 14 days indoors with temperatures of 28 °C to 29 °C and humidity of 70% to 81%. Significant results for the ultrasonic frequency treatment which resulted in a D. minutus mortality of 80.00% with a duration of 14 days exposure. The results show that ultrasound frequency with the exact durations can be used as a form of D. minutus control.

Abstract

Ants have a very important role in an ecosystem. The insects act as decomposers, pollinators, soil aerators, pest controllers, and predators. Their role is very varied so that they can be easily found in various ecosystems, one of which is the rubber and oil palm ecosystem. The ant’s diversity in this forest eventually will affect the productivity of the land. The aim of this study is to determine the diversity and role of ants in the rubber and oil palm plantations in Sungai Merah Village. Both of the plantations dominate the industrial forest in Jambi. The method used in this study was purposive random sampling. Observation plots were installed in the ecosystem of rubber and oil palm plantations; each ecosystem had 4 plots consisting of 9 units of pitfall traps, and 9 units of bait traps. The results of this study show that 15 species of ants are found in the ecosystem of rubber and oil palm plantations. Furthermore, the collected ants consisted of 39.972 individual ants belonging to 12 genera and 5 subfamilies. Ants establish in the ecosystem of rubber and oil palm plantations in Sungai Merah Village have an important role either as predators (Crematogaster spp., Odontomachus rixosus, Odontoponera tranversa, Pheidole huberi, Tetraponera rufonigra, Tapinoma melanocephalum, Camponotus spp. and Colobopsis moeschi), or foragers such as ants from the genera Anoplolepis, Camponotus, Monomorium and Polyrhachis. As predators, Oecophylla smaragdina, Camponotus spp. and Crematogaster spp. also play a role as biological control agents in the ecosystem.

Abstract

Mauritius raspberry (Rubus rosifolius) is an exotic plant cultivated in Indonesia. Studies showed that the productivity of exotic plants is reducing due to a lack of pollination agent for their origin region. Several methods could be applied to overcome this problem. The study aimed to find the most effective method for pollinating this plant among four pollination regimes: Self-pollination, wild insects, stingless bees (Tetragonula laeviceps), and hand-pollination. The observation was conducted on the insect pollinators' activities (visitation rate, flower constancy, and flower handling time), pollination efficiency, and quality of the fruits produced (fruit volume). The results showed a higher visitation rate (10 to 70 per hour), higher flower constancy (visited from 07.00 to 16.00), and longer flower handling time (13.6 s) of T. laeviceps on raspberry flowers than other insects. High activities related to better raspberry pollination success (96%) and bigger fruits produced. Based on this study, applying stingless bees as pollination agents for exotic plants was the best and potentially applicable to other exotic crops.
