Abstract

This article refers to the lack of literacy regarding the Jegog Jembrana gamelan in terms of musicality. The Jegog Jembrana gamelan has many techniques, one of which is the jurung-jurung technique. The jurung-jurung or transition technique is one of the stylists' interests in creating a new work. Jurung-jurung is one of the Jegog techniques, which means types of transitions in classical Jegog compositions and not all classical Jegog percussion transitions have the Jurung-jurung technique, but they are in accordance with the classical composition of Jegog percussion. The method I use is based on the creation method according to Alma. M Watkins namely exploration, improvisation, and formation. This method is very influential in making this composition because the stages are simple and easy to understand. The relevance of this work will be very useful for the community and artists who want to develop Jegog Jembrana art.

Abstract

Like other art forms, dance and music serve as expressive media for conveying social messages, including nationalism. However, nationalism in musical rhythms is often less explicit than in verbal or visual arts. This article explores the actualization of the spirit of nationhood in dance and karawitan—traditional Balinese musical compositions—by I Wayan Beratha (1926–2014), a maestro who created over 50 works, including dance pieces and instrumental compositions inspired by the national spirit of their time. Using a qualitative approach, this study gathers data through literature reviews, document analysis, and in-depth interviews. Ricoeur’s hermeneutical theory informs the analysis, positioning texts as a foundation for interpreting their social and ideological contexts. Findings reveal that Beratha’s works embody ideological themes, creative expression, and a deep commitment to national unity. His contributions continue to inspire contemporary artists, encouraging them to preserve and expand upon his legacy.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the traditional cultural practices of pasantian reading clubs in facing globality and subjective perceptions of modernity, transformation and change. Pasantian members sing and interpret conventional Balinese texts, thus playing a crucial role in maintaining the artistic and ideological identity of Bali Hindu people. However, engagement in these practices is significantly challenged by rapid sociological changes, which have led to a notable decline in the number of people involved in pasantian. The study focused on understanding how pasantian interact with notions of globality and how these groups can be strengthened to preserve local cultural and ideological values. A qualitative approach employed ethnographic methods such as participant observation and in-depth interviews to explore the practices of pasantian in terms of continuity and change. Findings highlight the importance of practitioners of traditional art forms in negotiating the local-global nexus and suggest strategies for revitalizing pasantian groups.

Abstract

Intangible Cultural Heritage requires various new strategies and methods to address preservation challenges in the modern era. One effective approach is through festivals as a medium for introduction, collaboration, and regeneration of cultural works. This paper examines the 2021 Lake Toba Traditional Music Festival as a model of preservation based on creative participation. This festival involved twelve composers selected through an open selection process by a team of curators to create a musical work sourced from the traditions of four ethnic groups around Lake Toba: Batak Toba, Karo, Simalungun, and Pakpak. Each composer was required to conduct field research and interact directly with local musicians to understand the musical, social, and ecological contexts of the cultures they were adapting. This research uses participatory qualitative methods with data sources in the form of field observations, interviews, audiovisual documentation, and festival archives. The analysis is carried out using a musicological and ethnographic approach to examine the cross-cultural creative process. The results of the research show that this program produces a diversity of musical forms that combine instrumental, vocal, and traditional poetry elements, as well as revealing a dialogue between modernity and tradition. This festival is not only a performance event, but also a space for transcultural creation that strengthens the cultural identity and musical ecology of the Lake Toba region.
