Abstract

The Islamic boarding school culture at Al-Mubtadi-ien Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School has proven effective in maintaining and shaping the moral values of the community through consistently implemented traditional practices. The results of qualitative research indicate that the implementation of congregational prayer, sorogan, talaman, and ta‘ziran contributes significantly to the formation of discipline, social solidarity, and moral character among students. These practices represent the integration of spiritual, intellectual, and social education in response to the phenomenon of moral degradation in modern society. The point-based ta‘ziran system has empirically been shown to reduce the level of violations and increase students’ sense of responsibility. The findings of this study complement studies in Islamic education by presenting an empirical analysis of the ability of Islamic boarding schools to adapt to the challenges of globalization. Furthermore, this Islamic boarding school education model enriches the philosophical perspective of character education based on virtue ethics and Islamic values. Therefore, Islamic boarding school administrators are advised to strengthen the integration between tradition and modernity to maintain the relevance of Islamic boarding school institutions in the future. The results of this study also have the potential to serve as a reference in the formulation of national education policies oriented toward the preservation of cultural values.

Abstract

This study examines the scope of Islamic philosophy of science—ontology (the essence of science as God's creation encompasses four realms of reality centered on monotheism), epistemology (the sources of revelation—the Qur'an/Sunnah supplemented by reason/the senses/bayani-burhani-'irfani methods, including Al-Ghazali's Nine-Stage System), and axiology (ethics of revelation for caliphate and eternal happiness)—in the context of contemporary Islamic education. Historically, the evolution began with the synthesis of Al-Kindi/Farabi/Sina (early classical), the critique-synthesis of Al-Ghazali/Khaldun (middle), to the ijtihad of Abduh, the Islamization of al-Attas, the perennialism of Nasr (contemporary), and the Islamist deconstruction of Ramadan in the digital age (modern). Using descriptive library research methods with content analysis of national/international journals, this comparative study identifies a paradigm shift: from normative texts to rational-critical-integrative ones, supporting blended learning, AI ethics, and a holistic curriculum that prevents secularization for the sake of intellectually and morally competitive insan kamil. The findings affirm the philosophy of science as a bridge between revelation and empirical reason, relevant to globalization/technology, with implications for the formation of an adaptive Islamic civilization based on tawhid.

Abstract

Epistemic scientific education has been widely discussed in various studies; however, research that specifically examines students’ epistemic scientific education practices in the context of outstanding Madrasah Aliyah remains limited. This study aimed to explore and describe how epistemic scientific education is developed and practiced by students in the process of scientific writing at Madrasah Aliyah Unggulan K.H. Abd. Wahab Hasbulloh (MAUWH). A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, involving students and scientific writing supervisors selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis of students’ scientific papers, then analyzed qualitatively to identify patterns of learning and habituation of scientific practices. The findings show that students’ epistemic scientific abilities are formed through individually conducted learning and scientific writing processes, in which students are trained to formulate problems, trace scientific sources, and construct arguments systematically. These results contribute to the development of epistemic scientific education theory and broaden understanding of the practical implementation of epistemic scientific learning in the madrasah context. The study concludes that learning and habituation of scientific practices play a crucial role in shaping students’ epistemic abilities and recommends the strengthening of research-based learning in Madrasah Aliyah. The implications enrich the literature on epistemic scientific education and provide practical guidance for Islamic educational institutions in developing scientifically oriented learning, while also opening opportunities for further studies on more comprehensive mapping of students’ levels of epistemic scientific ability.
