Abstract

Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) is a plant that contains phenolic compounds, such as phenols, flavonoids, and tannins. With this content, lime peel extract has the potential as a sunscreen and has antioxidant activity. Sunscreen compounds refer to ones that can protect the skin from the effect of ultraviolet radiation. At first, the peel was extracted by maceration method using three solvents with different polarity (n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and 70% ethanol). The preliminary test found that the ethyl acetate and ethanol 70% extracts positively contained phenol, tannin, and flavonoid compounds, which were marked by a color change in the sample and continued to test the sunscreen activity. Further, the sunscreen activity test was determined based on the determination of the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value that was done at 290-320 nm (wavelength) with a 5 nm interval.  The results showed that the sunscreen activity of the peel extract is very good at a concentration of 200 ppm for ethyl acetate extract with a value of 28.8; meanwhile, ethanol extracts 70% and ethyl acetate extracts of 400 and 600 ppm concentrations with an average SPF value of 24, 42.5, 42.2 and 81.8, respectively, are included in ultra protection because they have an SPF value of 15.

Abstract

Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam) is one of the plants that has high antioxidant activity, especially in the leaves. Emulgel is one of the topical dosage which dermatologically has several beneficial properties, namely thixotropic, not oily, easy to spread, easy to clean, soft, easy to wash, long lasting, transparent and comfortable when used. The purpose of this research was to formulate moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam) leaves extract into emulgel dosage forms and determine the antioxidant activity of the dosage using DPPH method. The research began with extraction of moringa leaves and optimization of the base by varying the concentration of carbopol 940 as gelling consisting of F1 0.5%, F2 1%, F3 1.5% and F4 2%. The base that met the requirements of good physical stability was F2.  The F2 base was then made into emulgel dosage with 3 concentration variations of the extract, namely F2a 4%, F2b 5% and F2c 6%. The physical stability test result of each formula met the organoleptic test, the pH test, the dispersion test, the adhesion test, the viscosity test, and the freeze-thaw test. The One way ANOVA statistical test result showed that the p value was greater than 0.05, which meant that the emulgel dosage had good physical stability. The IC50values of each antioxidant activity result were F2a (t0 = 120.464 g/mL; t28 = 144.887 g/mL), F2b (t0 = 113.642 g/mL; t28 = 128.407g/mL), F2c (t0 = 74.745 g/mL; t28 = 90.618 g/mL). The statistical results of the t-test showed thep value = 0,027, (0.05), This indicated that there were significant difference results of the antioxidant activity test between the three formulas on the first day (t0) and on the 28th day (t28).

Abstract

Endophytic bacteria are microbes that grow on plant tissue and can form a colony on plant tissue without producing a negative effect on the host. The endophytic bacteria have the potential to have the same activity and produce secondary metabolite as their host. The root of bitter melon (momordica charantia L.) has been known to have antibacterial activity, thus enabling the presence of endophytic bacteria, which also have antibacterial potential. This present research aims to isolate and characterize endophytic bacteria found in bitter melon (Momordica charantia L. The method used in the isolation stage is direct lanting so that the endophytic bacteria are obtained from plant tissue; macroscopic and microscopic characterization stage; inhibition test stage; inhibition test stage using disc method (Kirby-Bauer). In accordance with the results of macroscopic and microscopic characterization, the two bacteria indicate different characteristics.

Abstract

The disposal of disposable masks has raised concerns among environmentalists. Disposable medical mask waste is currently easy to find because people throw it away everywhere in intact condition. When people throw away masks carelessly, it is difficult to distinguish the use of shows by people with excellent or diseased health conditions. The problem in this research is the improper management of medical masks. This research method aims to analyze the frequency of using masks when leaving the house and the practice of processing medical mask waste used by the people of Gorontalo City. This type of research is quantitative with a cross-sectional design and analytic descriptive method. The population in this study were all people living in the City of Gorontalo in 2 sub-districts, namely Kota Timur and Kota Utara, with a sample size of 379 samples from the City of East and 377 representatives from the City of North. The results showed that the processing of medical masks in Gorontalo City during the Covid-19 Pandemic was not on target; this was evidenced by the processing of medical mask waste in Kota Timur District, which was disposed of carelessly as much as 36.5%, while medical mask waste was processed by cutting and 16.7% were burnt for the East Kota sub-district and 15.9% processed and reused. This study concluded that in the processing of medical masks in Gorontalo City during the Covid-19 pandemic for the East City District, many were still disposed of carelessly. In contrast, most medical mask users were washed and reused for the North City District. In comparison, for the North sub-district, it was 4.2%; even out of the 377 respondents surveyed, 361 medical mask users washed and reused. This is very worrying for environmental experts because the repeated use of medical masks will particularly impact oral health. Keywords: Processing; Waste; Medical mask.
