Abstract

In an increasingly connected global world, film plays a crucial role in representing the complexities of Chinese diasporic identity and its accompanying emotional legacies. This study compares Lulu Wang's The Farewell (2019), representing the Chinese American community, with Pat Boonnitipat's How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (2024), focusing on the Sino-Thai community. Both films highlight the tension between tradition and modernity, as well as between family values and economic pressures within contemporary capitalism. Drawing on Benedict Anderson's concept of the Imagined Community, this study analyzes how narrative structure, language use, and representations of death function as symbolic devices in constructing an imagined diasporic togetherness. The results show that The Farewell (2019) emphasizes identity fragmentation marked by linguistic alienation and emotional distance, while How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (2024) depicts a more connected form of family relations, albeit still influenced by the consumption and economic aspirations. Ultimately, both films represent the Chinese diaspora not only as an ethnic or geographical entity but as a construct of affective experiences born from collective practices of grief, care, and memory. Viewing cinema as an emotional and cultural archive, this study asserts that film demonstrates how diasporic communities continue to shape, negotiate, and reimagine their identities, losses, and legacies in an increasingly transnational world.

Abstract

Abstract. This study examines how the Sundanese philosophical principle Jati Kasilih ku Janti is manifested and communicated through the Seren Tahun ceremony at Kampung Budaya Lembur Anyar, Bogor Regency. The research aims to: (1) describe the communicative architecture of the ceremony using the SPEAKING framework; (2) analyze how the philosophy is encoded in ritual speech genres and semiotic object systems; and (3) construct a Ritual Communication Model grounded in the ceremony findings. A qualitative design integrating ethnography of communication and semiotic analysis was employed, with data from observational fieldwork across three consecutive ceremony cycles (2022–2024), in-depth interviews with 19 informants, and semiotic analysis of 28 ritual symbols. Six ritual speech genres and four categories of symbolic objects were identified as primary philosophical encoding mechanisms. The proposed Ritual Communication Model (RCM-JKJ) integrates textual, symbolic, performative, and witness communication layers within a condensation-iteration-differentiated reception dynamic. This model contributes a locally grounded theoretical framework to ritual communication scholarship and advances the de-Westernization of organizational communication theory in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigates how the Sundanese philosophical principle Jati Kasilih ku Janti is transmitted across generational boundaries through cultural communication in the urban kampung community of Kampung Labirin, Bogor City. The research examines (1) the specific cultural communication channels through which the principle is transmitted across three generational cohorts; (2) intergenerational communication gaps and the adaptive strategies employed to bridge them; and (3) a theoretical model of intergenerational cultural value transmission grounded in the empirical findings. A qualitative approach employing ethnography of communication was used, with data from nine months of participatory observation, in-depth interviews with 22 informants across three generational cohorts (Generation I: 1940–1964; Generation II: 1965–1989; Generation III: 1990–2006), and two focus group discussions. Three dominant transmission channels were identified: oral storytelling (ngawangkong), ritual enactment (upacara adat), and embodied cultural practice (pembiasaan budaya). Significant intergenerational communication gaps were documented alongside effective adaptive bridging strategies including media hybridization and facilitated dialogue. The Five-Stage Intergenerational Value Transmission Model (IVTM-5) is proposed, comprising Encoding, Channeling, Decoding, Negotiation, and Re-encoding stages. This model contributes to Indonesian-specific cultural communication theory and provides practical guidance for urban cultural preservation programs.
