Abstract

This study explores the cultural and traditional Islamic political da’wah represented by KH. Asnawi, a conventional scholar who integrated da’wah, education, and socio-political activism within the context of Dutch colonialism. The research addresses the need to reinterpret da’wah not only as a religious activity but as a form of political communication that nurtures social awareness and cultural resistance. The study focuses on how KH. Asnawi integrated da’wah, education, and organizational activism to strengthen Islamic identity and mobilize collective resistance. Using a qualitative method that combines historical and documentary approaches, the analysis draws on texts such as Fasholatan, archival sources, and organizational records. The findings show that KH. Asnawi employed cultural and persuasive communication strategies through poetry, madrasah education, and Islamic organizations (Sarekat Islam and Nahdlatul Ulama). His da’wah functioned at cognitive, affective, and behavioral levels, transforming individual piety into social solidarity. Viewed through Social Penetration Theory and Persuasive Communication Theory, his strategy demonstrates how religious communication can evolve from emotional engagement to political mobilization. The study contributes to the scholarship of Islamic communication by revealing da’wah as a contextual and transformative process that bridges spirituality, culture, and social change.

Abstract

Abstract. This article examines the process of gender norm reconstruction in Saudi Arabia within the framework of Vision 2030, focusing on the state's strategy of selectively liberalizing culture to support its authoritarian modernization project. In the conservative Wahhabi tradition, women's positions have been limited by legal, social, and religious structures. However, since 2016, under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi government has initiated a series of reforms that have allowed women to drive, work in the public sector, and access entertainment and cultural spaces. This article uses a qualitative-analytical approach with an exploratory-descriptive design through discourse and policy analysis, as well as a theoretical framework of modernization, state feminism, and ideological control in authoritarian states. It was found that gender reforms in Vision 2030 are not merely a form of emancipation, but rather a state strategy to build new legitimacy, attract global investment, and reframe national identity without overhauling the authoritarian political order. This study makes an important contribution to understanding the dynamics of gender in contemporary Muslim societies and development politics in the Gulf region.

Abstract

This study analyzes the NU Online ecological da'wah communication pattern as a representation of Nahdlatul Ulama's digital da'wah strategy in responding to environmental issues in the 2021–2024 period. Using a netnography approach and critical discourse analysis, this study examined 30 articles that were purposively selected based on  the highest level of engagement.  The results of the study show that NU Online's ecological da'wah builds digital authority through the conversion of NU's symbolic capital such as the legitimacy of ulama, Islamic boarding school networks, and fiqh traditions into a communication format that is in line with the logic of digital mediatization. The analysis of maqāṣid shows that there is a variation in the epistemological quality of content, ranging from those that are in harmony with the principle of benefit to those that tend to be reductionist. This research emphasizes that NU Online plays a significant role in shaping public ecological awareness, but requires strengthening methodological standards so that digital da'wah has more integrity and sustainability.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the dynamics of power relations between the state, clerics, and society in the production of religious authority in Indonesia. Conceptually, this research uses the Theory of Religious Authority: Weber and Foucault, and power relations between the state, clerics, and society in the sociology of religion. Through a literature review approach, in the last two decades, social changes due to globalization, digitalization, and political transformation have created a new landscape in Islamic religious authority. By examining various academic literatures, this paper identifies three main formations of ulama authority: state, conservative-independent and progressive. State ulama authority is often institutionalized through official institutions and supports moderate Islamic projects as part of domestic policy strategies. Meanwhile, conservative and revivalist ulama emphasize the importance of purification of teachings and resistance to secular values. On the other hand, progressive ulama advocate for the reinterpretation of Islamic teachings within the framework of social justice and human rights.
