Abstract

The lack nurses participation in research remains a global challenge. The existence of barriers within individual nurses and systems in the workplace can hinder nurses' participation in conducting research. So far there has been no research regarding barriers to nurse involvement in research at the Sint Elisabeth hospital in Semarang. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate barriers to nurse participation in research at Sint Elisabeth hospital Semarang. Method: A descriptive study was conducted involving 384 nurses at Elisabeth hospital Semarang and were selected by convenience sampling. Data was collected using a questionnaire on barriers to nurses' participation in research. Descriptive analysis was carried out in this study. Results: The mean barriers for research participation related to resources and perceived personal relevance of nurses were 3.31 and 2.51 (possible range 1-5), respectively. The highest barrier related to resources is the lack of incentive support or rewards for nurses who conduct research and the lack of financial or other resources to facilitate research activities. The highest barrier regarding perceived personal relevance is the absence of a topic or research idea. Conclusions: Barriers in nurses participation in research related to resources in the hospital were more felt by nurses than barrier related personal relevance.

Abstract

Background: Nurses play a crucial role in the prevention and management of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs); therefore, they should possess adequate knowledge, skills, and a willingness to do so. However, limited evidence exists on Indonesian nurses’ willingness, knowledge, and skills in the prevention and management of DFU. The study aimed to evaluate willingness, knowledge, and skills in the prevention and management of DFU among Indonesian nurses and to identify factors associated with these. Methods: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted. A total of 549 nurses working in medical-surgical inpatient units at four hospitals in Central Java, Indonesia, were selected using convenience sampling, given ease of online access and willingness to participate. Data on willingness, knowledge, and skill in the prevention and management of DFU were collected using an online survey. The Chi-square and logistic regression tests were used for data analysis. This study was reported in accordance with the STROBE guidelines. Results: The majority of nurses had no DFU training (65,2%), but had a bachelor's education level (51.9%) and were involved in DFU patient care (92.7%). Approximately 45.9% of nurses have adequate willingness, while 33.2% and 32.2% have adequate knowledge and skill, respectively. Higher education was associated with an adequate willingness (aOR 1.91, 95%CI:1.26-2.90, p=0.002), knowledge (aOR 1.55, 95%CI:1.07-2.26, p=0.020), and skills (aOR 1.72, 95%CI:1.18-2.51, p=0.005), among nurses. The DFU training was associated with adequate knowledge (aOR 2.71, 95%CI:1.86-3.95, p<0.001), and skills (aOR 2.63, 95%CI:1.81-3.85, p<0.001) of nurses. The DFU caring experience was also associated with nurses' knowledge (aOR 3.61, 95%CI:1.06-12.62, p=0.039) and skills (aOR 3.41, 95%CI:1.01-11.57, p=0.049). Furthermore, adequate knowledge (aOR 1.35, 95%CI:1.47-7.65, p=0.004) and adequate skills (aOR 5.60, 95%CI:2.41-13.01, p<0.001) were associated with willingness. Conclusion: Under half of nurses in hospital settings had adequate willingness, knowledge, and skill in the prevention and management of DFU. Higher education level, practical training, and caring experience were associated with the nurses’ willingness, knowledge, and skills. Adequate willingness was also associated with adequate knowledge and skill.

Abstract

In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), both innate and acquired immunity are weakened by hyperglycemia. Lycopene is one of the hydrocarbon carotenoids that has been widely studied for its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, furthermore act as hypoglycemic and immunomodulator. Herein, we investigated the effect of lycopene and metformin combination on fasting blood glucose (FBG) and neutrophil counts. The rats were divided randomly into six groups, each containing five rats. Group 1 consisted of normal rats (N) and group 2, T2DM (DM) rats, which were administered 0.5 mL of coconut oil; group 3 T2DM rats were administered 250 mg/kg of metformin in 0.5 mL of coconut oil; groups  4,5 and 6 rats were administered a combination of metformin 250 mg/kg with 10 mg/kg (DML-10), 20 mg/kg (DML-20) and 40 mg/kg (DML-40) of lycopene in 0.5 mL of coconut oil, respectively. Treatment was administered every day for 28 days. A model of T2DM rats was induced by a high-fat diet for two weeks combined with streptozotocin–nicotinamide. Data were analyzed with a one-way ANOVA test followed by the least significant difference (LSD) test. There were significant differences in FBG levels and the number of neutrophils in all groups. Lycopene combined with metformin had lower FBG concentrations and higher neutrophil counts compared to metformin monotherapy (p<0.001), and these observations were dose-dependent. Lycopene combined with metformin can improve blood glucose and neutrophil counts in rats with diabetes. The highest effect was observed in combination with lycopene at a dose of 40 mg/kg and metformin at a dose of 250 mg/kg.

Abstract

A child can be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) before they are two years old. Children with ASD will show symptoms of social interaction and communication disorders, repetitive behaviours, and an extremely narrow range of activities of interest.  Early ASD treatment will result in significant improvement in ASD symptoms. The assessment treatment evaluation checklist (ATEC) instrument is a commonly used instrument to evaluate the severity of ASD after being given therapy. This study aims to evaluate the severity of ASD in children aged 2-6 years using the ATEC instrument. This study used a cross-sectional design. A total of 66 ASD children aged 2-6 years from the autism clinic selected by simple random sampling were involved in the study. ASD severity was measured with the ATEC instrument by therapists from the autism clinic. Data on respondent characteristics such as gender and age diagnosed with ASD were evaluated. One-way ANOVA test was used in this study. The overall ASD severity at age 2,3,4,5,6 years was 96.45, 99.50, 94.23, 94.83, 100.87 respectively (possible score range is 0-179). There was no difference in the severity of ASD in each age group of children 2-6 years (p=0.878). There is no difference in the severity of ASD in children aged 2-6 years. ASD children need appropriate action to improve the severity of ASD from an early age on an ongoing basis
